  • These are the directions I used: How To Make Kombucha Tea at Home Cooking Lessons from The Kitchn | The Kitchn. But I confess I haven't made any for months. I lost my taste for it during the cold winter and I just don't have room to keep bottles of kombucha around. Occasionally I buy a bottle, and I have been enjoying water kefir and some other drinks available at the food co-op.

I keep hoping my eyes will improve...just went to the eye doc today. They are just the same. Sigh.

        • Thanks so much! That is pretty much what I have been doing, only the recipie I used called for some vinegar. I will try this one with the next batch.

          • Fermented foods are dependent on atmospheric conditions - maybe the environment isn't ideal for kombucha? But I'm no expert.

Didn't even make it until 10 PM! And slept until 8 AM. Woke up once, fed the felines at 4 AM because they were howling like banshee cats. I think I forgot to feed them last night.

I think maybe the different exercises I have been doing might be causing my long and restful sleep. I might be building up lactic acid, something I don't do in swimming. (At least not the way I swim.)

            • Against all the odds, I seem to have developed a cleaning system that works. This is amazing because in all my life I have never done this. I don't mean to imply my home is spotless or completely uncluttered. But it is better than it has ever been and quite okay for drop-in company, not the embarrassment of former days.

I start with the cat dishes/water/litter boxes. Water is changed in their fountain every day and everything thoroughly rubbed and rinsed. (No soap in water fountain except every few weeks.) Floor is swiffered. This seems to be key and everything follows from having clean floors. Once a week dusting and wet swiffering. Drapes on furniture are changed whenever needed, which is really, really often. I have a large number of small light drapes to put on whatever needs protecting. Laundry is ongoing, not once or twice a week as formerly. This is wasteful but just works better. Bathroom is tackled when the bathmats look yucky, which is every week. Things get wiped down regularly, though.

I still have closets and drawers in dire need of cleaning, but I am focusing on the positive.

A few days ago I made shredded beef in the slow cooker, a great success. I am going to get another one today. I've been eating it in paleo tacos - paleo bread cooked into tortilla shapes with salsa and avocado, generous heaps of shredded beef with au jus dripping all over. Messy but delicious.

I picked up my copy of It Starts With Food after seeing that Pebbles is re-reading hers and it fell open to a steak rub that I have to try, so maybe a ribeye is in my future. Hopefully I can find something good on sale!

Not sure about movement today. Maybe sprinting? I don't think the sprinting we did on the bikes counted yesterday because I wasn't too challenged, i.e. I didn't feel like throwing up at all. Maybe sprint today on the track and then swim. I am encouraged by Mark's post a couple of days ago that sprints don't need to be long, and they don't need to be numerous, just hard. I can stop sweating about seconds and repeats etc. and JUST DO SOME. I like doing sprints but I stress a bit about how many, how long, etc. And then they don't get done.

Rainy today, although it is supposed to clear later. Bike ride? We'll see!

              • You are motivating me to get to doing sprints again. I haven't done any in a long time. I have been focusing on weight lifting and regular old cardio. Sprints once a week might be just what I need to kick fat loss into gear.

The environment in AZ is very dry, maybe that is why my Kombucha hasn't been coming out right? We get our rainy season starting in July, so maybe there will be a difference then when there is more humidity. Right now our humidity level is most like about 5% (totally not kidding)

                • I would think that is definitely a factor. Hot and dry is not a happy consequence for fermented stuff. I'm sure you have A/C, but still not so good. But hopefully in July it will be better.

My arms are sore, and I was wondering why until I remembered I did some bodyweight exercises. Yeah! Must have got something right! One problem with being a spaghetti-armed pansy is that is it actually hard to do these exercises with any degree of effectiveness.

Wendy, definitely throw in some sprints to kick off weight loss. Mark is a big believer in this, and he oughta know! Maybe the easiest way is on a stationary bike, but you can do anything - rowing, running, elliptical. Running requires a certain level of fitness and ability to run, obviously, while jumping on the bike is okay for anybody. I know you are an experienced workout queen, so you don't need me to tell you this stuff. But I definitely encourage you to do sprints.

                  • Tip for Today

Sometimes it seems we are living in a sea of negative voices. No one is an island. Who we socialize with, what we read, watch and listen to has big effect on how we feel and think.

It becomes a lot harder to be happier if you let yourself be dragged down by negative voices. Voices that tell you that life will in large part always be unhappy, dangerous and filled with fear and limits. Voices that watch life from a negative perspective.

Replacing those negative voices with more positive influences is very powerful. It can be like a whole new world opening up.

Make it your goal to spend more time with positive people, inspiring music and books, movies and TV-shows that make you laugh and think about life in a new way.

Start small. First thing in the morning replace a negative habit of your choice with reading an uplifting blog or book or listen to an audio book or music while eating your breakfast.

                          • Did something highly satisfying but not something I recommend or plan to do often. Have you ever tried Taste of Thai rice noodles? Ingredients: Rice flour, water, tapioca starch. Just boil 'em up, decorate, and eat. Had a big bowl of them with a rather small amount of chili. Sometimes I just need to go with bulk! Not recommending this, just recording it. I'm sure it is not a good idea for weight loss, but maybe maintenance can allow for it once in a while.

It may say 5% on the displays, Wendy, but I swear right now our humidity level is minus 10 - sucking every bit of moisture out of us poor AZ dwellers.

                              • Feeling a little blah today. I think I know why. One difference between being 22 and being 55 - no matter how good you feel - is that you just don't recover as quickly. I've been much more active the past week and I think I just need to rest. Sure, I should move around, but I'm scaling back on anything hard for today. When I was swimming I was feeling very sluggish and got out of breath easily.
