Well, Day Two of journaling here. I didn't feel like I wanted to write much about my primal journey when I started the journal yesterday, but then I found myself thinking about things that I wanted to share when I woke up this morning. As I can get around to it. I do want to say right now that while the dietary changes that I have made are central and so amazingly effective, exercise also promises to be mind blowing.

I monitor my vitals - and my blood sugar - at home. I started the blood sugar monitoring in order to understand what my body does on a very low carb (VLC) diet - and to see what effect that specific foods have on my blood sugar. Then, I started testing my blood sugar before and after taking a walk around the neighborhood. Without fail, a walk lowers my blood sugar significantly.
I feel like I ought to be wearing a bumper sticker that says: "Don't follow me I am lost." I am just a seeker like everyone else.

So glad to see you are keeping a journal! When I first started low carbing to control diabetes, I realized I could have an icecream if I took a walk afterwards. I quickly got into exercise because I saw the positive effects so immediately. "My body, my science experiment," worked so well for me that I tested my bg 4+ times a day for the first year.

Hi Pam, thanks - and glad to see you here! Exercise does appear to be self-reinforcing.

My local primal buddy remarked yesterday that my hair looks darker. I had thought so, too, recently - but hadn't said anything about it. I actually like my mostly silver hair. I am blessed to have nice hair that has turned such a pretty silver that the two stylists who cut it both independently have said they are glad that I don't color it. My hair is not dry or brittle like greying hair often is. The texture and oil/shine has hardly changed. Plus, I really didn't think my hair was lovely during the transition from auburn to silver. So, I don't particularly want to reverse this process.

I have heard about people's hair getting darker again, but wasn't sure that I even believed it. Now, I wonder what's causing my hair to darken. Could it be the primal diet? Could it be the iodine therapy? Isn't hair color dependent on melatonin? Could this change indicate increasing melatonin levels? I HAVE been sleeping extra soundly lately. Anyone have any ideas or experiences to share?

Seems that it is possible that replacing melanin in the body can cause gray hair to darken again. And, NO, I am not taking melatonin or related supplements. Both higher protein and iodine intake are implicated in increasing melanin. Will be interesting to see what happens over time. While I don't really care a lot about the color of my hair, I DO care about what increasing levels of melanin suggest about over all health - as well as also indicating if I'm on the right track with supplementation and other lifestyle matters.

I have some GREAT news to share! I've been looking for an iodine, low carb, natural treatment friendly doctor in my area who was taking new patients - and I just found one! Here's how I found her listing - thorough the Breast Cancer Choices "iodine literate practitioners" referral site:

              Iodine Literate Practitoners Directory

I spent some time exploring her website and talking with her staff - and I have a really good feeling about her! I have paid my deposit and have an appointment for later this month for a new patient intake.

She's a board certified internist who does integrative medicine - belongs to all the right orgs and provides exactly the types of services that I want. She emphasizes natural treatments. She prefers to have patients who work for their own wellness and who minimize the number of medications needed. They teach wellness classes and promote resources like for grass fed beef on their website.

              Woo Hoo!

Now that is awesome news! Glad you are thinking of things to post in your journal.

Good for you on the hair darkening. I color mine and plan to keep coloring it until I am 100. I know, I know Bromide bomb.

I thought you'd be happy to hear that I found this "iodine doctor" - and she really looks more compatible for me than Dr. Brownstein would have been. Integrative medicine is where I am most comfortable - combines the best of both worlds. I'll post my experience when I do see her later this month.

Hair color may or may not have bromide in it. There are versions that are less toxic than others - and if you use the iodine to detox ongoing it may be OK anyway. I colored my hair when it was in transition. Didn't use color much before that. Over time, I developed an acute sensitivity to the hair color so I stopped. Cut it short and then let it grow out. By then, my hair was far enough along in the color change that it looked fine. And, I started getting complements when it grew out. So, its a non-issue for me now.

Congrats on the doc! Those are rarer than hen's teeth to find.

So, I got my lab work dates confused for a minute. I actually went this morning to get blood work done. I took a walk before heading for the labs, to help lower my fasting blood sugar.

I have developed the "dawn effect" since going VLC primal. My fasting blood sugar in the morning is the highest of the day. I do IF until the afternoon and it comes down a bit. Eating a protein/fat meal then produces a lower blood sugar without the usual after meal increase in blood sugar.

Anyone else have this "dawn effect" pattern?
