  • Tip for Today:

    Greens

Greens are your friend. This is the only exception to the ‘don’t eat stuff you don’t like’ rule. Try very hard to find something green and preferably leafy that you enjoy. You will be rewarded with happy bowels, fresher breath, less B.O. There is something cleansing about greens. (Full disclosure: I can offer no research but only personal experience.) If you are trying to lose weight leafy greens on a daily basis can be the key. Even if you don’t like them I suggest either just bare-pawing a few handfuls as an act of will or hiding them in something else. Hopefully you will like them. Personally my favorite way of eating them is with walnut oil and really good balsamic vinegar. Find your own favorite way and you will not be sorry

Anyway, here I am back at work. Drove here in the teeth of blizzard, but it was fine. Studded snow tires. Best things ever! I put extra food out for the poor birds who were looking very hungry!

Mark's post is totally spot on today!
I hate people who don't take responsibility for there actions! I'm sure you blew his mind.

I'm whining about windy and 40s dropping to 28, but clear. You remind me why I don't want to live where it snows.

      Yup, his post was good.

              • Well, that was quite a blizzard! Although we got downgraded and were sternly told that it was NOT a blizzard. Coulda fooled me!

Had a crazy night in the ER. You see weird stuff when you work there. It's like on TV, except everyone isn't beautiful and their clothes don't fit so well.

Have been going through lots of bird food and am glad to do so. The little birds need to eat! I do love feeding other creatures. I get the really high quality stuff, seeds with the hulls removed. I don't need mess and the birds don't need empty calories, not this time of year especially. They eat every bit. This morning there were birds huddled in the feeder! I cleaned out the snow and put some food on the floor also.

Slept very, very well for 5 hours and woke up feeling amazingly refreshed, like I have not felt in awhile. I am happy to be up while there is still some sunshine.

Crazy drive home in the blowing snow. Real winter wonderland stuff. The drive to work was good because I had a car ahead of me and having tail lights to follow was really helpful. Then coming home there was virtually no traffic and of course it was light. I had mentally prepared myself to do some driveway shoveling, but it didn't look so bad, and I got brave and just drove through it. No problem! Pulling the car into the garage was such a sense of relief and accomplishment. I got through three tough days of work AND a blizzard without being late or whiny.

It was a good thing I didn't shovel, because I had only been home for about 15 minutes when the plow showed up. That was a first. Usually it is hours and hours - I think we are last on his list. Not today. I would have been pretty annoyed if I had shoveled and then minutes later the plow appeared!

                • Today's Tip: Bone broth. It took me a while to get around making this regularly and having it around, but it is maybe the single best thing I did. It is easy to make, not nearly as daunting as the cooking divas on TV seem to make it. Try to have some every day. Bone broth with veg of any kind is a great meal whether or not you are trying to lose weight, and also a great way to work veg into your diet if that is a struggle for you. The aforementioned eggs can sneak in there as well.

And today's quote from Jesse Jackson:

'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up.'

                  • I took my own advice and had a bowl of bone broth with an egg yolk. Woke me right up! The sun was setting and it is so beautiful that I decided to bundle up and stamp out a path to the woodpile. Let me tell you, there is a TON of snow. It is all drifted and I couldn't follow the old path, so I made a snaky trail down the hill. Stamped it down well and made a few trips with a good armload of wood. My landlord surprised me by coming to the door and asking if I was warm and told me to stay safe but do anything I need to stay warm. He said that the Big House is very cold and they are having trouble staying warm. Tomorrow will be warmer but tonight will be below zero again. I have plenty of food and no need to go out. I know I said January should be alcohol-free, but you know what? There is a glass of wine in my very near future.

"How you do anything is how you do everything."

I cannot give a proper attribute because I don't remember. I saw a video many months ago here on MDA, and the presenter said this is his credo. Details matter. Little things make a huge difference. I throw this line out at work all of the time when I run across shoddy work and someone says, "Who cares?" Because it reflects on you, that's why!

Okay, my quote turned into more of a rant.

                        • I started my own subversive Real Food action plan. I bought a large bunch of bananas before starting my three shifts this week, and when people asked for a snack I innocently asked, "Would you like a banana?" Every single person wanted a banana. (For patients I checked with dietary first of course.) This was especially successful in the ER, where family members and friends are often there for hours with no resources at all except a very inadequate vending machine that dispenses potato chips and chewing gum. If they are really 'lucky' a staff member might offer peanut butter (with trans-fat - can you believe we even have the stuff on the premises?) and crackers (high fructose corn syrup, more trans-fat, and our favorite white flour). I handed out 12 bananas! Although bananas are not a big favorite in the primal/paleo crowd they are infinitely superior to the aforementioned offerings. They are also quite inexpensive and I can afford to hand them out indiscriminately. I am doing this on the QT of course. What a world we live in! A piece of fruit is subversive.
