  • I love chili and like you it's a little too warm for the *GOOD* chili fixins So I make a white chili - although i will have to find substitutes for the beans now that I don't eat them. That's what makes the thick in the water I think.

    You should take some time out of *your* life to have YOU time I'm a big believer in that it reduces your stress and opens your mind then when you come back to "life" you can be mom or grandma or the woman caregiver a little easier.

    I hope my success will be like yours one day - I was sure I was on the road to ordering my clothes from Omar the tent maker! lol

      I saved a couple of pieces of clothing from just before I started losing weight. When I am finished, I am going to take a picture of me in them. When I put the pants, which do not have an elastic waist, on I can stuff both arms into them and still have room to spare. It's scary to think that they fit me like a glove and made me feel skinny! You'll get there, CM, the key is to just keep plugging away at it. And to understand that times when you don't lose weight are important victories too, because the really important thing is not to put it back on! As long as you're not putting it back on, you are winning.

      I normally don't have too much trouble with the "me" time. Even now, hubby spends a good chunk of the day working at the computer, so I'm free to do what I want more or less. But it was actually getting out and about on my own I was missing. My limited energy has been taken up with family. I had to bow out of a chance to see my little guys to have that outing, but I figured I needed it. As well as the clothes... LOL!

      Today's lunch was fish breaded with pork rinds (not bad, but my methodology needs tweaking), a tomato-parsley salad inspired by tabouli, and an attempt to make those squash fries using butternut squash. All in all, a good meal.

      There was maple syrup in this morning's sausages, but I picked the brand of breakfast sausages with the fewest weird ingredients. I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for breakfast sausages without sugar. Honestly, I don't like my sausages sweet anyway. But Hubby was getting tired of bacon. (Yes Ecks, you read that right. He wanted a change of pace.)

      I put leftover cooked spinach in my eggs this morning. They were okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make them like that. But we are all out of peppers and the other veggies required prep. I don't like cooking in the morning, which is why I ate raw oatmeal for years. It was actually very good, no need to make that face.

      Supplements. I tried a spoonful of D-ribose last night on a mostly empty stomach. That was a mistake. I got an allergic reaction (which didn't last long) and was on a buzz at bedtime. I took it this morning after food and it made a huge difference. D-ribose is extracted from corn, which I think explains the reaction. But I've noticed lately that my body tends to react to large quantities of inhabitual foods with an allergic reaction (hives on the inside of my wrists, in case you care). The same thing happened when I had too much ginger at one point, and also to coconut products in my early primal days when I had several meals in a row that involved generous amounts of coconut oil/milk/flour/whatever. So now I try to be moderate in these things, and it seems to be alright.

        • Not yet, but that sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, the males under my roof have voracious appetites, and love finding things already cooked in the fridge... LOL! Not much going bad around here these days, but I almost always have to cook from scratch. Maybe some preparation the night before, like mixing the dry ingredients for pancakes, might help.

              I used to like my oatmeal with an egg and salt and pepper in it. See - I saw that!

              My grandmother for years would make me eat plain oatmeal, no nothing in it. So I guess I grew up with it. but mine was cooked - you ate it raw? like right out of the canister? I guess it's not worse than granola bars

              I cannot believe there is man alive that could get tired of bacon. unblievable. lol

              • Primal pancakes, Sabine, you can stop hyperventilating. Coconut-macadamia, or banana-almond, or some such concoction. They're decent, although I still haven't found a recipe that I consider wonderful. And macadamias are pricey, but for a change they're okay.

                Greek yogurt with add-ons is my standard easy breakfast now, but I'd like to move away from dairy, at least as an experiment. I'm finding that harder to deal with psychologically than dumping grains though. So I'm going to try my time-tested method of edging it out of my diet with better things, rather than trying to deprive myself. That has worked well for me in many areas of my life, sometimes unintentionally. You get rid of something not by giving it up, but by leaving no room for it. But I am still looking for something that is easy, delicious, and perfectly primal, or maybe I should say paleo. The Greek yogurt (plus berries, nuts, flaxseed, and hempseed) is primal.

                On an entirely different note, Siobhan is right. Primal eliminates BO. We were up around 45 degrees C yesterday, when you took the humidity into account (that's well over 100F, but I don't feel like figuring it out precisely). My Tshirt still smelled freshly washed at the end of the day. We don't have air conditioning. Fans, yes, but it was still awfully hot in here. Today I remembered that I had bought a pair of polymer-crystal bandanas last year and dug them out. They're a great help.

                  Was just thinking yesterday about doing this for a quick (pop in the toaster oven) breakfast. Maybe in a bacon cup. Something like... Bacon & Egg Cups, but of course quichey and without bread.

                  Just bought and tried pork rinds today for the first time in probably 20+ years (wow I'm feeling old with that statement). They were okay. Started tasting better the more I ate. ha. Hadn't thought to use them as breading. What method do you use?

                  • Ecks is the expert on this. I tried it for the first time today. Just crushed the pork rinds, added seasonings. I coated the fillets in olive oil mixed with a bit of lemon juice, then put in the crumbs. If I were doing it over again, I would thaw the fish first, and possibly cook on a rack to get them out of their juices. It might be better to use beaten egg instead of the olive oil too. But they were quite edible, just not fantastic. Pork rinds are only so-so as a snack, IMO. Home-made ones would probably be better.

                    • I love me some pork rinds, but I'm southern lol. I love the chicharrons with the fat attahced to them DH doesn't like these but for me they are a legal "potato chip" when I'm out and about and need something to curb my hunger -
                      Also use as breading in a meat loaf.....grind up in the food processor and mix with ground beef and what ever other seasonings you use and it takes the place of the traditional bread crumbs.

                      • Another good 'breading' is dehydrated onion, ground into dust/crumbs in your food processor. I used to use this all the time in my Atkins days. Need to try it again, I remember it tasting FANTASTIC! Maybe mixed with a little coconut flour, as well.

                          CM, even when the scale is not moving, things are happening - inches are being lost.

                          Judg, I'm getting tired of sausage, but I found one that has so little sugar in it that it doesn't even register on the nutrition info: Jones All Natural Fully Cooked Mild

                          What is D-ribose and why is it so important that we would take an extractive of corn?

                          My favorite Primal pancakes are made with eggs and cream cheese.

                          2 eggs
                          2 oz cream cheese
                          1 tbsp coconut flour
                          1 tsp vanilla

                          Blend, let settle, pour onto hot griddle, flip and serve with cream cheese, strawberries and whipped cream. So freaking yummy. And low cal too if you're interested. The whole get up is one serving!!

                          And Siobhan IS right... I only wear deodorant when it's super super hot out b/c I don't like that sticky feeling. Otherwise, absolutely no BO here for weeks!!

                          • Fruit aside, I haven't permitted any sweets in the 3 weeks I've been primal. Thought about a dark chocolate bar, but really got intrigued when you mentioned mixing coconut oil, cocoa & stevia the other day. Especially because I thought.... ohhhh it can be soft, like frosting or fudge, depending on temperature. So I kept meaning to make this magical "Judg Fudg" and yesterday I finally gave it a shot...

                            I used 2 tbsp oil, 2 tsp cocoa, scoop of stevia, and tossed in some pecans and shredded coconut. Pretty sure my proportions are all wrong (I've since looked up a few recipes using just these three ingredients) and the stevia taste was way too strong for me, but ironically two of my roommates loved it and it was gone rather promptly.

                            Will experiment some more. Found this orange version which I might give a go.

                            • Jenn26point2, the pancakes sound delicious and I am trying them for tomorrow's breakfast.

                              DashFire, I couldn't open your attachment but will try mixing those ingredients (except will use liquid stevia as that's what I have on hand.) The orange chocolate sounds YUM!

                                Chicharrons? The bagged pork rinds are just OK, as far as I'm concerned, but I remember having home-made ones on occasion way back when, and I loved them.

                                Judg fudg! Love it! Sounds like you're being more successful than I am. I never thought of adding nut pieces or coconut. Looks like more experimenting is on the books. Ironically though, I'm kind of sick of sweets right now, even the stevia version. Had veggie cravings today, LOL!

                                Sounds like my kind of sausage. Had some Abruzzese dry sausage at my in-laws' the other day. It was great, and so much less junk in it than most North American sausages.

                                D-ribose is a sugar that our body manufactures that is absolutely essential for our metabolism to run smoothly. People with chronic fatigue are low in it, generally speaking. It does seem strange to be taking a sugar, especially since the doctor advocating it is so strictly paleo, but if I remember right, it goes straight to the cells. Anyway, it's an essential ingredient in the biochemical process that provides energy to our cells. I don't think there's any reason why people in general would need to take it, although athletes apparently do before exercise.

                                I've been pretty wiped the last couple of days, partly due to an energy hangover and mostly due to poor sleep. We had a few really hot, muggy days that were hard on me. But basically, I have to get out of the bad habit of pushing myself a little too hard. I do have to admit, after reading Dr. Myhill's material, now that I know what is actually going on in my body when I push myself, it's going to be much easier to persuade myself to back off. Knowledge is power. Finding out what carbs and sugars were doing to me (I'm afraid I just thought of them as excess calories before) had a similar effect: now I look at them and see trouble hiding behind the deliciousness. No thanks!

                                For those interested in my CFS saga, I've added these supplements to the list: D-ribose, niacinamide, L-carnitine, B12 (sublingual methylcobalamin), CoQ10, and magnesium citrate. Whew! I'm getting a ridiculous number of supplement bottles in the cupboard. Looking forward to the day when I can back off a few of them. Anyway, these latest additions are to "feed" the mitochondria, basically putting the necessary chemicals back in my cellular batteries.
