  • I would just flip the worm out of the pan and into the trash. (Even if it had been touching the food!) And eat my proscuitto-goat cheese! Things fall/fly into food: there's no getting around it.

    • Lol, I would be checking the food out carefully looking for any worm family members and then would finish cooking and eat Without a word to the rest of the family so they didn't know

      • I'd remove the worm, look over the rest of the food and if it wasn't the worm's point of origin I'd keep going.

Reminds me of a story: Years ago when my older boys were 6 and 4, we lived at a place with a lot of acreage and we had a big garden. The broccoli came in and was the favorite vegetable of my eldest boy. We were having lunch with my Mother, who came to visit. The table was all set and the steamed broccoli was already out and buttered and Eldest was chomping at the bit. I said to him "go ahead and eat your broccoli" to keep him occupied. He tucked right in.

When we all were sitting down and eating, my Mother said, "Oh this broccoli has worms!" It did! Very dead Green worms, the same color as the broccoli. I checked mine, and it had a worm, my ex found one in hers and so did Middlest. But Eldest had eaten all his broccoli without so much as looking at it and likely had eaten at least one worm.

Me being a sensitive and caring father started singing, "Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms!" to the delight of everybody at the table, except Eldest. I stopped when he started tearing up. :-( (I can be an ass).

20 years later, Eldest doesn't much care for broccoli or that particular song, but cannot remember why...

        • David, you are a scream! (Runs to check broccoli)

I laughed pretty hard as I read over all your replies, because I basically did all of them in sequence. My first thought was to dump everything. My appetite had vanished. But you know what? That was some expensive chow I had in that pan. I took out the worm and continued cooking. I put it on a plate and walked away for a while. That bit of distance let me recover my appetite. It also let me think about where the worm came from. And the most logical, simplest explanation is that it was in my hair, and fell out when I leaned over the pan. Before you think that I am the most disgusting, hygienically challenged person ever, I hasten to add that I had been outside in the rain walking under trees immediately before cooking lunch, and that my hair is quite curly (despite the pic many pages back, where it is straightened and well smashed down.)

So I went back to my food, carefully cut it up and examined it, and found no trace of worms or anything else that I wouldn't want to eat. And then I ate it.

I also examined my hair, and didn't find any more vermin. Did spend some extra time in the shower.

Just a day in the life.

            • If you waited 30 seconds that worm would have been cooked... Just sayin. Besides- how often do you get to eat a creature head to toe? or should I say point to point... Bet he would have been crispy!

Keep in mind that the other things you had in your pan were the belly of a pig and the lactation of a goat! When put that way the worm doesn't seem so bad does it?

Oh, it was crispy all right! I'm not sure I will ever get the nerve to purposely eat an insect. I am sure I have ingested them in the course of eating other things, all right. I'm not that naive - did you read David's broccoli story? It is silly, though. I can eat dead pig and fermented goat body fluid, but a worm freaks me out! Actually, I think it was the movement that got me.

                  • Here I am at work once again, my third night in a row and July 4 to boot. Slammin' busy. Which is good! Had an honest-to-gosh lifesaving event - a patient was down and unconscious and as we prepared to rescusitate, for some reason I reached in and pulled out some banana. Patient coughed and woke up! Whew. And no, we are not supposed to stick our hands in people's mouths - too dangerous for us and potentially for them also. But since the outcome was good no one is complaining. Happy Independence Day!

Haven't talked much about my food lately, but it has been pretty basic. Summer, you know. I made some turkey soup that is getting me through my work nights, zoodles, green salad, apples. Goat cheese. Salami. Organic local-made dill pickles.

                        • Great journal! You're a very talented writer. I stopped by because somebody else mentioned the goat story in their new journal so I had to check it out. I don't know if I'll be able to get through all 300 pages but I'm gonna keep poking around in here. Keep up the good work!

                          • Oh, you don't have to read the whole thing - you would probably fall asleep for one thing. Actually, if you are having trouble getting to sleep some night, just pop into page 112 or something - you'll be racking zzzzzs in no time!

Sabine, is that really the #1 fantasy? I am indeed living the life! Some nights more than others. I am glad to have a bit of time off - I don't have to work again until next Thursday night.

Okay, I'm gonna complain a bit. It's hot. It's baking, steaming hot. My living room floor was so hot that it hurt my feet to walk across it. Remember I don't have air conditioning, that is rare in these parts. Even places that do have air conditioning (like the hospital) can't adjust too well when the temp gets into the 90's. I was so tired that I did sleep fairly well despite the heat. It was when I got up and started moving around that it really got to me. My sleeping cave does indeed stay in the bearable range, and by this I mean 10 degrees cooler (at least) than the living room. Good thing I made it! The sun is dipping down and it rained a little (very odd), and so I opened all the windows, doors, skylights, etc. to let the heat out and it is now okay. I don't do well with heat. My feet are swollen and itchy.

Had a major fail/brain collapse/I don't know what. I ate an entire pint of sea salt caramel gelato. Not sure why I did this, or why it seemed so important to do it at the time. I actually did it with great determination. I have no idea what I was thinking. I have paid for my sin with a pounding headache and some pretty unpleasant nausea. I don't think I have ever eaten an entire pint of gelato or ice cream at one sitting.

The library had some presents for me. Three DVDs - Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and the second season of Game of Thrones. Actually, that is a lot more than three DVDs. Gonna have me some fun with those this evening!

                            • Looks like it will be another scorcher! I am thoroughly tired of being sweaty. Ah well, this too shall pass.

Oddly, my gelato binge of yesterday has left me happy and relieved to be back on whole foods. I don't do well on junk. Just had two duck eggs and some raspberries. Also had a cup of yerba mate, which has become my favorite wake-up beverage. I can see why it is so beloved by many.

Going to a craft fair and I don't know what else. I have volunteered for a charity event for the local land trust, which I am somewhat regretting although it will probably turn out to be fun. I thought I was going to be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, but I got put down as TRASH MANAGER! Yikes. Couldn't figure out a way to get out of that. Also not thrilled that I am the only person down for the exalted trash position, although I have been told that everyone will help. Hauling bags of trash down from the party meadow and picking dirty paper plates out of the trees is not how I would particularly like to spend the first Saturday I have had off in a month. Okay, enough whingeing.

                              • The heat is getting me down, much as I am trying to fight it. Went to the craft show and purchased a new handbag made by a local lady. She uses Vera Bradley fabrics and makes really nice bags for 1/3 of VB products. I should ask her if she makes clothes. I would love to have some colorful scrubs made from great fabric. The company that made my dinosaur scrub pants has ceased operations, and to my knowledge there is no one making custom scrubs. If anyone knows of somewhere, send me the link!

Went to a second craft show just outside of town, but the same vendors are always there, three years now, and it isn't so interesting. There is really nothing I want to look at there.

I haven't been swimming in awhile. I went to the pool on Monday (I think) and it was crowded, dirty, noisy. Summer people! I'm not getting enough exercise. Funny how people always talk about living in a warm climate to be outside more, but I am outside way, way more in the other seasons. It's misery IMHO to try to exercise in this heat. I did check out the weight and cardio rooms at the gym, but there seemed to be virtually no air circulating. I'm just not a hot weather person.

Found a really cool bladeless fan at Rite-Aid, but it is $75. I will pass on that for now. I have three fans, could use a couple more, but I am conscious of needing to save space. The tower style ones are the most practical for someone in a small space like I am, but there aren't any to be found around here. I could Amazon one, of course.
