Fibromyalgia and Fat - Tomi's story

  • Yay for empty nests! At least when we've watched our chicks fledge out and they're ready to take flight. I'm looking forward to my summer alone with hubs.

    Tomi, I have very mixed feelings about moving. I want to be with my husband, but it will mean leaving everything else that means home behind: my kids, grandkids, my country and culture, French in the stores, the church where I have been happy for a dozen years. I've been down with my husband often enough to know his colleagues well, and have some real friends among them, so that will help. And if I can get involved with his students in some way, that would be really neat. I love young adults, loved teaching them when I was still working. It's a Christian college, so they wouldn't think it weird if made myself available in some kind of mentoring context, formal or informal. So it would be a relatively happy exile, but it would be an exile.
    5'2", 55 years, Primal since April. Pre-Primal weight loss, from 216.6 to 157.8
    Primal low: 140.2 (Dec. 3) Goal weight: 135?
    Main Primal goal: beating back my CFS enough to function more normally and start writing again

        Yes, they are wonderful when they are little, but when they turn 26 you will be ready for them to fly the coop! Trust me!

          So much of life is a trade off isn't it? In order to have "this" you must forego "that". Being with your husband will mean enormous loss, and enormous gain. I am sorry you will have to let go of so many things in order to gain so many. And purhaps from this side of things it appears you have to give up more than you would gain. Lifes transitions are never easy, seldom painless, and always stressful. But, very often they are the right thing and the best thing when we use our 20/20 hindsight sense. I will pray for an easy transition for you.

          • Didn't make it to work today. My stomach finally settled down around 1:30. I sent an email to my doc and asked her about taking Colestid for my cholesterol, since it is also used to treat bile salts diarrhea. A win/win if it does its job! Hopefully she will just write me a script and send it to the pharmacy. I won't see her again until June 7, as that is the earliest she had a morning appointment available. She will email the results of my blood work, but the saliva test might have to wait until I am in her office. I'm not sure....... I'm feeling pretty sluggish today. So knowing those results is heavy on my mind. I will so disappointed if all the trouble yeilds no answers. The bruise from the poorly skilled phlebotomist is beginning to fade. It ended up about the size of an egg! ouchy!

            The scales were on the low side this morning! I always love seeing a smaller number - even if it is only a fraction smaller. Hopefully this will be my new "constant" and I will never see those bigger numbers again. I can tell I'm starting to lose muscle in my legs from not walking because my pants feel tighter - grr!!! I was planning to get up and walk this morning - but the stomach issues required me to be close to the bathroom. Maybe tomorrow.......... umph!

              LOL! It is absolutely the truth. Although none of mine made it to 26. Close enough.

              • Tuesday - May 15. today is the boss's birthday - office lunch. I'm taking salad. Better get moving cuz I need to go buy some stuff on the way in. Not in a very good mood for office socializing. Oh well, we do what we must at times.

                Tummy is feeling okay so far - hope it stays this way, I'm hopeful! Still no reply from the doc about the colestid.

                I really messed up yesterday. Putting it on here so I'm accountable. First I had iced cream - I LOVE ice cream! It was Tillamock vanilla - healthy-ish compared to some of the cheap junk - but still, it had corn syrup in it. Then last night, rum and diet coke. 2 poisons! Pretty much blew it! Total calories - 2002. About 48% fat. I'm having a really hard time wrapping my brain around this theory that eating a diet high in healthy fats will teach my body that fat is fuel, so when I eat less calories than my body needs it will turn to its own fat stores for fuel. I don't know............ I'm wondering if it works that way for everyone. I wonder what would happen if I focused on eating healthy, but watched the fat a little more. Like, not having bacon and eggs for breakfast every day. Maybe only on the weekends? Maybe I should focus more on healthy, and low fat.

                Any suggestions out there?

                • I think as long as you keep the sugar content of your diet low, the body won't have the glycogen to rely on, which is the point in eating the more meat, fewer starches kind of thing. not everyone can do high fat. But, at the very least, you need to reduce the amount of glycogen available in your body to flip the switch to burn fat over sugar. Sugar is easy to access and readily available. Fat takes more energy to convert to energy when it's been stored on the body... however... dietary fat can be transformed into glycogen in the liver and used by the body. That is where the low carb, high fat thing comes from... I know I'm leaving out some vitally important details there, but this is why the Carbohydrate Curve works... Lower carbs = less glycogen. Glycogen must then be produced from dietary fat, or coverted to ketones from the adipose fat stored on the body.

                  I don't know what going low carb and low fat would do... but I imagine you'd have to eat a lot of chicken and egg whites to get your protein goals for the day... and Mark doesn't like egg whites... lol

                    • I'm sure you're right. I'm not going to change anything....... just wondering about it all. I will feel better when I get my blood and saliva tests back and talk to the doctor. I need to stay on course - and stay honest about what I'm putting in my mouth. I understand the glycogen thing - if there is no sugar then the body has no choice but to go for the fat stores. Its just so opposite of all the CW training we've been through since the 1950's. Its hard to shake that mentality when its all you've known for 50 years! Anyone else tripping up on that stuff?

                      I can easily go with the low carb - high protein part - but the fat is my stumbling block. Course it hasn't stopped me from enjoying my daily breakfast of eggs and bacon! Its just when I see the amount of fat I'm eating when I track everything I start to question whether I'm doing the right thing or not.

                      So at the moment - I'm feasting on 3 perfected fried (in butter and olive oil) beautiful Kokani! There is nothing better than fresh caught fish! Thank you neighbor Gary! YOU ROCK! He brings us kokani whenever he goes fishing - all fileted and ready to cook! And since my hubby has to work late tonight - I get them ALL to myself! YUMMY! For those of you wondering - Kokani is a land locked salmon - and its like eating silk. SOOOO GOOOOOOD! They aren't very big - about 8-10 inches, about the size of a trout. Just a sprinkling of garlic salt is all you need! I'm thoroughly enjoying this meal. I had a salad at the office lunch - so dinner is nothing but kokani!

                      • Well, you know, there are a lot of settings on the dial between 1 and 10. You could perhaps try reducing the fats a wee bit and see if that helps. I do seem to recall "fats in moderation" somewhere in The Primal Blueprint. And I'm willing to believe we have to do a little experimenting to find where "moderation" is for our own bodies. WE need enough to feel satisfied, so we don't binge, but not so much that we're gaining. Tinkering is the name of the game. I'm still figuring it out for myself. I had a good handle on it with my old style of eating, but the rules have changed, so I need to learn it again. I know I get better results regardless if I'm faithful with my walks.

                        • You have a great neighbor if he'll catch fish for you! Fish is like gold in our neck of the woods. If you catch it, you DO NOT give it away! lol But we eat catfish, not salmon... probably because there is no salmon swimming around in our rivers... lol

                              Oh........ how sad is that!!!! You have my deepest condolences! Is salmon a west coast thing? Salmon is sooooo goooood!!!! But catfish can be really good too if cooked right.

                              This summer my husband and I are going to start fishing. We bought new poles, now we need some tackle and a license! FISH ON!!!!!!

                              • I've never had bad catfish... lol I use a bit of Chef Paul's seafood seasoning, saute it in butter til the edges are cooked and then flop it onto a baking sheet (lined with parchment paper) and toss it in the oven until done. I'm crediting Primal Cajun with this recipe even though I don't think it's exactly the way she makes it. It's fantastic!

                                I've never had salmon. We have salmon steaks on display at the meat counter but I've never had it and I'm apprehensive about buying it (expensive) and screwing it up.
