    • What a goat eats has a huge impact on the taste and quality of the milk. Every once in a while the dairy goats we had growing up would get into our olive orchard and the resulting milk would be nasty. The breed can make a difference too. Our LaManchas had much sweeter and creamier milk than our Nubians. It actually used to separate into cream and milk, which goat's milk doesn't usually do.

Your tip about reading labels is a great reminder! And to check labels of products you buy regularly as the ingredients can change. Hubby brought home some horseradish one day that had high fructose corn syrup, gluten and soy oil in it. That is when I started growing my own!

      • So true! And fortunately it can go the other way - Lea & Perrins of Worchestershire sauce fame (which is actually an honest-to-gosh fermented food) responded to consumer pressure and removed high fructose corn syrup from their American-sold products.

And yeah, on the other end - the 'natural' hairball stuff I used to give my cats added not just wheat, not just corn, not just soy, but ALL three. I sent them an email for all the good it did. Of course I switched to another kind.

Slept like a log today. Last night was quite mild, temps around 30F and a dusting of snow, but then around 6 AM temps dropped pretty dramatically and it is in the teens now. Can't quite wake up! I am not even hearing the garage door go up, or the slamming side door while I am sleeping. I often wonder what my landlord thinks of his silent tenant who only stirs in the evenings. Of course he knows I work nights but that just doesn't register with most people, him included.

          • Lol on that buzzfeed . I also liked the "25 signs that you're drinking too much wine".

Am very much looking forward to the Paleocon webcast! No kidding about big names. A veritable everyone who's anyone in the paleosphere. I think I may just splurge on buying the all access package. The bonuses look great too.

            • Funny, I was just thinking the same thing - I know that I will want to listen to each one several times. I am ridiculously excited about it because I really love these things and find them informative, entertaining, and the format fits very well into my busy life -i.e. I can do other stuff while listening. I was so surprised as I scrolled down the page and saw name after name that I already know and respect.

              • Well, had a weird experience with the fresh raw goat milk. I had not had anything to eat since 4 AM (as usual) and made myself a cup of coffee and added a dash of the milk - within ten minutes I had a raging headache such as I have not had in ages. Right in the front, my whole forehead felt like exploding. It was very sudden onset. I took three Advil (I have to be pretty desperate to take Advil, but I'm not good at suffering) and the headache was gone pretty quickly. I then made another coffee and this time added the processed usual stuff (Meyenberg). No headache. Felt great actually. I wonder what they are feeding the goats, if for no other reason than I would love to know what would produce such a reaction and obviously avoid it in the future.

                    • The bobotie gets a HUGE thumbs-up. Maybe I was just in the mood for it, but as the saying goes, it really hit the spot! So delicious! The delicata squash and the parsnips turned out to be perfect with it. I just cooked them because I had them, I would not have chosen them, but what a great combo! Okay, I'm using too many exclamation points here, but that is the result of having a seriously good dinner. Also, I followed the links and found a couple other recipes that look like they need to added to my repertoire. I listened to Mark's podcasts while I was cooking and now I am feeling seriously motivated.

                          • I am so glad you loved the bobotie - that is comfort food on steroids for me! And it is all good (unless you have one of those recipes that calls for breadcrumbs!) Bobotie is traditionally served on rice with Mrs Balls chutney as a condiment and usually a big green salad to go with it - but any way it comes is fine with me I thought that buzz feed about the paleo was hilarious.
