  • Oh- in other news- I'm an SP-. In other words, at the low end of "strong performer" or the middle half of the associates. Well, that's not within the firing range, so I'll keep it. Oh, and I show up on time! I realize my shift starts before his, but it's not that hard to figure out that I log in 5-10 minutes late consistantly in the morning. Considering they track coverage in 15-minute increments- that makes me late. But- whatever. Y'all selectively enforce rules, I will selectively follow them.

Oh- and I'm eating a $10 salad from Whole Foods for lunch. Very healthy. I almost put chicken on it- but if you ever want to eat conventional chicken again- do not read the chicken chapter in Eating Animals. Hurk. Stuck with eggs and cheese.

What if I read it to you? And insist that you keep your eyes focused on me the entire time . . .

Or- well, have you ever seen Tom Cats?

Hmm, I might have to go shopping. I prefer black. They don't stain like white . . . anything does in my possession.

How much damned stamina do you imagine me to have? I'd need some mixture of Viagra and meth to get through all of that! How about a volume of Neruda that can be flung aside quickly, as needed?

              • Sorry, FW, one of my friends has me reading a B&D erotic romance so I might be thinking slightly more sadistically than normal

Hmm, I really am going to have to go shopping . . . Although I see those as going better with my floral midaeval bodice than my brown plaid librarian skirt. One must put together costumes correctly, after all.

Haven't read the book (won't), but generally know the drift from other reading. One of the reasons why I rarely eat chicken any more. And the price for pastured chicken >>> the industrial crap. If I'm spending that kind of money, I'm getting beef or lamb or pork.

I did buy a whole bird and was contemplating what to do with it. Turns out I'll be cooking for my MiL for Mother's Day. Doing a Southern cooking theme (fried chicken, greens) but not wholly Primal (mac and cheese, cake). I'm going to try to replicate my grandmother's fried chicken recipe, which was amazing. Used Rice Krispies (yeah, I know... but I'll be frying the chickie in pure, beautiful LARD!). My addition: a buttermilk soak overnight with some seasoning.

                    • That actually sounds really good, FW. Let me know how it turns out. I can handle rice fairly well. I haven't checked, but there shouldn't be too much else in Rice Krispies. Shouldn't. Not isn't. How sad is that?

I'm really mostly a beef girl anyway, but I do like my chicken broth. It just means that if I want good chicken I need to get a chicken share and *sigh* actually eat the whole thing before I can simmer it down. Speaking of- I need to make more broth of all sorts. Hmm. And do something with the wild duck and goose in my freezer. *sigh*

                      • Yeah, I figure the Krispies should be a fairly innocuous kind of cheat. Not so the cake and macs. I suppose the birdies will eat the leftover Rice Krispies if I put it out for them?

Chicken broth is good. The whole broth thing is pretty easy, just time-consuming.

Haven't tried making either duck or goose, but I imagine they'd be easy to do... just bake them off or something... Wild is better. Duck, goose, librarian.

                        • i like to cook a whole chicken and then use it as a protein supplement. not enough protein in your eggs? add chicken! your BAS just wasn't filling enough? add chicken? want something to eat with homemade mayo? add chicken! i love chicken salad- mayo and chicken of course, plus some chopped celery and onions, and quartered grapes.

                          • That's actually a good idea, Saoirse. Just cook, strip, and add as needed. I'll have to check into the chicken-share they had at the farmers market last year. As long as it's less than a chicken a week (one a month would be more than enough) it might be worth it.

FW- well, removing plumage is an important step whether you're discussing fowl or librarians . . . They're wild ones that I was given and plucked over the winter. I'm actually thinking of just stuffing them in the crockpot and going from there. Less thinking that way, and I'm pretty sure that can't go badly. (famous last words)

                            • Only thing about the crock pot is, won't your fowl be kind of soggy?

In the oven, you can get a nice crispness to the skin. Plus, you can collect the rendered fat, save it, and use it for cooking.

I suppose you could cook a duck in a crock pot and I could bake one in the oven, and then we could show each other pictures of our birds...

                              • The drawback to wild is less fat to cook off- although that did occur to me. We'll see how inspired I'm feeling when I finally get around to them. If I still had my charcoal grill the answer would be easy. Chuck anything on that thing and it's good. But I don't

You promise to show me yours if I show you mine? You're not just teasing me?
