  • It was fun because we actually agreed on a dress for a change! We were hoping she'd be able to wear it to her orchestra competition, but because it comes just over her knees, she can't. Oh well, we tried with that. The dress looks good and so grown up. I can't believe my 12 year old is so close to being a teen!

Poor kid, today wasn't that great for her. For the first time, she got picked on because of our last name. I grew up with that, so I'm pretty much immune to the taunts. Not to mention, we do have a pretty awesome name to be proud of. Of course, the worse part of her day was that she fell, which she seems to be prone to do since she's a bit of a daredevil. This kid, she's not going to have much of a tailbone left at the rate she's going at. So, by the time I picked her up, it wasn't a good day for her.

I did manage to get in some cave time while she was at her Youth Group tonight. It was much needed and I had a chance to talk to my brother. I love talking to him when it comes to stuff like this with Gabi. She got a little family and Italian history lesson on the drive home from group

    Yesterday
    B: 2 pcs bacon
S: Strawberries and 1 oz pistachios and one small avocado
L: Leftover chicken piccata and squash. Salad and dressing.
    S: More pistachios
D: Lemon Pepper chicken: Zested two big lemons and mixed that up with pepper, salt, dill, and garlic. Coated three tilapia fillets and let sit to soak in. Cooked it up in bacon grease from the morning. Then I steamed up some squash.
S: 10 or 12 homemade almond crackers with butter. I did have two little rice crispie treats drizzled with chocolate. Oops!
    Drinks: Water
Exercise: 10 Min Trainer Yoga Flex and Abs

    Today
    B: 2 slices of bacon
S: Strawberries, 1 small avocado, 6 almond crackers and some butter
L: Mom's chili and about two cups of broccoli with butter
S: Theo Organic Fair Trade 70% Dark Chocolate Mint bar. Yeah, I ate the whole thing. I need to eat these slower. It does have regular sugar in it, but it's also soy free! Okay, I can't really rationalize this, b.u.t. I wanted mint so badly that I was willing to cave.
D: I had dinner late, but it was about 2 oz of leftover fish.
    Drinks: Water
Exercise: 10 min trainer Cardio and Abs. Plus a walk down Old Soncy Trail. I'll map it here in a minute to get my distance, but it wasn't far. I didn't have alot of time, or at least I thought I didn't.

    • Okay, so I love sharing pics of birds I've worked on. Two of them are from when I was stationed in Korea, the Apache shot is from when I was in the back 40 at Fort Campbell. I miss that camera! Maybe next time I go to Virginia Beach, I'll have a whole day to go through my mom's storage unit and find more pictures. I have so many from Korea!

      • Yay! I got to take the morning off so I can go watch Gabi's 6th grade orchestra partake in Amarillo's Greater Southwest Music Festival. Fasting through breakfast this morning, so I guess I won't be breaking my fast until later Time to take more pictures! I'm still trying to get a picture of this bird that likes to hang on my back porch....

        • I'm assuming the bird on your back porch is a different species than the ones in your recent photos...

I hear you on the Italian last name. My kids got a lot of that, especially when we lived in an area with no other Italians. My oldest wished he could change his name, because he got too much attention with his weird name. And the second one looked at him in astonishment and said, "What, that BOTHERS you?" He kind of liked standing out... Just goes to show, we're all wired differently.

It's time to get ready for some volleyball and bbq. Hopefully the bbq will include plenty of non bread stuff and such so I can scarf down some grub!

            • Ok, I realized something else about people not following PB lifestyle. They don't bring much fresh fruit or veggies to a bbq. Been guilty of this in the past. So, next time someone says I don't need to worry about bringing anything, I'll bring something to make sure I have what I need. However, it was a good time with good friends We didn't play volleyball for long because about 4 of us out of the 15 could actually play. Downer for me cause I was looking forward to playing for a couple of hours! So, they played nuckem instead.

Gabi's concert went pretty good considering this is only their second year of playing. Hmmm, I think too much stress is being put on these kids to learn an instrument faster and be ready to compete. Bad idea. At least it is to me. I played from 5th grade all the way to 12th. We didn't really even have seating assignments until I hit Jr. High. The kids started competing for chairs their first year. I told her that the first two years need to be spent learning good form and how to read the music. I'm ranting, but the teacher she had last year didn't really spend enough time on it. Blech, enough of the rant. She's doing choir next year, so hopefully this will be much easier on her as she doesn't have to worry about the above stuff, just reading notes.I try not to worry about it and stay out of the teacher's way because I'll over parent in this area if given any room whatsoever. Then, the relationship between Gabi and I will just go down hill. So, it's best for me to just back off.

I did manage to skip out on breakfast, but I think I made up for it at tonight's cookout! Oops. Someone made a semi-seven layer dip without the beans. I thought I was good to go until I realized that they basically used premixed dips and piled them up. Sort of didn't notice that until it was too late. I was all excited cause I saw guacamole and tomatoes! In my head, I did a little happy dance too! Yay, stuff I can eat other than the brats! Yes, yes I caved to the corn chips. I could have said no, b.u.t. I rationalized it was okay to use them for the dip. No, I had no almond crackers at home to bring this time

              Today
L: 2 qtr lb grass fed burgers, an entire package of asparagus roasted in the oven
S: about 2 handfuls of walnuts. Edit! Almost forgot, 1 fireball. Although, I only had part of it. Had to run outside to fuel a bird and didn't want that in my mouth out on the flight line! Not supposed to have it out there anyway.
D: 1 brat, two regular dogs. The dip with probably about 15 corn tortilla chips and a couple handfuls of taco seasoned doritos, one banana. It was hard to turn down the ice cream and whip cream cause I wanted some, but I knew I had to say no. I did have two cherries from the jar.
Drinks: Lots of water, it was hot outside on the flightline today! 1 cup sweetened Iced tea and one cup unsweetened.
Exercise: 10 Min Trainer Total Body and Lower Body. Extremely short game of vb, followed by nukem. Then threw the nerf ball around after eating.

While I might have ranted a bit earlier, it was actually a pretty good day. Plenty of walking around, mostly because of work. I think I need to invest in a fishing pole. Saw plenty of fish biting right around sundown at Medipark Lake. I wanted to catch one so bad!

              • I grew up in a school where we competed for chairs as well. I thought it was extremely beneficial. It's an incentive to work harder, push for better embrasure and tighten up your breathing. I loved it! I think competition is healthy for kids. It forces them to set a benchmark and makes them want to achieve more. No different than us setting weight goals- how can you know how far to go if you haven't mapped the distance? I'm actually headed back to my highschool tomorrow for a "band" practice. My old music teacher is retiring in a couple weeks and they're gathering students past and present to play a piece he arranged 20 some odd years ago. i haven't picked up a barrie sax in 5 years but I'm expected to hold that section on my own. Fun! We'll see how it goes...

Short Term Goal: Fit into the shirts I got on my honeymoon at disney and universal in august next year when I go back to for my 1 year anniversary

                • The competition benefited me once I had been playing for a few years. I just think it's too much during the first two years. Especially when the kids aren't really being taught good form holding the instrument or the bow. For most of their first year, they were plucking. Completely backwards from how I learned, bow first. She actually struggled with bowing at the beginning of this year because of that. I tried to teach her better technique, but as my one friend told me, she's probably not going to want to listen to me.

                  • Ecks, it's Mr. Holland's Opus all over again! How cool is that? And do rent the movie if you've never seen it. It's a classic, and deserves it.

Alessandra, it really is tricky with kids isn't it? But you'd be amazed how much they actually listen and emulate while hiding it well. I don't know your daughter, but maybe a comment like "If you ever want to learn a little more than your teacher is showing you, I can show you an easier way" and then you back off and let her choose if and when.

                    • I've tried all sorts of ways. I'm just not good with teaching her. She's more type A than I am. I don't mind taking the time to learn stuff, she wants to get it right away and gets frustrated when she doesn't. This was evident from early on with her when she rode her bike with the training wheels. Oh, that was a mess to watch. No mom, I'm going to do this myself. She got so mad at her bike when it wouldn't turn the way she wanted. I tried to calmly step in a help her out. Oh, that just made it worse, lol. She didn't give up though. The stringed instrument isn't her thing. She's lost interest and I can tell she has. If this was something she wanted to do, it would be all I'd ever hear out of her.

Sigh, stressful day at work and not a good ending to it. I'm not looking forward to Monday. Man, I don't want to get so ticked sometimes, but it's like some people just keep wanting to push certain buttons. The only thing is, it's not just me that they do it to. I just don't react to it as well as others do. I REALLY need some serious cave time and then some time with my small group people right now.

                        • Gabi managed to get me to laugh so hard that I almost peed my pants last night. I know, TMI, but that kid is a trip. She took a dare a little further than she was supposed to. Hopefully Texas Roadhouse will let us in again. Our poor waiter, I think I should have left him a bigger tip!

So, pretty much every time we go out to eat, I get good service from my waiter. In turn I leave a little thank you note on the back side of the receipt. Yes, I still tip. I just thought one day that it would be nice to do that, so I've been doing it ever since. Anyway, I let Gabi write the note last night. Phew, we REALLY need to work on her spelling capabilities, but that's beside the point. She signed with both our names and then in paranthesis wrote (call me) under my name! She put the paper down on the table and told me not to read it. Of course I did and scratched that out and wrote: That was my kids doing. My mistake was leaving the pen on the table. As soon as she grabbed it, I grabbed the receipt and we had a mini spat over the pen. Then the waiter showed up and I folded and handed him the paper and told him to take it and not let her have it. We left in a hurry! So, just as I'm about to get in my truck, he comes out and says "Thank you lady!"

My kid is trying to push me into cougar status, permanently! Little chit. I still love her. Then she tried to get me to drink all of her frapp last night. I ordered one for her with the intention of taking a few sips. I did, but she kept trying to get me to drink the whole thing.

This morning, I got a pleasant wake up text from my brother, who lives in Round Rock with his family. It was a youtube video of someone showing off their De Tomaso Pantera while playing Metallica in the background. Sigh, I love my brother! He didn't even know I had a crappy workday yesterday either.

                          • LOL! Your daughter sounds like a hoot! One of my sons is like that. We were out for my birthday one time (he was about 12, 13) and he kept harassing the waiter. "I'm going to have to report you to the Department of Health. My mother's linguini is full of dead clams." That kind of thing. It was a party-style restaurant where they normally pie the birthday girl/boy, but in the case of older people they check to see if it's OK first. I didn't want to be pied. So the waiters came a sang their birthday song to me, then whipped out a pie plate of whipped cream and planted it in my son's face. The rest of us laughed so hard we almost fell off our seats. He took it really well, to his credit. Ah, memories.

                            • Today, I plan on making the best of my day. I need to clean my place because I slacked off last Saturday. I plan on IF'ing today, and getting some walking in today, if not maybe bike ride on Gabi's bike since I still have no wheels on mine. Once I get my watch/heart rate moniter/step counter (it's been named Beep Beep and I will refer to her as such in the future) figured out again, I'll slap it on my wrist and try to keep track for fun.

Gabi's friend's formal birthday party thing is tonight and I've got game night with two combined small groups while she's out. I look forward to spending time with these people and making some new friends.

I think I might even have time for meditation today for a while. I need it so bad right now. I've got to make the best of my space and time this weekend. Next weekend is camping trip at Palo Duro Canyon!

L: BAS with OO and BV
S: About 4 handfuls of chopped walnuts and a smidge of doughnut coconut topping.
D: Lettuce Salad with ceasar dressing and parm cheese (my fave!) About 2/3 rull slab of ribs from Texas Roadhouse. Gabi chickened out on hers last night. I bought a full slab for us to split. She ate about half of hers. However, she stayed away from the bread and too many peanuts cause she wanted to make room for the ribs.
Dessert?: Probably about 5 or 6 sips of the frapp. P.S. Their chocolate whipped cream is no match for the stuff I used to make. Yeap, I've made homemade whipped cream in all sorts of flavors

Drinks: Mostly water, but had Iced Tea with dinner last night. T.R. doesn't have stevia sweetener, so I cheated and split a pink sweetener pac between two big glasses.

                              • It's official, Primal is definitely taking over my lifestyle. I decided to walk to Natural Grocers this morning. It's just a little under a mile, or something of that sort. So, I see this brand new orange Camero driving around in the dealership by my place and don't think anything of it. Then I'm about to pass the gas station and the Camero drives up and one of the guys from my small group is driving it! I didn't know he worked there. So we chat for a minute and he offers me a ride, but I told him no cause I wanted to walk. Then he offered to let me drive it..... I told him I needed the walk. Oh my goodness, you have NO idea how much self control that took because I really like fast cars, like alot. Sigh, I walked on.
