    • Such an interesting trip, Candy! I remember feeling much the same way many years ago when we stayed overnight with friends of my hosts in Yugoslavia. They were not poverty-stricken, like the people you are describing, but the women (these were Serbs) served the guests and the men without sitting down to eat themselves, were bare-foot, wore headkerchiefs... I felt horrified to be sitting when they could not. And what a culture shock it was for me. I was not out of my teens yet, and this was all such a new experience for me.

Congratulations on managing to eat so well in a foreign environment.

Tomi, get thee to Canada! Seriously! It's practically in your backyard. It will be a very gentle introduction to a foreign country, in that there is no language barrier, and the cultural differences are relatively small. You might encounter a bit of anti-American snobbery, but most people will be gracious. If you don't encounter any obnoxious jerks, all of them will be.

      • Candy, sounds like a lovely trip! I think it is so good for us to be reminded of how wealthy we actually are. South Africa has a lot of incredibly poor people and it is very sobering to see how some people have to live. It is SOOOO good for us to travel outside of our home country - I think everybody should do it at least a few times in their lives. The most value comes from living in another country for an extended period of time though (IMHO) as you suddenly realise that all the things you thought were 'normal' and good manners etc are really just a cultural norm and have to get thrown right out of the door and you have to adjust your perceptions of others on a whole new paradigm. (hope that makes sense!)

It sounds as though you are in a very comfortable place with the primal lifestyle and what works for you Candy! Wonderful! And I bet you will be able to address those last few kgs and send them on their way before too long.

        • Popping in to say Hi Girls! Another busy week, but so much to be grateful for . My website is finally up and running (just need to add more products - if you want to have a look: Candy's Wonderland dutch only though!); I messed up completely on Sunday evening and had to start all over again, but now it looks even better. I received and delivered my first official order: 40 "Wonderbars" for our CrossFit gym. They're like protein bars but made from 100% natural ingredients and with no added sweetener, I did add pure whey isolate to it to up the protein, as requested by the gym members . I make them in 2 flavors: gingerbread and coffee-brownie. I worked all Friday (until almost midnight) to make the packaging and delivered them on Sunday morning. Going to the gym tonight and I'm really curious to see if they're selling!
Yesterday I received my first order from someone I don't know in real life! She started following my facebook page and twitter account as from the start and was the first to place an order since I've gone officially "live" .

This is me on Friday evening making the packaging for the Wonderbars:

My 2 oldest boys are having exams this week and next week. So I'm working from home until the end of the year (actually until next Wednesday, after that I'm on holiday ). I'm thankful for that too, as it's cold outside and I don't have to get in my cold car in the mess we call traffic early in the morning.

OK, back to work now! Have a nice week!

          • Ah, btw, I was being bloated and had gas every evening and I have found the culprit: my magnesium supplements . I tried taking the supplement at different times of the day, and yes, within 30 minutes of taking them my belly was bloating and I started passing lots of (smelly) gas. I stopped taking the supplements 2 days ago and didn't have any bloating since.
Hmm, no more magnesium supplements for me I guess. Will have to see how I can get enough of it just with the foods I eat. The problem is that when I don't take magnesium I start having (more) cramps in my feet and toes after a few days .

            • Do you ever do epsom salt baths? Maybe getting it dermally wouldn't have the same bloating effect.

I love those type of 'pop' boxes. Good choice.

              • Mark also discusses other ways of getting magnesium through the skin. Although Epsom salt baths are nice and easy and pleasant all on their own.

Hand-made packaging. Oh my. That looks like something you could hire your boys to do when you have more orders. Congratulations on the great start to your business. I hope it goes so well, you have to contract out the packaging and hire a cook or two.

                • Nice job on the staying primal! Thats something to be proud of - even if it is second nature now. when we travel this main thing on my hubby's mind is sampling the local food. He's a true lover of spiciness and full flavor! We haven't traveled much this year, just a trip to Vegas for business, so I haven't had to deal with it too much.

I'm so excited for your new business venture! How are you marketing and selling the products?

                  • @Sabine: yes, I just ordered a few kg of epsom salt, but have to be careful with it. I usually take a bath every weekend (and showers in between) with my husband and turns out he's quite sensible to it! After taking a thermal bath in Hungary (very high in magnesium) he's been on the toilet half a day, poor guy!

@Tomi: I have a facebook page and I'm mostly selling to members of my CrossFit gym up till now; but this week I received 2 orders from people I don't know personally! One is for cakes (blueberry-buttermilkcake and brownies for a future dietitian!); and one order is for 50 Wonderbars by the owner of another CrossFit gym (about 2 hours drive from our place). Obviously all CrossFit owners/coaches talk to each other and see each other on events and trainings . So I guess most of my marketing is word of mouth.

                      • True!
My youngest son's school (well, all 3 sons went there, youngest is the only one there now for another year) is making a nice brochure to distribute in our town and they were selling publicity spaces in the brochure. I bought the smallest space (68 x 90 mm or 2.67 x 3.54 inch) and pay 170 euro (+/- 225 USD) for it! But I'm looking forward to see my logo in that brochure (it'll be distributed at the end of January).

                        • [ranting mode ON]
OMG, there's an article in a newspaper today (a rather "decent" newspaper, if such thing exists) heading:"'Dishes made by Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson more unhealthy than processed microwave meals' *toink*!
An English professor specialised in public health has compared the recipes from the cookbooks of these cooks, made from fresh produce and real butter with processed microwave meals; and although the processed meals cannot be called healthy, he says the "real homemade" meals are MORE UNHEALTHY because they have MORE protein and saturated fat and LESS fiber. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! The article continues to say that also the recipes of a locally famous TV-cook in Belgium have the same problem. Because his recipes were examined...pay attention now....by communicationspecialsts of a Belgian university. Communication.specialist. Since when do they know ANYTHING about healthy food?
*running around screaming*. I've been ranting all over facebook and twitter and now posted links to both Sugar: the bitter truth and The Skinny on Obesity . Mannnn, how is this possible??? Why do they insist butter is BAD, even WORSE than transfat and sugar put together?????
[rant OFF] (me hopes, this is bad for my heart....I think I should go bake some eggs in butter and top them with fleur de sel de guérande, that would send any doctor in a rant ).
