    • Ha! I just bought one on Ebay! Turns out that the one I had (before they were bought out by Wham-o) is an original, made by the company that introduced them in 1972. Mine must've been purchased in 1981 -82.

I couldn't find one just like my old one, a leather one, now they're more often crocheted hemp fiber (what else?). But I wanted one like my old one. There was one on Ebay from right after Wham-o bought them out and before they changed them. It was only 16 bucks still in the original packaging!

I'll practice up a bit before I post any videos, Tomi!

Now all I need is a Greek fisherman's hat, some Chinese Tai Chi shoes, Levis 501s and a Grateful Dead T-shirt and I can time-travel back 30 years and fit right in.

      • Oh, I forgot to mention that SWMBO reminded me that after playing hacky-sack with those boys for ten minutes, I was crippled for the better part of a week! I'm in better shape now though! :-)

        • Hey, I have all of that stuff! All I need is the hacky sack. And now you are in awesome shape!

Don't I need something to seal the food with the sous vide thingy?

Pretty hungry, waiting for drumsticks to be done...

            • I don't own any type of camera, so someone else will have to provide video. I'm sure I won't be worth looking at anyway.

The chicken drumsticks turned out fantastic. I do love spicy food. I brined 'em for an hour or so, then coated them in sriracha, coriander, turmeric, paprika, cumin, salt, pepper - the usual stuff I mix up in various combinations. Baked them in the oven for an hour. I managed to get them tender and nicely done and browned but not burned and dried out. (My specialty!)

I am still hoping the slow cooker comes today. At this point I have a lot of bones and it would be at least two batches in my little one. Of course there is still tomorrow. Actually by then I will have even more bones.

Am down to my last bag of Bengal Spice and the yerba mate is ominously low also, so I had better go to the store.

              It's RAINING! Hooray!

Great! I was wondering about that.

                  • After a nice thunderstorm it is now a lot hotter and a lot more humid. Haven't turned on the A/C yet, and I'm going to a lecture in a few minutes. Hope tonight is better.

The slow cooker is here! Woo-hoo! Just in time. I braised up a chuck roast, very spicy, in the oven and it is very obvious that I have way, way too much sauce. I need to get another 2-lb. chuck and braise it up. The sauce is extremely delicious and extremely rich. I made a horrid mess in the kitchen. All cleaned up now though. Also got a new sleep mask that is greatly superior to the old one I have. This one is much lighter and cooler and doesn't press against my eyes.

Had some purple potatoes with gremolata. I find that to be seriously delicious. I'm going to take it to the choir potluck next week. I wonder if anyone else will like it? Just parsley and shallots all chopped up, mix in some olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice. Pour it over boiled potatoes and squeeze some more lemon juice on top. I boil the potatoes in salted water so I add no salt to the finished dish. I have found that if I taste the water and it is barely salty it will season the potatoes perfectly. For me, of course.

Calves are a bit sore from my long walk yesterday. I was afraid I overdid it in my Pace Gloves, but no ill effects to the feet. I had to stop wearing the Pace Gloves at work because it was sadly obvious they do not protect my feet adequately from heavy equipment, needles, scalpels, etc. I wear them part of the time but not all the time. It is too bad because I love the fact that I can wash in the washing machine.

                    • The slow cooker is already in use. My first batch of bone broth in the new device. It works beautifully, very simple, the perfect size for me, 3.5 quarts.

Had some drumsticks for dinner. Watched a show about leopards and one about a tiger. Now watching a show about Buddha. Did some squats and lunges and heaved some weights around. Pretty tired, off to bed.

                      • So glad to hear that your cats are better! I love my slow cooker but it has been rather neglected of late. I need to get some broth going again ... and chuck roasts do come out really well in them too. Good on you for getting going on your exercise again - sounds awesome!

                        • Yes, I was feeling quite horrible about my poor kitties. I take my responsibilities towards other living creatures very seriously. They are dependent on me and can't just decide to go somewhere else. Today is better, all of them ate normally and other things seem to be normal also.

Love the slow cooker! I think I got just the right one. It is nice to look at, stainless steel and black, has an oval shape that is easy to handle, perfect size for me, not too big, not too small. Very simple to set, and it changes to warm for 8 hours at the end of the cooking time.

Just had a thought - I wonder if I could get the cats to eat bone broth? That would be so good for them. I'm going to try putting some on their food.

Slept very nicely in my cave. Back is all better. It is beastly humid but not hot, although the heat is supposed to build up again. I am going to start my work cycle tomorrow and I am greatly relieved to have the A/C! I will be able to sleep and the white noise it provides will block the horrid woodchipper.

                          • One thing I have learned on this journey is something so obvious that I wonder it didn't hit me in the face long ago. The simple fact that what I eat each day will have a big effect on how I feel the next day. If I feel good, even-tempered, clear-minded, energetic, and not hungry, this is a result of eating clean the day before. For instance, last night I had two chicken drumsticks for a light supper at about 7 PM. This morning I feel all those things that I mentioned. I wouldn't feel this way if I had eaten two chocolate bars and drunk half a bottle of wine. Well, duh.

A while back I announced I was going much more towards paleo, i.e. cutting way, way back on dairy, alcohol, and sugar. More veg and more fruit. This is going very well. Dairy has been reduced to a splash of whole milk in my tea in the morning and occasional butter for cooking. My usual chocolate has been banished and now I have a square of Green and Black's 85% every other day or so. I'm not an ascetic - I had some ice cream a few days ago and enjoyed it thoroughly after making sure it didn't contain gluten - read those labels! Hint: Talenti's gelato is free of such things, and Haagen-Daas is also pretty clean, no HFCS, etc. Stay away from Ben and Jerry's. It's full of crap.

                            • Just had a breakfast of yesterday's chuck roast and sauce with an egg cooked in it. It did that magic melding thing and transformed from a really good beef roast into something sublime. So delicious and very, very filling. Also finished the raspberries before they get moldy. You know how berries are.

I have a huge amount of stock from the overnight adventure in the new crock pot. I don't know if it my imagination but it is infinitely superior to my previous stocks, which were pretty good but not great. Maybe you just need a lot of room to make good stock. I skimmed off the fat from the top along with some broth of course for the kitties. This stock is good enough to just drink of its own. Also it has a beautiful golden color. I always put the onion skins in it, which provides nice color, but this is particularly nice. Anyway, I can see now how I can use this pot to always have good protein choices available. It will be very easy to pick up veg and meat and just put it all in the slow cooker. I can get fancy and brown stuff, or roast it, but really I can just throw it all in. A good thing is that I didn't get a lot of aroma. I say this is good because I have found it very difficult to sleep with luscious aromas drifting about. This probably isn't a problem in a larger home, but I'm in a really small space here. This cooker is sealed up much better. I would like to think that all that aroma is now getting transferred to the food!

                              • I've done pork shoulders for pulled pork in the crock pot and it came out great! Probably not a substitute for long slow smoking, but not at all bad either!

                                Enjoy!
