  • Years ago, when our gas line went out and we were saving up to get a new one put in, we went five months by going to the gym nearby for swims and warm showers four times a week. I think that's why Eldest wound up on the swim team.

    • The latest weather report is lots of rain and winds up to 40 mph, which is not too terrible. We aren't getting a direct hit here in mid-coast Maine; it will be west of here. Pray for me to get home tomorrow morning! I have to work tonight. Since this is Maine, that means crossing many bodies of water, small and large. And possibly flooded roads, which are no fun whatsoever.

No hairball this morning, but BW Cat ate. He is quite the little puzzle these last few days. Normally he is my healthy cat and Slim Cat is the more delicate one.

Debating about going to the store, but I have enough food. It would be silly to buy more and have it go bad.

Speaking of food, I realized this morning that I had a ripe avocado so I made it into guacamole of a sort. Cilantro, scallions, sriracha, salt, lime juice. Pretty tasty! Had some of that with the pork from yesterday. A winner!

No swimming this morning. I have an odd little infected place on my left eyelid and I had to concede that putting in my contacts and jumping in a public pool, however well maintained, is a bad idea. Luckily it doesn't show, but it is a bit sore.

        • For some reason I got a lot of motivation here on the last day of my holiday and tackled the boxes. I am happy to report that I emptied four of them! I have five large empty containers and most important, the end is in sight. I now feel that I can accomplish my goal. That is, I will be able to fit all of my belongings into the existing closets and storage areas and soon everything will have a place and actually be in that place. This will be something that has not occurred in 8 or 9 years! I unearthed the Christmas decoration I will use this year - just a few things, some lights and a couple of decorative things.

Hey, the wind just REALLY picked up.

          • If its too bad in the morning, stay at the hospital. You might want to put extra kibble out for the cats in case. I don't know how your hospital works, but we frequently were held over in bad weather, especially if the oncoming shift couldn't get in.

              • Yes, I am taking a few things with me just in case. The irony is that I live quite some distance away from work relative to my co-workers. Three of them live within walking distance. Wouldn't it be nice if I could trade shifts with them? But that just isn't done at my hospital. Luckily I only have to be relieved by one person, and three are due in the morning so normally at least one can make it. But getting home after a storm is always problematic. One large tree down on the road and I am rather stuck.

The wind is really, really howling now. I just heard on the radio there will be gusts up to 60 mph, which is yikes. The power keeps coming and going. I have left open all the closets for the kitties to retreat to if it gets too scary for them.

                There goes the power!

                      • Left the house in a bit of chaos. When the power went out, the old security system (not used now) started beeping. Landlord wanted to leave it because I was going to work, but I insisted on fixing it because 1) it would be horrible for the cats (he didn't quite understand why this was a problem) and 2) I really, really don't want to come home in the morning and have to deal with beeping. But he hooked up the battery and it stopped. Those things are such a pain!

A window in the big house (his) was broken, hit by a flying branch. The storm had only been blowing for 45 minutes and already a broken window! I hope none of mine break! It don't think they will though.

                          • Okay, I don't want to come off as complaining too much because a lot of people are really worse off and got hit hard. But it hasn't been fun. I'll pick up where I left off, going to work after having the power go off, the alarm system go off, and the window break. Got to work to find the hospital leaking like a sieve. Partial ceiling collapse. No one hurt.

Roads okay until I got to my own street. Closed. Blocked off. I got out of the car, moved the barrier, and drove the last 100 yards. A telephone pole is snapped in half, but still standing with lines hanging everywhere. Very dangerous! Got home and the alarm was going off! Cats were freaked. A huge tree was down in the yard, right next to my house! It fell on a trailer that is stored against the side. Must have missed the house by literally inches! So lucky.

Couldn't get the alarm to go off. Couldn't raise the landlord. Started to get a little hysterical. Wrote note to landlord, and when I went to put it on the door, he finally woke up. We got alarm turned off. Generator wasn't on, so no power. Ate some cold pork and went to sleep. Got woken repeatedly by 1) generator coming on 2) alarm going off 3) pounding rain. After three hours of broken sleep got up. Went to store and got a few things. Thought I heard a noise on the way home. A little later, when I went out to drive to my friend's house to go to the symphony, my car was definitely crooked. The right rear is much lower than it should be. Possibly a strut or a shock. Big crisis! Landlord cautioned against driving car, as it is unsafe and could be further damaged. He drove me to my friend's house. Went to dinner and symphony, had a great time despite the worry. Had to impose on them further to drive me to work. They very kindly did this despite the lateness of the hour. Work was crazy but calmed down a bit. Landlord is kindly going to pick me up, can you believe that? Running on adrenaline, but really tired.

I have to make some decision about the car, the sooner the better, but I am going to need to get some sleep. It will be a lot easier to get it towed if the road is open! Otherwise it is a long way around. And it would be nice to have some power so I can have more food if I am carless. The generator can't run all of the time.

I am going to get a rental car, I think. I have to stop worrying about this now while I can't do anything. Save my energy for later. It will all be okay in the end.
