  • Got a lovely surprise in the mail today - a little green owl from You-Know-Who-Who-Whooooo. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Livingpebb..._shop_redirect. I am so happy that he fits perfectly in my pocket. I think he will bring me good luck!

Had a good swim and trip to the grocery. Was surprised to find lamb shanks on sale. WOOT! I never buy lamb because it is usually $12-20 per lb. But this was a good deal. Stocked up on cat food so they don't eat me. Came home and had a big salad with chicken and olives.

We are having a big storm, luckily it is very warm. Howling winds and last night torrential rains. We are having a respite from the rain but it is supposed to start again. The power was out for 1 1/2 hours last night. I was sleeping so I didn't particularly care. The municipal works have been feverishly trimming trees around the power lines for the last month so I thought it was a bit ironic that the power was out. But it still happens.

Work next two nights, must rest.

    • Hanging head in shame. Had a bit of a binge. Two pieces of cheesecake and part of a piece of banana cream pie. Feeling a bit sick now, imagine that! Did not eat the crusts of course, but I'll bet I still got glutened. Well, we fall and we get up, we fall and we get up.

          • Glad your owl made it ok! It is a good size for a pocket isn't it?

I do like the sound of your new cookware - I'll have to go and look it up. I am needing to upgrade some of my cookware now that the kids are bigger - the meals are needing to be quite a bit bigger and then I also like to make enough to have leftovers. Leftovers are lovely!

That makes so much sense - it reminds me of something Deepak Chopra wrote some time ago - that your workouts/exercise/movement should be pleasurable. You shouldn't be doing anything that you have to make yourself do, you should not look on it with dread. And if you do, find something else! Which is I spend an hour or two every week pretending I am an otter, or a fish, and not worrying about my stroke, or how fast I am going, or how many laps I am getting in. Or God forbid, how many calories I am burning.

David! Glad to see you! And yes, we move on. I have paid for my sins with three small patches of psoriasis - lovely! Amazing how quickly that nastiness pops up. Luckily it seems to be disappearing already.

I love my new Staub, but it is quite pricey stuff. On the other hand, your grandchildren will fight over who gets to inherit it. I am finding myself dreaming about getting a couple more pieces...

              • Here at work, busy as all heck! This is a very popular place tonight. Tired and tonight is extra long because of the time change.

                • Whew! Last night was a long one. I know people often say that time goes by more quickly when you are busy, but I don't find that to be the case when I am really busy at work. A long night seemed endless! That extra hour was quite a challenge. I'm glad it's over. But I got some payback because when I woke up after a long sleep I realized I still had time to go swimming. There were a lot of people there but it was okay, very relaxing. Came home and had some soup, then got busy with some chores. Put the lamb ribs in the oven with some root veg, did some cleaning.

                  • The lamb ribs turned out really great. I don't know if it was my magic Staub pan or what, but it was so rich and meaty. I just browned the ribs, sauteed some onions, garlic, and celery, deglazed with red wine, added stock, and then dumped it all into the cocotte. Cooked it covered for one hour, then added some purple potatoes and cooked for another 45 minutes. Mmm mmm mmm. I did eat too much.

                    • Sounds delicious Lamb is one of my absolute favourite meats! It is so expensive here in the USA and not that easy to find the good stuff. I miss the SA lamb that has a distinct flavor because the sheep graze the desert plants.

                      • I heard Michael Pollan, one of the food gurus, talk about meat, and he said that if you are going to buy conventional meat, lamb is the way to go. Lambs are not brought up on feedlots, fed antibiotics, etc. In fact they are pastured. They have fairly pleasant if short lives, and are just about as clean a meat as you can get if you can't buy local natural stuff. But it is so expensive! Still, I was really surprised at how good the ribs turned out. I'll be keeping my eye out for more sales.

Had a weird dream that is staying with me. I dreamed I had a part in a play and I showed up on opening night and everyone was excited and talking about how great it was going to be and kind of pampering me, and I realized that I did not know my part and had not gone to any rehearsals. I was supposed to have learned the part on my own and I hadn't. Obviously this would never happen. The meaning is quite obvious! But it is a classic dream.

                        • I did not grow up eating lamb and haven't had any that I really cared for. Maybe the way it was prepared?

                          • Lamb, lamb, I love lamb. And ever since I found out that lamb does not mean kill 'em at 8 weeks, but that they get up to 10-11 months, I don't feel so bad about eating it.

                            • Yes, I think it definitely matters how you prepare it. I personally like simple preps best. Salt, pepper, onions, etc. It has a very distinctive taste that can be off-putting if you aren't prepared for it. Also I find that it doesn't keep well -maybe overnight, but you can't keep it around for leftovers for any length of time, IMHO.

After one night off I'm back at work. Swam today and am delighted to discover the pool is going to be open for an extra hour during the day. That means I might be able to get a swim in the afternoons most days.

Food is good today. Sipping on a booch here at my desk. Must get up and move around.
