When I was at my mom's I noticed my brother's hands and my sister's hands. And my own heavily calloused, cracked, hard hands. They have baby hands compared to me! Three of my right-hand fingers and two of the left have visible callouses.
Had a very discouraging conversation with Mom today. She complains and complains and won't do the slightest thing to change her situation. I am desperately worried about her, as are my siblings, but she won't consider any changes to her life. Not even moving a throw rug.
Tried to go swimming but too many kids at the pool. (Which is good for them!) So I went for a hike, which was really great. There is nothing like being outside in nature. I was walking underneath the trees, most of which are older than I am and will be here long after I am dust. It really strikes me because of PaleoCon and the exercise/food videos, which are shot in L.A. and rich in concrete, traffic, and noise.
Watched a program about the Amish, part of which was about the terrible shooting of the school children in 2006. Cried and cried. But the Amish are about so much more than that, and their faith is illustrated by their behavior after the shootings, which was all about forgiveness and acceptance.
Am excited about Renee Fleming singing at the Superbowl. Don't care about the rest.
Just a thought, but could your mom be experiencing the beginning of mental decline/alzheimers. Her refusal to make any changes might be because she's afraid she wont remember the change or be able to cover her decline.
She might feel safe, secure and more in control with the familiar.
No, she's been evaluated, she is sharp as a tack. She's always been like this. It's too much to hope she will change in her old age.
Just bottled up some bone broth, the best tasting I have made in awhile. I've been making rather boring bone broth lately, have become lazy. I was inspired by Michelle of Nom Nom Paleo's interview and made it with fish sauce, apple cider vinegar, carrots, celery, and onion. And a chicken carcass and some turkey bones.
Can somebody recommend an old TV show that I can hopefully see on Amazon or that might be available at the library, i.e. free? I like mysteries and quirky things. Hate soap operas, family dramas, schmaltzy stuff. Don't like anything too violent or horrible. Generally don't like medical dramas.
Re: hands. Have u ever noticed Martha Stewart's hands?? Kinda swollen, not gorgeous..They look like hands of a busy woman who's not afraid of tackling anything. I've heard people say she has had everything done for her, such bull, she's been a doer, like you. Soak em, moisturize, put cotton gloves on while you sleep.
Your mom: I've noticed the same thing with mine in the last yr or so. Independence becomes so huge in their minds. It's their last stand. All you can do is pray for her safety and gently encourage her to be careful with every step she takes.
I will give the tv shows some thought.. I am watching Justified while on the treadmill these days, but u probably wouldn't like it, violent. I like the guy a lot.
One of my all time favorites is Firefly. It is a space western (hard to describe). They are kind of like space pirates. The characters are great, there is lots of adventure, funny bits, and not too much violence. Just a geeky little suggestion from me. The Jericho series was one of my favorite ones too. Post nuclear holocaust, but again, not too much violence. It is much more about how the town comes together and changes to adapt to the new world. The main character Jake, is a real hottie too if you ask me.
