    Groktimus Primal's - What's for dinner?

I've been reading the Vegetarian Myth and The Omnivore's Dilemma and it sure is depressing to think about the food we eat. I believe it's healthier to eat as an omnivore since that's what nature definitely intended. I don't think a reasonably argument could be made to the contrary.

When one stops and thinks about it obviously eating meat is a waste of energy because the grains that fed the cattle could feed many more people than the eventually slaughtered cow could. Unfortunately living off of grains is unhealthy and also quite unsustainable. After all, growing massive fields of GMO mono crops destroys the land and the ecosystem that was on and around it. The massive crops are also powered by fossil fuels and we know that will create problems down the road.

Life cannot continue without death and the only real answer long term would be to vastly cut our population and go back to our hunter gatherer ways or at least sustainable farming practices. The truth is we have way overshot what the planet can support long term so we are damned no matter what in the long run. Plants need animals and animals need plants. Nature can be beautiful but at times it is quite ugly and necessarily so.

I guess the best we can hope for is that a few humans will be left alive to start over after world war 3 or some other apocalypse. We are probably too far down the rabbit hole to turn around even if there was enough consensus. I guess I will just maintain the selfish hope that I will be long dead before the major shit hits the fan.

Maybe like the Lost in Space movie we can colonize another planet before this one withers and dies!

      Groktimus Primal's - Modern Stress

The wonders of never ending modern day stress. It doesn't outright kill you at least not quickly but the paperwork necessary just to stay on top of my life which is intentionally kept simple makes it so much more miserable than it needs to be. It's not very fulfilling to push around papers while being nickled and dimed just to live. Just stop and think about every little piece of paper you need to push around whether at work or home just to keep so few balls in the air and it quickly becomes ridiculous if not overwhelming. Now it's tax time on top of it all! I suppose it's better than more direct primal threats but it just doesn't end.

Groktimus Primal's - Grass Fed Meat and Ron Jeremy

I finally had the opportunity to sample non-dehydrated grass fed meat. Target actually carries some now. I tried a grass fed burger side by side with an industrial burger and I must say I was impressed by the burger but depressed by the price. How could we ever let this whole industrial thing get so far out of hand? Immediate gratification certainly trumped long term common sense that's for sure.

It's hard to describe how the grass fed burger tasted. I will simply say it had a full bodied flavor that left the conventional burger tasting like it had a nutritional hole in the middle. As healthful as it may be I'm afraid it must remain a treat. Our food system has made sure that it costs a ridiculous amount of money to abandon the military-industrial complex that supports and pumps out our questionable food like a scary Willy Wonka assembly line.

On different note, Ron Jeremy the mega porn star has been admitted to the hospital for an aneurysm near his heart. The man is a legend and even has his own line of rum. Apparently he didn't get the memo that porn stars are suppose to die young of an STD. Let's hope he has a long hard life!

Well a bug finally got me. I had to call out from work last Friday and I can't even remember the last time I was out due to illness. While there was plenty of vomiting it was the feeling of almost passing out that scared me. I have never really experienced this before. I seem to have recovered so I will wait and see what the future holds. I'd like to think my clean living helped me through but I'm not so sure.

I use a Fitbit and my phone is not supported for syncing nor do I have my PC at work setup for syncing but yet I often discover it as synced while at work. It seems the world is so wired now that after coming into contact with enough people you can accidentally sync through someone else's device without even knowing it!

              Groktimus Primal's - Beets

It's hard to beat fresh beets. Although they are a somewhat carb laden root vegetable I have always loved beets. My family had a couple of large gardens but we never grew beets and we all liked the canned version. It wasn't until adulthood that I finally got to taste some fresh grade "A" beets cooked properly. I must say that while there is some resemblance between fresh and canned, the canned are only good because the fresh are awesome! If you are going to splurge on some carbs certainly vegetables are the way to do it. With all that natural coloring you know the damn things must be good for you!

Groktimus Primal's - Time to retreat to the cave

Massachusetts is expecting one hell of a storm tomorrow so after I make my way home from work I suspect I will be sitting in the cold, dark house for some time. The small town I live in barely has electricity under ideal conditions. Many times even a stiff breeze seems to knock out the power. We have NSTAR electric on speed dial, not that it does much good. I'll be Grokin' out to the storm and bad utility service

                  Groktimus Primal's - Horse Meat

More horse meat has been found in U.K. meat products. In packaged lasagna (instead of burgers) this time. It appears that not only is regulation needed but more importantly as Joel Salatin would say you should buy local and know your farmer. We can't trust these huge profit driven Big Agra companies with our lives because they just don't care about anything or anyone other than profit. It's just plain ridiculous and brings up the question of what else are they doing? I the horse meat even sanitary? Will we get "mad horse disease" or invent it? These companies don't have enough skin in the game to care. Sure they don't want to get caught but you know they will just experience a short lived dip in business and pay a big one time fine and transfer a few executives around. Six months later it will be business as usual and they'll maybe change the product label or the company name and find a new way to pick our pockets and poison us.

I ordered a couple of "In Grok We Trust" key-chains and let me tell you they are sweet. They are like well made brass medals and very well done. There aren't many companies I trust enough to enjoy seeing them go more commercial but Primal Nutrition is one of them. As long as Mark doesn't lose sight of what's important I hope he does well financially. I like the Grok character and the whole solidarity thing is cool but for me it must be done low key. I don't ever envision myself in toe shoes but I can handle a key-chain

Groktimus Primal's - Time to focus

Now that the great blizzard of 13 is over it's time to regroup and attack. My weight has crept up a bit this week. Fortunately I think most, if not all of it is due to constipation and larger portions of permitted foods. When the power is out you tend to think a little constipation is better than having to use a toilet that you may not be able to flush! Also since I never varied from my permitted foods I stayed in Ketosis most of the time so I suspect the weight is not permanent and of course it's hard to experience much real change in one week anyway.

Never the less I don't like it and I make no excuses. It's time to watch my food quantity as well as quality, get back into my minor exercise routine that I neglected (although snow shoveling is more exercise than I normally get anyway) and get my "regularity" back in the bathroom department

With the stress and odd sleep patterns one has to deal with during a semi-crisis it should be a relative breeze. I like nothing more than my normal boring routine. In many ways it actually sustains me mentally as well.

Groktimus Primal's - Deep Nutrition Review

Sooner or later you have to get around to reading the book Deep Nutrition. Although I haven't finished it yet I can say it is a must read. The author makes some compelling arguments that epigenetics are incredibly powerful and lead to more permanent changes to DNA than simply lucky/unlucky mutations do. The scary thing is we can actually "insult" our genes and pass the bastardized versions onto our kids. The most hopeful thing is that they are fairly fluid and can be corrected somewhat by clean living.

Groktimus Primal's - Quality is job none

It occurs to me after breaking yet another ice scraper during the snow storm that nothing is made with quality anymore. I searched for a heavy duty one and could not find one at any price. Aside from being a frustrating waste of money and resources I think that the most damaging aspect of our disposal world might just be how it effects out psyche. Almost everything is like that now. In a world where no one cares about anything except money (rather than their fellow man or at least craftsmanship) leaves us all lacking. It's hard to achieve greatest when we barely strive for mediocrity! Perhaps it at least leaves room for a few to shine.

Groktimus Primal's - Who to trust?

I was just thinking, who can we really trust? Certainly not the food industry or the government which is clearly in their pocket. Not that I don't put a lot of trust in Mark or Robb Wolf but most self help types are clearly out to earn a living first and foremost and who can really blame them? I guess charity starts at home and we all need to kowtow to the system somewhat. Much of the natural state of man seems to be greedy and selfish, after all the whole "me first thing" is much of how we survive.

So then it occurred to me that the only thing you can really trust is your own genetics which are also pretty greedy and selfish but they are so on your behalf and they have no ulterior motive. As Mark would say it's about figuring out what inputs they expect (and don't "want") without getting mislead that will truly make you all you can be. History, science and experimentation are our tools but they must be used with a very critical eye! I know this thought is not original and it pretty well defines the whole Primal theme but I thinks it's one of those simple truths Mark often points out that never gets directly thought about.
