    • Actually, they follow me around and sneak the cake into my shopping cart while I am looking at vegetables!

Ate about 4 AM - beef stew - at work. Had a good sleep this morning and woke up hungry. How great it is to realize I have a fridge full of really good food! Had half a sweet potato with butter, three chicken drumsticks, and a banana with coconut milk, hemp seeds, and honey. Also a cup of tea with goat milk.

Cold today! Still haven't turned on the furnace, have the woodstove going. Choir tonight. I practiced for awhile last night and feel happy with where I am in learning the music at this point.

      • Choir was very good last night. All is coming along at a good pace, and we will not only be ready, we should 'peak' at the right time. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a very long, very black skirt at the thrift shop for $2, which makes me happy. I can wear black slacks, but most of the women wear skirts. I already have a nice white blouse so I am all set. I actually like the two blouses I have for choir, one with long sleeves and one short. I was surprised to receive compliments on these items, from men no less, on the occasions I have worn them. No one wears this type of garment any more, but it is quite flattering.

Must get ready to go swimming. I would really like to go for a hike, though. I wish the pool hours were different, but there is nothing I can do about that.

For breakfast I had lamb chops and peas. I had a can of peas that I bought when I did my failed food stamp experiment. (Actually on a personal level it was quite successful as I learned that rice gives me diarrhea and white potatoes turn right into brain fog.) I was shocked when I read the label and discovered a fair amount of sugar has been added! Why would anyone take lovely peas and add sugar? They are really sweet already! I rinsed them thoroughly and hopefully removed some of the sugar (also the nutrients, alas). I hardly ever eat peas although I like them very much. They're not really primal and I haven't researched them. I think they are legumes? Although I am guessing that green peas don't contain much in the way of anti-nutrients.

Kitties are all good. They are sleeping a lot and not eating too much. They are much smarter than I am. They are totally primal.

          • Very nice swim, thank you! Although my lower back is hurting a bit. Wish I knew why! It's been bothering me for a few days, nothing major but nagging. Now I am going on a walk while the sun is shining.

            • Been missing my FitBit. That little device really improved my movement and was pretty fun. I've been looking at different fitness watches (for want of a better term) and decided I might as well wait for the new FitBit. There are cheaper ones, but they get bad reviews.

              • Watched a PBS Nature program about parrots. It was all about how parrots are becoming extinct in the wild but crowded into sanctuaries after being unsuccessful pets. Towards the end there was a piece about a parrot that was abandoned in a house and rescued when a neighbor heard him making noise. He was taken to a sanctuary and eventually put into an aviary with some other birds. He bonded with another parrot and there was a very touching sequence that showed the two birds preening and grooming each other, rubbing their heads together as birds do. I bawled like a baby. Then the film showed a bird that had been hatched and raised to be released in the wild. Off he flew. I cried even harder.

Now I'm watching a Nova program about the Kennedy assassination. Now, I am a hardened, compassion-fatigued healthcare professional who has scraped blood and brains (someone else's) off my shoes and out of my hair. But I had never seen the Zapruder film in motion, only stills from it. And the picture of the car seat afterwards. Made me throw up. There is just something different about seeing President Kennedy get murdered. It's profoundly disturbing on a whole different level.

Quite an emotional rollercoaster this evening!

                • Wow, what an experience I have just had. I just watched a show that detailed the events of November 22, 1963 - no conspiracy theories, no commissions, just a chronology of events and footage of Cronkite making the announcement - what a rush of memories it has brought back. It is like I was in the hallway of my home, my mother standing next to me sobbing, my grandmother on the staircase wailing in a way I had never heard. I am older than most people here, and if anyone is reading this, chances are you were not born when JFK was assassinated. This program brought it all back to me like a load of bricks falling on my head. I was very young, in fact it is one of my earliest memories. Like most people, it is an event that I have never been able to really reconcile myself with. Just too stunning and visceral. It changed everyone's life. I wish I could call my mom but it is too late and it would be stupid to dredge up stuff like this at this time of night. My mom is, of course, no longer young and she doesn't need any weird phone calls late at night.

                  • I remember that day. I was standing in the cafeteria lunch line next to my teacher. The cook asked her if she heard the news about the president. She said yes.

Later, when we were back in class the principal made the announcement that the president had been shot and killed. We were dismissed for the day.

Being one month shy of 7 at the time, I remember being afraid to walk home. I told my sister who almost 9, if someone could kill the president, they could kill us too.

That sister's son was born on November 22.

                    • Thank you for sharing that, marcadav. It was such a defining moment.

Recently I had a patient and as I always do, I verified her name and birthdate...she said '11/22/1963.' I said, "Seriously? Really?" She said her mother told her the shock brought on labor, no kidding.

                      • I've been listening to the Gluten Summit, and although lots of the presentations are very technical, this one is not, and could be very helpful for anyone struggling with food sensitivities. Also some great breakfast ideas!

                        • Just watched her videos. Funny you bring this to our attention right now - because I was just thinking soy could be one of my worst enemies. This pretty much answers my question. I'm eliminating soy from my diet! I'm going to give it my best effort to eliminate all 7 of the "foods" that she says cause weight gain and feeling yucky.

                          Gluten
                          Dairy
                          Soy
                          Eggs
                          Corn
                          Peanuts
                          Sugar and Sugar Substitutes.

A lot of her stuff is right in line with Marks. Her "bursts" are his "sprints". I like her -- but her products are pretty dang expensive!

                          • I listened twice - she has some great ideas! I am going to do her elimination diet and I have ordered her book from the library. (God bless ILL) Her products are super expensive but I am sure they aren't really necessary. I have been struggling for about three weeks with a patch of eczema on my chin - I thought giving up dairy for all and good would get rid of it, but after giving up dairy it is, if anything worse. I have already eliminated 6 of the 7 - the only one left being eggs. And as she says, pastured eggs are usually not a problem and can be reintroduced. But I'm going to double down on soy elimination - it is in most chocolate as soy lecithin. But there is chocolate that doesn't have it. I made my version of her smoothie when I realized I have most of the ingredients on hand. Avocado, coconut milk, almond butter, coconut, hemp seeds, a banana. (Banana needs to be replaced with berries.) It is sooooooooo good. I mean seriously delish. The avocado gives it a very smooth, creamy texture.

                            • I wrote down the recipe for the smoothy -- but she includes her virgin diet protein in the recipe. I suppose any protein powder would work as long as it was soy/egg/dairy free. ??? have to hunt for that I guess.

                              • I'm going to leave out the protein powder. It still tastes delicious and is super filling.

Went out shopping and spent plenty of money! Got a fancy little kettle I've had my eye on for some time. It was marked down and I found a little chip on it, so he gave me another 15% off. I'm pretty happy with the price. It is $50 more on Amazon! Also got a little electric heater for the bathroom, a box of fatwood, a lot of esoteric food. I had to laugh at myself when I was putting the items in my shopping bag. I grew up eating mac and cheese from the blue box, Wonder bread, Welch's grape jelly. Oh yes, don't forget the margarine! Yikes.
