  • When it comes to hormones, averages don't mean much. It's so highly individual. Some women get hyper-fertile as soon as they drop the birth control, others can go a long time before their fertility returns.

    I got pregnant while nursing my first-born, without having had a period. When hormone levels change, each body reacts differently. Some women have periods with no ovulation: I had the opposite. Same thing with menopause; anything can happen.

    Which is a long-winded way of saying there's just no telling how your body will react. It won't necessarily have anything to do with averages. You can look it up anyway, to have a rough idea, but there is no normal. Or rather, there are many, many normals.

    Anyway, glad your morale has lifted. If your husband's attitude continues to be a concern, try to find some time when you are very calm and relatively happy to discuss it with him. And it is nice to see that he makes a visible effort to do better. If you let him know that you see that, and appreciate it, it will make the discussion that much easier. If you give him the impression that you trust him to want to make things work, let him know what you really need to see from him, and what you yourself are working on from your side, you are putting all the chances on your side to have a productive conversation on this.

      Day 3 with no sugar and VLC is coming to a close. Doing well. Except craving juice... I'll have to look up again how people are taking the l-glutamine. I believe she took it 1.5 hours after a meal and 2 hours before a meal, which won't work at this point b/c I'm about to heat up dinner (gluten free spaghetti for the kids, spaghetti squash for me - just realized that's a really high carb meal, but I think I'll still be able to stay under 50 mg).

      I can tell I'm in ketosis b/c I'm starting to have lexapro withdrawal zaps again after having been zap free for about 2 weeks. Zaps are dumb.

      Ankle is feeling better. No sugar seems to have made a significant difference in how it feels. No pain, just stiffness/tightness like the connective tissues need stretched. Dr. Lake did a good number on things today and I fully expect it to start feeling better soon.

      Brad is complaining that he is up something like 7 lbs so he's going to cut his starchy carbs out. I think that'll help him a lot. He asked me to pick him up some green tree extract b/c he read it can help with weight loss. I told him the "help" is minimal but it provides many other benefits (according to a blog post from Mark) so I'll get it for him. Most of the assistance it seems to offer is inflammatory assistance, which could release some water for him.

      I know a lot of his "attitude" is depression and I'm trying to be patient about it, but sometimes it's really a giant drag for the rest of us. He's only taking 10 mg of Zoloft. I think that might need to be increased until his body starts to heal itself a bit more. And he's going to need to really clean up his diet as well.

      Anyhow, time to make dinner. Night all.

      • Low carb rocks! 187.6 today!! New low. Let's hope it sticks!!!

        I can tell I'm living in KetosisLand b/c I'm zapping again. Those fat cells are bursting and releasing those toxins from those daggum antidepressants.

        I'm reading Primal Body Primal Mind. She's quickly convincing me that the food industry is full of liars and cheats and bastards who are killing us slowly... only problem is that she's also giving me this sense of doom - like there are so many things wrong with my body now as a result of living the SAD lifestyle that I'm going to be repairing for 100 years and I better never consume a single molecule or gluten again or I'll have to start all over. How is that any way to live? I don't mean to say that I plan to bring gluten into my life as a staple - absolutely not - but how can you possibly avoid EVERY SINGLE molecule of gluten? She says that a single molecule of gluten can cause damage that takes 6 months to repair... If this is true for everyone, we're all screwed and will NEVER get back to optimal health b/c there will ALWAYS be gluten available to contaminate our foods. Unless we raise our own meats, our own veggies, and never ever ever EVER buy anything in a store again. The information she's providing is compelling and very interesting and backed up with references in nearly every paragraph, but I feel like she's a little too pessimistic about the body's ability to heal itself and is a bit over the edge with how horrible life will be if we don't avoid gluten 100% of the time. I get it... it's bad for me, whether allergic or not, and I may be allergic and not know it... but, I don't think it's as horrible as she passes on. It's almost like "EAT THIS AND DIE TOMORROW" is the message she's putting out there and I don't think that's reality. I'm only through Chapter 5, so maybe it gets less negative as we go and more optimistic.

        Don't get me wrong, it's a good read and full of very good information... but I think she's a little over the top with the OMG IT'S GOING TO KILL US attitude. None of the other authors I have read have had this same stance of the deadly nature of gluten, so it's almost like she loses a bit of credibility b/c of her tone. Idk... I need to keep reading.

        However, the food industry is jank and needs a complete overhaul.

        • Fiber Menace made me feel that way too. I'm hoping that if I get my digestion issues back on track and they're regular for a while, an occasional trip off the wagon with some Vitamin C and probiotics to help recover will not destroy me for life. But that is still several months away for me, at this point. Christmas is going to be rough, there will be a lot of cookie-things that I want to eat. I may have to splurge a little to make some gluten-free baked goods for myself.

          I think the book sounds very paranoid. Avoiding every single molecule of gluten sounds easy to me, if you can afford good quality meats. Eat fruit, veggies, meat. Voila. No gluten. The only conflict comes from sharing food with other people, or introducing foods that are "iffy" (packaged foods of any kind, basically). So...maybe not realistic for some people, but definitely doable with some vigilance. Maybe she is using the strict approach as a kind of gimmick, to scare people into compliance? That's kind of odd.

            The chapter about digestion was interesting but gave me a sense of hopelessness b/c there is so much that goes into it and so many things to consider when making sure everything is right that I got overwhelmed. She talked about hydrochloric acid production and that people who suffer from reflux don't produce enough so the pyloric valve won't open to allow the partially digested food to pass into the intestine. Of course, the stomach knows it's supposed to be gone and starts to reflux it to get it out of there b/c the longer it sits, the more it ferments and the more problems are caused. So people get acid indigestion or heartburn or acid reflux and start popping Tums and Prilosecs and the problem persists b/c the problem wasn't too much acid, but rather not enough acid in the first place. That's the shortened version...

            She goes on to talk about the pancreas and all that too. It was a very interesting read to learn how it's all tied together, but it also made me feel overwhelmed b/c it's like how do I know if there's a problem? I don't suffer from reflux or heartburn, so I assume all is well with my acid production, but the tone of importance, utter doom that could occur if not tended to, made me feel super overwhelmed and scared. I don't like that. I hope she tones it down in later chapters.

            And you're right... as long as you eat whole fresh foods only, you should be fine, but the problem comes with sharing food with people or eating in a shared kitchen or anything else like that. If you're a hermit in your own home, grow only your own foods and never consume anything from outside your home, you should be fine...

            • The chapter on soy was great and I wanted to paste the WHOLE thing to Facebook... Not sure if I can do that from my Kindle or not... I'm sure it's got some kind of size restriction. It made me feel bad for my nephew b/c he was fed soy formula as an infant. Pretty sure my neice was too. That chapter convinced me that no matter how you slice it, soy is BAD!! I had already thought that, thanks to Mark Sisson and his awesome book, but now I'm completely convinced...

              I've also reached a point where I'm done advocating, I think. June68 talked about this in her journal the other day. You want to yell it from the rooftops that this works so well, but it's so frustrating when people are unreceptive to the idea. So to eliminate the frustrating, I'll probably stop advocating. I'll post what I'm doing on Facebook, how things are going, etc, but when a friend complains about this ailment or that ailment, I'll just zip my lips and let them be. I did however, suggest to a friend today that she consider a Paleo approach to eating to ease her body pain. She's got one doctor that says she's go fibro but two others who say no, but they don't know what it is, and everyone just keeps pushing drugs at her. I told her I had two friend who eliminated their needs for medication by adopting paleo. We'll see if she's interested in more info or not. Probably not... but she seems utterly disgusted by doctors and their lack of fixing problems and instead covering them up with pain meds. So, maybe??

              I did however, get another family started in the transition toward Paleo. My friend Carrie said the other day that she took the plunge because of my posts about the foods and how good I feel, etc, and went grocery shopping. She said she didn't buy a single processed food and was shocked that it wasn't more expensive. I love getting posts like that!

              • I hear you about advocating. Just best to drop the information like you did about knowing someone who eliminated this problem by doing X. If they're open, they'll ask questions. And it might take time. I thought the first person who talked to me about this was insane. But the fact that his mother and sister felt so much better after ditching grains really stuck in my head, and made me a little more open the next time I heard about it. I am not the kind of person who changes my mind easily, and I hate flip-flopping back and forth. But I am open to evidence, which I consider slowly and if I change, I don't particularly want to change back again quickly. You have to be patient with people like me. A little positive input now and again without any pressure is what works best.

                The book you're reading does sound a little over the top. I'd be a bit skeptical. I somehow sincerely doubt that it's anywhere near that bad. I rather prefer Mark's joyful approach.

                • I've gotten to the point now where I read books for information, not the messages intended by the writer. Like with It Starts with Food. I knew they were trying to sell the Whole30 to me. Anyone can see that reading the book. I simply chose to ignore those plugs and read the book for the information it contained. Primal Body Primal Mind is a bit harder to do this with b/c her message is making me angry with the food industry and more so the "personal care" industry. Did you know they put gluten in body wash and shampoo??? Yeah. Definitely going to be checking my bottles for things like "Vegetable protein". Same with foods. Companies are disguising gluten by giving it names like Vegetable proteins and other words that I can't remember at this time. It's in the book at home - in fact... hold on, I think I shared that snippet on Facebook. Hold please... Yep, here it is:

                  "Gluten can be listed as vegetable protein, seitan, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, modified food starch, and other names. Gluten is additionally hidden on food labels as other food starches, artificial food coloring, food stabilizers, malt extract (syrup or flavoring), dextrins, and food emulsifiers."

                  Did you know that MSG is disguised by being called "natural flavors"? and MSG is a byproduct of soy processing? Didn't know this either. This book has a TON of information that the general public would never know and it makes me so angry to know that the food industry has been fooling us like this. This explains why the author says she will not buy a processed product unless it's expressly says "gluten free" or "soy free" or other such things like that.

                  She also goes into GMOs. It's a great book for information, like I said, if you can get past her anger and over-the-top doom and gloom. But then again, maybe she's right?? I was skeptical of Mark too until I saw the writing on the wall with my own results. I mean, effortless weight loss? Boundless energy? Seriously? Give me a break... except I did what he said and it came true... so maybe she's not so far out there and I'm just taken aback by her approach... either way, I'll keep reading.

                  • Brad and I are going mattress shopping tonight. About 6 years ago, we bought a Sterns and Foster mattress. We were completely duped and upsold the whole way through and managed to spend $2300 on a mattress, box spring, frame and mattress pad. It was a pillow top and an awesome mattress. It didn't last very long... we were glad it had a 10 year warranty b/c about a year or two into owning it, there were definite indentations where Brad and I slept. So we filed a claim. The store agreed to let us exchange it. So, for an additional $100 we got a tempurpedic b/c they didn't have a similar model in the bed we were exchanging. 4 years later and this mattress ALSO has indentations where we sleep. It's so bad that Brad feels like he's sleeping on boards b/c the memory foam isn't supporting him anymore (could be his weight, but we'll not discuss that right now). So, I called the store. 20 year warranty on the bed is getting used... but we have to deal with the manufacturer. They're being really good about it. Our current model has been discontinued but there are 3 models we can choose from without paying any additional money for an upgrade. We would like to try them out before we tell Tempurpedic which model we want, so we're going to the store that sold us the TP bed to try them out tonight.

                    Then Brad wants to go to dinner. He wanted pizza... um, I'm low carb and GF remember? We could get GF pizza, but the place that has it is expensive... so we're going to Buffalo Wild Wings instead... not primal, but I can remain VLC by getting traditional wings. I'm thinking 24 traditional wings is in my future b/c I will be avoiding the taters... which is a bummer b/c their wedges are delish!

                    • My boyfriend's bed got the warranty voided when he got sick on it Otherwise I would totally file a claim because the middle dips! It's also a pillow-top. I hate it and can't wait to get a different one.

                      • Pillow tops are a mistake. We got one for our son, and it wasn't long before it was bulging and shifting. Buy the memory foam separately if you want it, then it can be replaced without having to buy a new mattress. Personally, I figure it must be horrifically hot to sleep on, and nothing disturbs my sleep more than being overheated. With the possible exception of snoring... LOL!

                        • It is warmer than most beds, but it doesn't bother me much. Newer memory foam beds have cooling chambers in them to help alleviate the heat they capture.

                          Most mattress companies won't take a mattress back that's got a stain on it - for hygiene reasons. Sterns and Foster told me it's because they recycle the recyclable pieces and stains make them non-recyclable. Plus, for the crews that work on the mattresses (haul away, tear apart, etc) it's kind of gross to wonder what that mystery stain is...

                          my dog laid on our S&F mattress when I was washing sheets. He drooled or something in his sleep b/c he left a water stain. I swear mattresses are designed to capture water stains and immediately turn them yellow. I had to use peroxide to get the stain out so that S&F would warrant our mattress.

                          • OMG I totally did not expect traditional wings to be worth 1000 calories for only 12 of them! WHAT THE HELL DO THEY DO TO THEM??? Wings without sauce, 12 of them, is 900 calories... omg, maybe I need to find something else to eat - like ribs or something. Surely they don't deep fat fry the ribs...

                            Ok, I think I have a plan...

                            12 naked traditional wings, medium sauce on the side. Side salad with ranch on the side. Comes to a grand total of 1136 calories (EGADS!), 18 carbs (SCORE!!), 77 gm fat and 78 gm protein.

                            It appears all "sugars" come from veggies. Total for the day is 18 gm. Who woulda thought there'd be sugar in 3 over hard eggs cooked in bacon grease, when there's no sugar in the bacon grease used... hmmm... interesting. Also carbs in eggs... know that? I'm only 277 calories over my overall calorie goal for the day and I stayed at 45 gm of carbs for the day, so I won't leave ketosis... thankfully. That's why I chose BWW in the first place so that I wouldn't break my ketosis with pizza crust, GF or not.

                            Anyhow, I guess the day isn't a total loss, just some crappy oils that will make my hip hurt and stiffen my joints come tomorrow morning.

                            It feels WAY later than 3 pm... Hurry up 4:30... *sigh*

                            • RE: beds.

                              Seriously, skip right past the pillowtops and memory foam, and go right for a high quality firm bed. We finally (third bed in 12 years) got a Simmons Posterpedic, in the extra firm. Individual pocketed coils. At my husband's highest weight, as well as now that he's lost a bunch, it's still very supportive. Memory foam (and any other deeply foamed beds) don't actually support, so the muscles get fatigued trying to keep the spine in a neutral place.

                              Remember, Grok slept on the ground/rocks/maybe in a tree... not really on a squishy surface. I find that sleeping on squish just hurts after awhile.

                              • I never do count the carbs in eggs or seafood (and no, not even that fake crab[because I don't eat that!]). I just can't take half a gram of carb, when it comes wrapped in a hunk of protein and fat, that seriously. But I know some people are more careful.
