  • Oh, wow. You need to post this experience on one of the discussion threads. It might really help someone. That's amazing. And frustrating at the same time.

    • Yes, I know PF is a pretty common and really frustrating problem. With some people, it does indeed just go away on its on. But with some people...

It is also possible that the immune response provided by my viral infection helped kickstart my body into fighting the PF. Since n=1 here, I can't make crazy claims, but for someone going through what I did, a few days of rest is a relatively easy thing to try. And cheap. And harmless.

Well, I learned a valuable lesson today. I am NOT ready for IF. I inadvertently fasted for 17 hours and it didn't go well. I just wasn't hungry last night and didn't eat, planning to do so around 5 AM or so (I was at work) but then got very busy and didn't get a chance. By the time I got home I was way too tired and went right to sleep. Woke up in the afternoon headachy, tired, sore, shaky. I have a lot to learn about the primal lifestyle and I just notched up an object lesson. I should have eaten something regardless of fatigue, or eaten after about 8 hours. But! Oh blessed sweet potato! The beautiful tuber came to my rescue. A sweet potato with a good knob of butter and some chicken fixed me up nicely. I must remember to keep one or two around the house all of the time.

      • Oy. Obviously too long a stretch for you at this time. And it's also not a good idea to be doing it when you are active.

I would fast two days a week as a young single for religious reasons (an entirely voluntary thing) and I can tell you from experience that you do get used to it rather quickly, even without eating primal. I fasted two entire days, not consecutive, a week, so two fasts of about 36 hours a week. After a while I wouldn't even get hungry on those days. We have weekly biorhythms as well as daily ones, and it just got programmed in. Please bear in mind that I was a student, and not very physically active. I would not recommend it for someone who has to move around to any degree.

Also a fast will essentially detox you, and rather quickly, so it's not at all uncommon for the first experience to be very unpleasant, as you have discovered. If you're going to try doing more than skipping breakfast, it's better to wait for a day when you can take it easy and be quiet.

Drat! I forgot to buy the sweet potatoes...

        • I just saw Fathead - wow. All I can say is wow. Everyone needs to see that movie and then eat some eggs and steak. Go coconuts!

          • I've just discovered cooking eggs in the microwave. What a great thing for work! I poached one, then added some butter -delicious! I am glad I really like eggs, one more thing that makes it easy to stay primal.

Also enjoying tea with milk and one teaspoon of honey.

            • Found Paleotrack to use for food journal - pretty cool. I put honey in my tea and ate a banana - when I dialed it all in, I was horrified at the carb/fat/protein ratio! Ate another egg with butter to help even things up. But I don't want to get too hung up on numbers at this point. I like the pie chart - really illustrates how easy it is to underestimate how much a bit of honey and a starchy fruit like a banana can add up.

Walked barefoot for half an hour - hope I didn't overdo it. Feet feel good right now.

Well, better get to work, got some stuff to finish up before I go home. Today I did not make the mistake of not eating. I will be sure and note how I feel when I wake up this afternoon (like I will be able to avoid it).

              • I've just started to think about IFing as I have only been primal for almost 4 months. Today I had to drive my daughter to school and have now decided that I'm not hungry, so have missed breakfast and will wait till lunch. I can't do this on a work day otherwise it makes me too crabby with the children - not good. The weather here is foul. Driving rain, very squally and unpredictable. Horrid. Usual crazy April in England and (hard to believe) we currently are in 'official' drought and have had hosepipe bans from the 4th April!! Since then it has done nothing, nothing but rain all day and everyday. So I fired up the PC for some planning (school work for next week) probably interspersed with bursts of hectic cleaning! Sort of multi-tasking but more like balanced serial activities?
Your day sounds much calmer.... x (Hahaha)

                • I thank Fathead for getting me onto primal. It is an eye-opening movie, and really gets you thinking. He has two other dvds: 'Big Fat Fiasco' and 'Science for Smart People'. Well worth watching. And his blog posts are great reads. (Why yes, I AM a Tom McNaughton fan. Why do you ask?) Yesterday I was wearing the t-shirt I got from his website, even: Wheat is Murder, with a graphic of the Grim Reaper holding a stalk of wheat. Yay, Fathead!

Scrambled eggs work very well in the microwave too. You can cook some veggies in the bowl with some butter before adding the eggs if you want, also works very well.

I suppose Fathead is available online?

Hulu is blocked in Canada too. I tried, just in case there had been a change since last time I checked Hulu out, but no.

                            • I saw it on Netfl*x - I have the streaming only. I can't wait to see his other films.

Late yesterday afternoon, I had literally just gotten out of bed (remember I work nights) and houseguests showed up! They called, we were chatting, and then they announced they were in my driveway! Whoo! Would you believe I have them eating primal? Last night lamb, mushrooms, salad, sweet potatoes; this morning scrambled eggs, bacon, heavy cream in their coffee. They told me an enlightening story of their vegan-for-20-years boss who cycles 20 miles to work every day who just had a quadruple bypass at age 62. (Guess that's working for him, huh! Snark snark) Well, back to the guests, more later -

                              • LOL! I had a dinner guest last night, and she got primal too. And enjoyed it... I did not trust myself to make a side of rice and not eat it along with her.
