  • My sister lived at home until this year (just turned 26) and brought most of her stuff with her when she moved in with her boyfriend. I left most of my stuff at home when I was in college and then took almost all of my stuff when we moved into the apartment last year. I left behind some things in boxes that I put in the attic (high school and college papers, nostalgic crap that I'll want in 10 years, but not now). If the kids are still in school, it seems reasonable to let them store it (to me), but if they move in with mom after graduating or get their own place, they better figure out what to do with their stuff!

If my belongings were destroyed, I'd try to grab my camera and wallet (and my cat!!!!), but really, everything could be replaced. I have a backup hard drive, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to grab it if it was urgent. I do need to replace it (the one I have has a separate power cable and it's kind of big, I want a portable one). I have several hundred gigabytes of data so I can't store it online, unfortunately

    • I'm thinking backing up my photos to an online storage site is necessary b/c what happens if my house burns down while I'm at work and not there to grab anything? Maybe I'll do that tonight so I don't have to worry about it anymore. Then I'll just have to worry about all my wedding photos.

      • Seriously......... its not yet noon and I have pee'd 6 times already! I'm on my second large mug of tea - the second is Green Tea with Pomogranite (sp?). YUMMY

        Breakfast:
2 eggs seasoned only w/garam masala.

Need to stock up on some of our India spices. Garam Masala is nearly gone -- need to buy some fresh ginger asap -- cardomom pods are down to 1/2 of the jar. We need to go to Bellvue to visit BIL so we can shop at our favorite India supply store. We actually had left over Chai after Thanksgiving dinner - that NEVER happens! A couple of the biggest chai consumers were not at the gathering - that has to be the answer. Plus SD#2 was not there - and she almost ALWAYS takes all the leftovers home with her. Good thing I got rid of my lactose pills - keeps me from drinking any! A "pot" which translates to a little over a gallon of chai has TWO cans of sweetened condensed milk. I certainly don't need to be fighting the desire to drink a cup of chai every evening. In case you want to try some REAL chai........... here's how to make it.

Water in large pot - bring to boil - add 15-20 tea bags (just regular tea).
Add: Four 1/4" slices of ginger root
        1 TB cardomom seeds
        5-6 curry leaves (fresh)

Let steep at a slow boil for 30 minutes
Add: 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk
2 TB vanilla - the real stuff, not the imitation kind

Different regions of India us other spices....... some will add cinnamon or cloves. We don't.

Let it simmer on LOW for a couple hours uncovered -- this allows for the richness and fullness of the chai to develope. In true Indian fashion - the chai would be "pulled" ........ pouring it from pot to cup from a distance of a couple feet (if you're really good at it) - but it really doesn't change the taste. The people selling it on the streets of India will "pull" it - maybe its just for the AWE factor????

a "skin" will form on the top as it sits - its something in the milk that causes this. Just skim it off and throw away. Strain the chai and keep refridgerated. It'll stay good for a couple weeks in the fridge - longer than that and the milk goes bad.

That being said............... Mark's post today points out the fact that chai is primal - although the sugar and milk are questionable. Let me know if you give it a try.

better go get ready for work............. I wonder if I could manage to not work today. Maybe I should call the boss???

never tried it. I think that would radically change the flavor and consistency of the chai. I'm sure my husband would never go for it. He LOVES my chai - says I'm the best chai maker in the family - so if I tried to change anything - he wouldn't be happy. I'm sure he would say something like, "its okay, but its not YOUR chai" .......... I could use Stevia to sweeten it I guess.

            • What are curry leaves? Curry is a blend of spices, so I am scratching my head trying to figure out how they make leaves out of it.

I buy the chai tea bags and just make it like regular tea. I tried boiling it in milk the first time I had it, and found it really gross. Although it doesn't look like I was doing it right. But I think I'll stick to my inauthentic version. If I learn how to make it right, it will just be another temptation.

I have the occasional cappuccino, which shares the milk and sugar problem. But I usually use stevia now. You might try honey in your chai. I have tried cappuccino with coconut milk. Not a success. It was drinkable, but really not so great.

No scale, eh? That will be quite the experience, if you're used to weighing yourself daily. Give it at least a month to see if you like the experience once you've gone through withdrawal. Do you have a pair of pants that just barely fits? They are great for an objective measurement of what's happening with our bodies. Even if our tummies are full, the thighs will tell the real story. I consider that more reliable than scales, when you come right down to it. They can vary wildly, depending on how much water and food is in our system, but thighs don't change unless you have really put fat on or taken it off. I haven't weighed in a couple of days but my pants feel pleasantly baggy, so I know I'm not gaining.

              • Curry leaves are just that......... from the curry tree.

                Google Image Result for http://www.gardenrant.com/.a/6a00d83451bd5e69e2015436a0a0a2970c-pi

see if that link will take you to the picture of the curry tree - if not google "curry tree". Yes curry is a mix of spices, but its also a plant. A beautiful plant! We were growing one in our living room until it got spider mites and I had to get rid of it. We were using the leaves in chai and all of our indian cooking.

I do have a pair of pants that I will use as my guide while I don't have the scale to rely on. I'm giving it until Jan 1 - and then I'll see if I need to invest in another one.

Hubby is snoring quite loudly tonight - so I'm spending the night on the couch again. I ordered him a mouth piece that is supposed to help stop snoring. Lets HOPE it works!

                night all.............

                • Checking out your link. I had heard of the plant, but had no idea it was actually used in cooking. There are a lot of plant names out there that have little to do with reality. Like all the plants called lilies that are not lilies at all: daylilies, calla lilies, peace lilies...

It will be interesting to see how your scale experiment works out. We're all hard-wired a bit differently, and this might end up being a liberation for you, or you might find out that the scale is an essential tool for you.

I don't bother weighing myself most of the time if I know the numbers have gone up. Like after this last weekend of feasting. I've got to take the weekend off before I can even think about seeing new territory. Oh well. Bit by bit, we will get there.

So now I will be looking forward to hearing your pants reports.

                    • Hi Tomi! I used to keep Hedera Ivy in my house too until one day it just dropped dead and was covered in spider webs. I googled it and learned that spider mites do not like high humidity, or showers... so you're supposed to put your plants in the shower periodically, turn the shower on and let it run. This will knock the spider mites off the leaves and flush them down the drain, plus it dusts the leaves quite nicely.

Additionally, during the summer months I would take my hederas outside and let them live in the humid air for a while. This seemed to really cut down on the spider mite takeovers. Sadly, when we moved into our new house, I didn't continue the procedures and have lost two hederas. I haven't attempted to bring any more in, even though they are absolutely beautiful. I did have some growing in a pot on my deck though with a mixture of other flowers. I'm pretty sure the cold go to them by now and they're done.

I hope the mouthguard works to keep hubby from snoring so badly. Brad's really toned it down lately, not sure what the deal is with that.

                      • The pants I will use as a guide to my progress are the next size down - size 12. I have 4 pairs - 2 new and 2 old from when I managed to take off 50 pounds 2 years ago doing a meal replacement diet. One pair is slightly smaller than the rest - so getting into THAT pair is my goal! right now - my size 14 Levi 529s are perfect when they come out of the dryer - and after wearing them about 4 times are baggy. When they are baggy straight from the dryer I will move down to the size 12s. Looking forward to that day! I decided that I can sorta cheat a little on the scale issue by checking at my moms house on the every other friday shopping trip. Next is scheduled for the 7th, but I'm going to try to move it to the 14th so I have valid excuse for missing the office christmas potluck. (I'm weird - I don't like socializing with the people I work with - I'd rather keep the relationships on a more professional level). So, that means I have 3 weeks before I can get an estimate on what I weigh. And I say estimate because my moms scales are the OLD dial kind - and must be at least 50 years old! But, she says they are still fairly accurate. You know - stuff made that long ago is better made than stuff made today! I would like to be into the 180s by the 14th. *crossingfingersandtoes*

So, in my late night lack of sleep I munched on some almond butter - quite a lot of almond butter. a total of 540 calories worth of almond butter. So I put that on todays calorie counts since techically is was today - it was 12:30 am. I haven't been the slightest bit hungry today - it is now 6:09 pm and I haven't had anything except 2 mugs of hot tea with stevia. So, ZERO calories since the almond butter binge. Hubby is just now driving in the driveway - so I will start dinner. Chicken with roasted veggies. His will be with teriyaki and rice - mine plain. Although his sounds much more fun! I LOVE teriyaki!

Hopefully I will be able to sleep a bit better tonight. If I can get hubby to stop snoring! I'm going to put a bunch of pillows on his side of the bed so he will sleep sitting more upright - maybe that will help.

My son is having car issues.......... its a constant thing! Nothing major, but all these little things that makes it necessary for him to take it to the mechanic. Rarely is the bill over $300 - but its several times a year. I've been trying to get him to take the thing and trade it off! He needs a reliable means of transportation - he drives 40 minutes both ways to work. He's got the money - he just doesn't want to buy anything until he gets a house and knows where his finances are going to be. I still haven't talked to him about being out on his own by April....... I need to run it by hubby first. He'll tell me to do what ever I think is best - but I still need to talk with him about it.

Yup - haven't, but thought about it the reason I thought it was broke was cuz something popped in one of the "feet". but - maybe I should see if its just the battery.............. and if it is............. I'm gonna feel pretty foolish!

                            • Doing good......... day 4 of my 14 day strict primal. I ate too many veggies over the past couple days though. My carbs are pushing 24% most days. I know that is still low - but not VERY LOW. At least I know I'm getting lots of good vitamins and minerals in all those veggies. Last night was Butternut Squash, Cauliflower, Carrots, and Brocolli - a LARGE portion! I'd guess about 4 cups! Roasted with light EVOO. YUM! The chicken was boring - but filling.

Tonight I'm making Salmon and acorn squash.

Just found out we're going to Seattle to BIL's for the weekend. He had a HUGE tree fall in his yard and we're going to help clean it up. Better take lots of junk clothes - its a fir tree and we will be covered in pitch!

I'm not going to work today Sent the boss a text to tell him I'm going MIA today.

So, right now I'm heading upstairs to take a nice "detox bath" as seen in Tasha's journal. then I'll run to the store and pick up some more veggies and a battery for my scales. This afternoon there is supposed to be a nice break in the rain between 1 and 3 so I will get in my walk at that time. Need to pay some bills...... clean house a bit.......... overall its going to be a layed back day. Tomorrow is my Friday OFF!!! I've already taken care of the laundry, the yardwork, the bills ('cept what hubby brings home tonight from the boatshop) and the shopping. I will also need to pack for the Seattle trip.

My son is looking at some more houses this weekend if his realtor is available. Hope he finds something.
