  • Heh, I don't think their parents ARE teaching them anything! Might be the problem. So sad.

Got up early this morning and put a brisket in the oven before I went to church. Am I brilliant or what? Came home to that lovely aroma...and it tastes as good as it smells. So easy too. I used the timer on the oven so I didn't have to worry about getting home or anything like that. I'll have to do that more often.

Going to a movie this afternoon with a couple of friends, should be fun. And I got invited to join a choral group, although I will probably decline. I don't think I can manage another evening, I'm employed after all. I am flattered, though.

I was thinking about the opera, and the performance these artists give - it's unbelievable. The star soprano had to roll around on the floor, get up, get her dress ripped off, kneel down and KEEP SINGING with her face in the baritone's crotch. I have enough trouble singing standing in one place! And no one is ripping my clothes off and I don't have to sing wearing only my underwear. And my knees are in pretty good shape, but really, kneeling on bare floor is hard for any length of time. And this is in front of millions of people!

    • Was up in the middle of the night, being sick, and read 'My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece'. As good as you said. I enjoyed it very much and am recommending it to Middlest.

      • I am very sorry that you were sick, but I am glad you enjoyed the book, and maybe it helped take your mind off feeling bad. I really think it is extraordinary.

Just went to see 'Argo' with my posse. Really enjoyed it, surprisingly. Pretty entertaining. Normally that is not my kind of movie. For one thing, it doesn't have subtitles. Well, a few. Things like, "Death to the infidels." But it was good.

I got invited to the yacht club Xmas party as a prospective member! I don't have a yacht. Don't know how to sail. Apparently that is not a barrier. Hey, Par-TAY!

          Okay, now this sounds interesting.

I remember it was delicious, though, with regular cheese. I hope it is good as while I was making it I remembered why I haven't cooked 'recipes' lately - it is bloody expensive.

I have kind of a dilemma. When I was at the pool today, some kids came in - a regular group that comes in every Friday afternoon. There are several groups of kids that have pool time. They were in the locker room, running around, and they peeked at me in the shower. This has happened a few times. Now I am not overly modest, but it is upsetting to me to have these girls gawking at me like that. Today it occurred to me that perhaps no one has taught these girls that this behavior is totally inappropriate. And maybe it is time that someone did. In fact, someone needs to. So I asked to talk to the pool director, but she had stepped out. I let it go, but I plan to say something. This makes me distinctly uncomfortable and it is wrong. I don't want the girls to get in trouble, but I honestly think they need to be told this is wrong. What do you think?
Absolutely. Do something. Get the pool director in on it for sure.

          And that casserole sounds amazing.

Concerning Argo, that has had a few Canadian noses out of joint. History was again altered to make it look like the Americans were running the show and taking all the initiatives, when the reality was quite different. Ken Taylor was much more proactive than that and in real life was the hero of the story. To give Affleck credit, when he had this brought to his attention, he got Taylor to write the post-script for the movie. Taylor, being a diplomat by profession, came down very softly. This also keys into one of my Hollywood pet peeves, the presentation of living history that is significantly different from the reality. People, and I mean the general public, always take it as being the way things really happened. This offends my sense of integrity, and it just really seems like a raw deal for the people who have been misrepresented. I will stop now, before this rant really gets going.

          • Oh, so true. I had heard the actual story a few months ago, and the movie is just that - a movie. It's mostly fiction. The basic bones are true - six Americans hidden by Canadians and snuck out posing as a film crew. Virtually everything else is Hollywood. Some bits actually made me laugh out loud. Like when they show up at the airport and there were no reservations and supposedly someone was making them at the same moment and they popped up on the computer - ummm - this was in 1980. We're talking DOS here. I worked in reservations for awhile when I had a broken leg and let me tell you, it didn't happen like that, particularly for international reservations. That's something that drives me crazy about movies because people think real life is like that and it certainly isn't. Even with all the computers and stuff we have today, things just usually don't happen that fast (says the person who just waited four weeks for the loan info to come through from a car purchased at the beginning of November.) Okay, I'm ranting now and I'll stop.

            • The mushroom/squash thing has turned out to be worth it. I have had many pleasant meals around a serving of this golden brown loveliness. Here is the recipe:

Butternut Squash and Mushroom Lasagna: Recipe: bonappetit.com

Of course you omit the lasagna noodles, and I use chicken broth instead of veg broth. I cut the recipe by at least 2/3rds and it was plenty for me for several days. I used cottage cheese instead of ricotta and I really didn't measure anything, just threw in the ingredients in approximate amounts. You don't have to measure exactly. I highly recommend the fresh herbs, they make the dish. Luckily I have them growing on my windowsill so it was easy and not too costly. I just had some turkey chunks cut up in it for lunch and was it ever good!

Good swim today, but couldn't get to talk to the swim director. I asked her if she would be around after my swim, but she was nowhere to be found. I will get to her, though. I think it is important.

              • Had a gluten-free muffin that gave me terrible indigestion. When will I learn? No more!

Made my first payment on the car. It wasn't too painful. All will be well. It is so great having a new car.

So far work is okay. Nothing horrible has happened yet. Here's hoping.

                • Evelyn532, keep your effing spam out of my journal. (Why am I talking to a spambot?)

Well. Had a little excitement but all turned out well. See, that is what happens when you say nothing horrible has happened. Not superstitious or anything!

                  • So what was the excitement? You can't drop a little tidbit like that and leave us hanging!! Sorry you weren't able to talk to the swim director ... maybe you should be a little more forceful next time? Any news on your organic farmer - he sounds really nice!

                    • His emails have suddenly stopped...don't know why! I will send another and then give it up. Maybe he met someone else?

I should have been more insistent on talking to the swim director, but I had to get ready for work. But I don't want to let any more time go by. I really need to do this although it is unpleasant and best to get it over with.

Excitement at work was something we call a 'Rapid Response' - it is where the patient has a pulse and is breathing but is in severe distress of some kind. But it turned out okay so that is good.

I'm wearing my 'new' thrift shop cargo pants and got three compliments. It's funny because I don't consider them to be very flattering. They are baggy but not nearly as baggy as my old ones, which won't stay on any more. They are cut for someone much curvier than I am. I like them, though. I've been wearing regular clothes to work instead of scrubs for the most part. I don't know why I have a sudden aversion to scrubs. Maybe because I don't really have any that fit. Loose is good but way too baggy is not good. My scrub tops are HUGE. When I think they used to be tight in places...

                      • I like the way women look in cargo pants when they are a bit loose, soft and worn a bit (the pants). Somehow the texture of the worn fabric accentuates curves.

I have no doubt that you deserve the compliments! :-)

                              • I just sent the farmer a email asking if he wants to meet up. We'll see! I know people get busy, especially farmers and most especially farmers with kids.

David, I think a lot of people feel the way you do about cargo pants because mine made quite a splash. It's so weird to be getting all these compliments and comments and stuff. All in all I had about ten people compliment me, what is that about? Magic pants? Should I permanently affix them to my lower half? Should I wear them on a date (if I ever get one?)

Woke up this afternoon with a crazy craving for meat. Dreamed about hamburger patties. I'm serious. Ate some sausage. I have some seriously delicious tomato sauce leftover from the brisket (of course the brisket itself is long gone) and I'm thinking of having that with some eggs. Must go to grocery.
