  • Reading through PaleoBird's thread now. I won't get it done before I leave work but it'll be interesting to see where it goes and what I can learn. I fully plan to go into a ketogenic state in the near future, for probably about 15 days or so to see if there's any change in my weight. But I have to prepare first and right now, my fridge is not ready for me to go ketogenic... too much stuff there to derail me... Getting the veggies right will be tough, but if I stick to green veggies, I should be ok as the green ones are lower in carbs. I question my discipline right now though...

I'm pretty interested in medical stuff, but I haven't done any reading on CP - maybe cuz I've never known anyone who had it.

My CP is caused by brain damage either in utero or at birth. My entire life I was told it was a birthing issue as I was extremely blue at birth. However, several years ago I had a complete neurological exam, including MRI and the doctor feels my damage likely happened in utero.

Life was very stressful for my mother while she was pregnant with me. My oldest sister contracted encephalitis about 3 years before I was born. She never recovered and was in a vegetative-like state until she died less than 2 months before I was born.

While my "symptoms", deemed spastic, appear to be mild, MRI revealed moderately severe brain damage. In essence I have a nice size hole in the right hemisphere of my brain.

All of that is to say, changes in my diet have no impact on my CP. Dietary changes have, however, greatly improved my severe osteoarthitis pain and swelling.

      • wow......... I don't even know how to respond to that. It seems you have dealt with it well and haven't let it totally control your life. You must have got your strength from your mom -- it sounds like she had an aweful lot to deal with in her younger years!

Life is what it is, huh? We don't have control over the cards we're dealt. I believe God intended for us all to be perfect in every way - but, freewill got in the way of that. So instead - He can use anything for His good if we allow him to. We live in a fallen world - and part of that is physical imperfection. Birth defects, illness, aging........... all of it. I'm heaven bound and reaching for it everyday!

I'm happy to hear the dietary changes have improved your quality of life also.

        • good day so far..... I walked 1.5 miles this morning - but now my legs are a bit achy and tired. Maybe I pushed it too much on the speed side. Tomorrow I will take more of a stroll than a power walk! I had 2 eggs for breakfast, fried in butter - and 1 ounce of cinnamon coated almonds just a bit ago. I'm waiting for hubby to get home to start dinner. It will likely be a late dinner since its the friday before a holiday weekend - I'm sure there have been several last minute panics from people saying -- I just got my boat out for the weekend and it isn't running!!! Well, dumb ass - next time try taking it out a few weeks early so my husband can get home at a decent hour! Sorry......... I get testy when other peoples lack of common sense cuts into OUR holiday weekends! (I hope none of our customers are reading this!)

Anyway......... dinner will be some kind of stirfry with chicken and shrimp. I'm making rice for hubby but I'll have mine in lettuce wraps. (make that 2 oz of almonds...... I'm getting pretty hungry, since I haven't eaten in 10 hours.)

Throwing out the lactaid was certainly the right thing to do to get me stop eating my homemade icecream - or store bought for that matter. If its available I can't turn it down. But I can't eat it now! Good for me!

Not sure what this weekend is bringing yet.......... Sunday family gathering and curry feast. Hubby wants me to make butter chicken -- but I can't eat it cuz of the cream in it. I'm sure there will be other curries there I can eat. I'm babbling........ signing off.

          • Tomi,
I hope you and hubby have a great holiday. My DH was off Thursday (I worked) and Friday (we ran errands together). He works this weekend. He does get Thanksgiving off this year, though........ We've gotten used to not having holidays off together. Christmas was the worst when the kids were little and I worked so many Thanksgivings (so I could have Christmas off) that the kids thought everyone had pizza for Thanksgiving Thursday and turkey on Friday afterwards.

            • Well, I am chiming in late, but one of my favorite meatball formulas is 1/2 ground pork + 1/2 ground beef, plus a whack of spices. Mix well, roll into little 1" balls. Simmer in boiling water for ten minutes. Serve on wooden skewers with a sauce that complements whatever spices you used. (Guacamole and salsa if you used cumin and chili, for example.) My kids even like these cold in their school lunches(I'm sure being on a stick helps- everything tastes better on a stick!)

Our Costco has started selling coconut oil, so you might check there if you have any in your area.

                • @ Sabine. The meatballs turned out good - I did use 1/2 beef 1/2 pork, then added Italian spice, salt and pepper, garlic, onion, red and green peppers, eggs, almond meal, beef broth - and topped them with tomato paste mixed with BBQ sauce. I put a bit too much Italian spice - but they were still good. We still have some left over! I think that will be dinner tonight.

Okay last night I made the best meal I think I ever made!!!! I took chicken breast and sliced it thin for stir fry, cooked until almost done then added shrimp. When the juices cooked down I put in some Guy Fieri Pacific Rim sauce (yes - mostly sugar but excellent flavor). Then I made a chutney with cucumbers, onions, cilantro and mango, with salt and pepper. I put the meat in lettuce topped with the chutney and rolled them up!!! YUMMMY......... hubby and I raved that this was as good as ANY meal we've had in a restaurant! I was licking my fingers!!! It was excellent!

But alas....... back up to 187 again today. Up and down - Up and down!!!! GRRR. I need to see 185 on the scale so I know I'm making some progress. I shouldn't complain cuz last week I was bouncing around 191. So........in reality there is progress - not just steady downward progress. I had too much protein and not enough fat yesterday. If I had not eaten the almonds I would have been good on the protein, but that would have also dropped my fat and overall calories! Sheesh -- this is harder than I thought it would be. I'll try again today.

I'm going walking - then I'll have breakfast. There are LOTS of walkers bikers and joggers out this morning!

                  • Not feeling so good......... for the passed 2 nights I've been suffering with a night-time stomach ache and feelings of nausea. Makes it hard to sleep when you're not sure if you're going to vomit or not. Today I had a couple eggs at around noon and a couple hours later I was in the bathroom......... with a REALLY bad stomach ache --- doing what you do in the bathroom when you have a REALLY bad stomach ache....... and I almost vomitted too! UGH! Now I'm really nauseous! Its 6 pm and all I've eated today are those 2 eggs. Hubby just fixed me a nice hot cup of chicken broth. I don't know......... tummy bug? Hope it passes quickly.

                          • thanks everyone. Still sick. Constant belly ache and frequent trips to the bathroom. UGH....... its going to be a chicken broth day I guess. I won't be going to the family lunch either......... bummer. On the up side - I'm back down to 186 again. @Jenn --- I sure hope this isn't the same 2 week bug that your friend has.......... I don't want to miss 2 weeks of work. But hey if I can only take in broth for 2 weeks I should lose a few pounds!

                            • Yup, probably wise just to give your stomach a rest. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the kind words, Tomi. Yoyoing is something that has always frustrated me, so I tend to stick to decisions once I've made them. Second-guessing myself constantly is just too tiring.

Why don't you just make your butter chicken with bacon fat or coconut oil? Or is there cream or something in there? I've never made it. And start making your own sauces with no sugar or some stevia instead of store-bought ones? Use a little arrowroot powder or tapioca starch to thicken them, and you'll have something healthier AND more delicious. Trust me, there's something about having something totally delicious and knowing that it's good for you at the same time that makes it taste twice as good.
