  • That would be like a dream to get some of my coworkers on board with primal. I have the zeal of the convert, you know! It kills me to think I work in a hospital yet we are neglecting the most basic of all health factors, both on a personal and professional basis. And I have many coworkers who are considerably overweight. Now that I have taken off some pounds, even the thinner ones are starting to look beefier to me. They are really nice, caring people and they don't deserve SAD.

Woke up feeling very good. Going out with a friend tonight to a concert at the local playhouse. We are lucky to still have a summer stock theater here. Should be fun.

Had a large smoothie - woke up quite hungry. Got a little whisper in my head - not a headache but a foggy type of feeling. Wonder if it is the goat milk? I'm going to transition to coconut milk in my smoothies and see if that goes away. I seem to get a little brain fog thing when I have too much cow milk, goat milk may also be a culprit.

Update on the cat conversion. I give it a C-. They are steadfast in their refusal to eat the most healthy foods I have been feeding them, and I couldn't take their pleading hungry faces anymore, so I fed them the healthier Fancy Feast varieties. I am amazed at the difference in composition between the ones labeled, somewhat innocuously, "grilled" and the classic or pate versions. The grilled versions are seemingly mostly carbs! I'm also cautiously optimistic about a brand called Felidae, which makes grain-free canned and kibble. I am going to keep a little kibble in their diet because I am afraid that otherwise I will never be able to leave home again. But Felidae makes a good grain-free one, and I will just feed it once a week or so. It may be my imagination, but Tubby looks a little thinner and he is certainly full of energy. He is currently batting a toy up and down the stairway. I know that weight loss in cats is a very slow process - they can become very, very ill losing weight quickly, kidney failure and all sorts of horrid things, so I am proceeding with caution. His love of food will hopefully keep him from starving himself. He seems to be consuming enough, although it can be hard to tell with two cats. StarClan, help me! (Any Warrior fans out there?)

    • Siobhan, love the sound of your zucchini 'thing' I am going to try that once the zucchini in my garden is big enough to pick Congratulations on being so slim!! That is inspiring for me...

I do think that sometimes we release more toxins than others and then we smell more. And if you don't sweat much regularly it kind of reeks once you do get a good bit going. I am pretty high right now - no hugs for anyone until I have showered or had a swim! Spent the morning outside mowing and watering and hauling heavy stuff around so I am very stinky right now. Might just have to hose myself off before I get in the kiddie pool or I'll wreck the nice clean water ...

      • Hi siobhan think we have same problem here in uk healthcare with diet , recent case of elderly patient dying of starvation in hospital (truly horrific ) think we have so many problems with elderly care generally and of course the food in uk nhs hospitals renowned for being especially poor...people really do not deserve could not agree more, wish that those with the influence would do something about all the bad diet advice we are being given ! Sigh....

Love your description of not being able to leave house due to cats begging !!! We have had that same kinda experience and the beseeching eyes, irresistible ! ....our most overweight puddy lost her weight over a year quite naturally , she really would only eat biscuits before...I think the transition took that long so weight didnt drop quickly but did help that we had one v sick cat around while we changed her diet, so we could not afford to even risk having biscuits in the house, so we had to stick it out with her and also she really went for the freeze dried treats which helped a lot, think I found variety seemed to help them and also giving some raw mince, or raw liver they seem to like mince lamb and pork . Sounds like even so it's going well and really any food with less than 10% carbs was the advice we had and that's what we currently feed them so I think there are a few fancy feast varieties with that... It's a bit of a shocker just how many grains/carbs pet food manufacturers manage to pack into some foods...

        • I read the labels carefully on the Fancy Feast and am shocked at the difference in ingredients from variety to variety. Some of them, while containing by-products, have no grains or added carbs. Some have wheat gluten and corn listed as the third or fourth ingredient! Do I need to tell you what I bought? I got a grain-free kibble at the pet food shop that they seem to love - probably too much. I put a bit of it out and it disappeared. Probably Tubby ate it all. (Sigh) I'm maybe 1/3 of the way there. Must keep trying.

Came home this morning with my first batch of wild Maine blueberries!!!!! In honor of them I opened a can of organic coconut milk and carefully scraped the cream off the top. The milk at the bottom I can put in my tea. I have been hesitant to add too much coconut milk into my diet because of the expense. But as I use it in different ways and learn what to do with it I should avoid waste and it will be more practical. I really want to get off cow's milk completely and it is just not good for my skin. Goat milk is better, but the supply is not constant, even here. (We're talking raw, of course. The regular stuff is available but what's the point of that?) This is a long way of saying that I am practically drooling on my keyboard in anticipation of eating a big handful of blueberries on a cloud of coconut cream.

            • The blueberries with coconut cream and a dusting of stevia was as divine as I imagined. I am quite hungry today. Very early this morning while still at work I had a chicken sausage, olives, and strawberries. Then when I got home I could not resist opening a new ham that I got at the food co-op - nitrate free, organic, etc. Ate a couple of slices and some blueberries. Then this afternoon more ham and blueberries with coconut cream. Food orgy.

Tomorrow I have a health assessment for work - I get tested for tobacco use, weight, cholesterol. If I hit the parameters I get a considerable amount off my health insurance. Since it is so bloody expensive I submit to this invasion of my privacy. I am very curious to find out my cholesterol numbers. I have never had either high or bad cholesterol so this will be my first test since going primal. Obviously I don't use tobacco and my weight is okay - even at my highest I was still okay as they are quite generous, and they rather ridiculously use BMI, which favors shorter people. I won't get the results for ten days or so. When I made the appointment, they made a big deal about fasting - at least 8 hrs and not more than 12. Apparently most people have a lot of trouble with this. I was a little worried because that means I have to eat something after 8:30 PM this evening and I usually don't. Fasting is a whole different thing for a primal person! I was thinking it would mess up my IF if I feel like doing one tomorrow, but of course I don't have to eat after the test. I will be very curious to find out my fasting blood sugar.

              • Okay, I'm officially a wacko. Called the cable company to see how much it would be to get the free TV channels and decent fast internet. 1) They no longer offer free TV service (they did offer it about 6 months ago.) 2) Everything is contract. 3) Not interested.

Before you think I'm weird for calling the cable company about free TV, you have to understand that I live in a rural area on the farthest edge of the digital signal, so a digital antenna is of limited use. Also you have to understand that I believe that most TV is poison, like a wave version of wheat or sugar, which is of course a particle. I don't allow tobacco, illegal drugs, gluten, or sugar in my home and I consider that 200 channels of cable TV is on the same level. And hell will freeze over before I pay $100 per month with a 2-year contract for such. Question EVERYTHING including Time-Warner.

I'll be staying with my Radio Shack antenna and my basic cell phone and my aging 3G connection and my 8-year-old computer. Thank you for listening.

                • Yep, been TV free since 1999 when I saw the first episode of Survivor, and decided I must have better things to do with my life. I do however like cable broadband, and I get plenty of news and media on the computer.

                  • I wonder how solid the business plan of a company like Time-Warner can be considering that virtually everything most people want to watch is or soon will be available online. I realize I am an anomaly; the only channels I watch are the PBS station and PBS World. I get any news I care to get online. I guess there are still enough people who live for TV that it is viable. There is also no competition - in an area like this, TM is the only game in town. Note: many of the patients in the hospital are TV addicts. Correlation or causation?

My kitties still look at me as if I have two heads if I offer them raw or cooked liver or steak... I tell them they're pod kitties and demand to know what they did with the real ones.

                        • For once it was fun getting my health assessment, mostly due to my weight loss. It is now fun to step on the scale. The fasting was no problem at all, just the usual. My blood pressure, as usual, was quite low - 100/60. Yes, I am conscious most of the time. The labs won't be back for awhile but I am waiting with bated breath.

                            • It is so cool, isn't it, to be checked out now with such weight loss from last yr. My doctor took both my hands in hers and said, now tell me exactly what's this primal thing. LOL. I took her my copy of Mark's book and left it at the front; she actually emailed me later with thanks and much interest.. Man, I love women doctors!!

Re: television - I went off tv yrs go about the time of reality shows, watched about 15 mins and never saw another one. I would read in the living room or outside or bedroom, or involve myself with hobbies while DH watched how it's made shows and sports.. He said one night he "missed me" watching tv w/him.. So I changed us from cable to satellite and signed on for 2 yrs for 80 bucks a mo. Something like 225 ridiculous channels and 2 premiums..I really like many of the HBO & Showtime shows, some are excellent and many are bust out laughing funny. So we're back to watching tv together a couple hrs a nite and recording on the DVR what we'll watch when we have time, like when this danged heat runs us indoors. Real feel in ATL today something like 103!!! Men do love the television more, tho. Probably because with the exception of mowing grass it's what they do when not at work
