    Thanks for the link, I've been meaning to look into that for a while.

    For a while last year I'd just do 5 pullups every time I walk under the bar I've got up in the hall way, or go and do 5 during every other advert break when I was watching tv in the evenings. The were both good ways of building the volume of pull ups each day which helped for sure.

      Maybe. Sometimes instead of using a muffin tray I just fill a big oven proof bowl with the egg, bacon & veggie mix and cook it like that. It's like a crustless quiche. Cooking it in an oven obviously cooks it from all around and browns the top, whereas on a stove top you just get the heat from underneath.
      Could you put the mixture in a smaller vessel inside a large pot with a lid to contain the heat like a makeshift oven?.

          Progress on the PLP workout: Up to 30 of each exercise yesterday.
          Pull ups: 16 before falling off the bar (which is a slip backwards) but the subsequent pull ups were done in larger sets than previously. Still I'm thinking I might start breaking them down into sets now, so I'll do as many as I can before failing then move onto the squats/lunges/jumps.

          Picked up 2 kilo's of solid beef fat from my butcher a coupla weeks ago and finally got around to rendering it this week.
          Here's how it went down:


          Take beef fat (this is about a kilo) and chop into small cubes (you could mince it, but then you'll miss out on the crackling fun...).


          Place diced fat into a pot and set on a low heat (a slow cooker would also be good for this, though you probably wouldn't want to leave it unattended in the latter stages).


          After a 30 mins to an hour it'll look something like this. The fat has changed a little in colour and texture, turning gelatinous and liquid fat and water has been released from the cubes into the pan. This bubbles and will spit if the heat is too high due to the water burning off. Drop the heat to a gentle bubble but not spitting.

          Stir now and again in the first hour or so until the liquid covers all of the cubes.


          Another hour or two down the track you'll notice the cubes start turn golden and puffy / crispy.


          When most pieces are a nice golden brown and crispy in texture you're done. Place a metal sieve over another pan (some people line this with kitchen paper towels for further filtration) and pour the lot through it. What you'll be left with is something like this.

            Tip the crispy bits into a large bowl and sprinkle with salt, pepper or other spices to your taste and shake the bowl to get an even coverage.
            ***Warning: At this stage everything is damn hot, so don't splash yourself with the liquid or try popping the crackling straight in your mouth***

            After a couple of hours sitting on the bench top the tallow looked like this. I'll add another pic of the cooled and solidified end product tonight.
            It's been sitting in the fridge since last night.

            If you haven't tried making your own lard or tallow yet, I highly recommend it. It tastes so much better than the shop bought stuff that is available even here in NZ, and has a much softer texture even out of the fridge. It's really easy to make as long as you remember that you're working with a super hot liquid, think of it as edible napalm and you should be safe

              You know you're primal when the fatty chunks left over from rendering look TASTY!
              I have some lovely white tallow that I rendered off of grass fed heart, but it's just sitting in the fridge. I did mine in the oven which was nice because you can just ignore it for a few hours =)

                Never tried it in the oven.. might give it a go next time

                I'm thinking I didn't leave it long enough this time, as half the crackling chunks were still a little soft inside. Not so nice as the crunchy ones.

                  Have taken a couple of rest days from the PLP workout today as my elbows and knees are feeling it.
                  Mostly my elbow tendons though.

                  Got up to 33 reps in one set of each the day before yesterday, rested yesterday and probably will today.
                  Tomorrow I'll get back into it but break it down into sets and see how that goes.

                  Once I've fixed the brakes on my car and planted a couple of fruit trees I've bought I'll try and fit in a sprint session

                    Well, fixing my brakes took longer than I was hoping and then I had to make an emergency trip to collect fresh seawater for my aquarium to do a mass water change in an effort to save our ribbon eel, which was struggling to breath and behaving erratic. It was a long shot as the water parameters were all good anyway, and sadly he had died by the time we got home. A very sad day for my DH as he has essentially hand reared Udon the eel for the past couple of years. It's amazing how attached you get to these little critters

                    After Udon's burial I took a walk to buy a lottery ticket and on the way home stopped off at a kids playground to mess around on the monkey bars. My elbows weren't sore anymore, so I thought I'd have a go at a muscle up. I haven't tried in probably a year or more, as my bar at home is only a few inches from the ceiling. Grabbed hold of the bar, remembering to use the false grip and pulled, thinking I'd go for one arm first then get the other up. Wow, I couldn't believe it, I literally flew over the literally bar! First attempt and hit my first muscle up, totally surprised myself.
                    Tried again and couldn't even come close, only managed to eek out 3 pull Ups. Rested for a minute or two and tried again, bang, another one
                    Managed 4 in the end, with a few pull ups and a break in between each one. Totally stoked!

                    First goal of the year achieved, roll on the human flag.

                      Wow, it's been ages since I last updated here!

                      I'm still plodding along, the the past few months have been pretty stressful.
                      First I've been involved in a major project at work since late last year, which has finally finished.
                      Secondly i got approached to work for a major company here, so the stress of making the decision to even contemplate leaving the place I've worked for almost a decade, follows by the whole interview and selection process.
                      Then during the final stages of that I had to fly half way round the world to attend a family funeral.

                      The trip was very emotional but the travel was a killer! 2 long-haul flights back to back, with only a coupla hours break between them at both ends of the trip :-(

                      Coming back to NZ was hideous due to a combination of getting very little sleep on the planes, catching a stinking cold, major jet lag all week and having to come back to my old job for my last week there.

                      All in all a pretty tough few weeks.

                      At least I've got a week off next week for some R&R befor starting my new job.
                      Made some poor food choices while back in the UK and paid the price. Experienced my first bought of IBS symtoms since going paleo. This was mainly due to to eating too many foods containing wheat, some by stealth and others that were obvious and which as occasional treats are fine, but as they were more frequent it meant that my old trigger foods were causing me issues again
                      But also I think that the amount of vegetable oil that found its way into my diet also made itself felt by way of a general sluggishness of my digestive system. Again, not that I consumed a lot just that going from none to being tricked into eating fake butter for a few days by a well meaning friend (don't ask) and a few restaurant meals which I'm sure veggie oil had been used for cooking.
                      Happy to say that within almost a week of getting home I'm over the food issues and airplane bloat, and have also dropped the few pounds I had put on. Now just need to shake this sodding cold/chest infection and get back to training.

                        Muffins???? Please do give us the recipe for a muffin that contains no starch or sugar. These look super yummy. Although there's no way I could do daily the calories you are doing. But I am occasionally missing that "starch-looking" thing. Not much, not enough to go way off track. But these things look so yummy....

                          Sorry, the only muffins I make are the egg and veggie ones shown earlier in the thread.
                          Don't know how you could make real muffins without flour of some sort, rice or nut, but both would be carb heavy, so it would depend on your goals I guess.

                          I've made a nice banana bread with almond flour in the past that would make good muffins, but not something that you'd want to eat regularly.

                          Breakfast this morning; delicious New Zealand lamb and veggies, topped off with a nice free range egg.

                            Brekkie was so good yesterday that I had the same for lunch :-)

                            Family dinner party last night, lots of curries and rice. We took a couple of beer can chickens, one cooked with chipotle seasoning and the other with an Indian spice mix.

                            Did treat myself to some desert though, fried banana and ice cream, and a little suji cake.

                            Brekkie today was leftover chicken and cauliflower, yellow bell pepper and mushrooms sauted in butter, topped off with a few slices of avocado. Not as colourful as yesterday, but just as tasty :-)

                              So 9 days into my 100 push up / 50 pull up challenge (I.e. working up to knocking out 100 in one hit) and here are the numbers so far:

                              Max push ups: 45 (up 10 on 9 days ago)
                              Max pull ups: 16 (up 6 on a week ago)

                              Chuffed :-)

                              Obviously, if you read through the rest of this journal you'll know that I've pushed my pull ups higher in the past, but I've let them slide in the past 6 months or so.

                              I've been using the 100 push up workout ( one hundred push ups ) app on my iPhone for both, just halving the numbers of exercises for the pull-ups.
                              Doing the workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so far have done 483 push-ups and roughly half the number of pull-ups, as I've been rounding down to a whole number for pull-ups :-)

                              Also working on front levers on a couple of other days a week.

                                Misabi, that is impressive !!!!! I have just printed the 100 pressup info, so am thinking about starting that challenge soon?......
