  • Canio and Naiad- thank you for your wisdom. I'll be on the alert for that. And TONS of people still knit. Even socks, although I am sometimes kindly informed that you can buy them at Wal-Mart, for a dollar. Sigh.

    I have even seen...Panda socks!

    • A similar pair to these happen to be a personal favorite of mine (purchased elsewhere cheaper!).

      • My mom knits a lot of socks. I used to wear them with birkenstocks and shorts to be funny, but then I realized that people just thought I dressed like that. This was before hipsters made clothing into irony so nobody got it. Maybe *I* was a proto-hipster!

Now I don't wear socks unless it's winter and I have to. But I do like wearing my handknit socks around the house. They are stripy and fun and it apparently entertains my mom to knit them so I will happily accept them and even solicit them for my husband (and child once her feet are large enough to make knitting them non-aggravating and not growing so damned fast.)

You just have to find someone capable of knitting them for you because it's only a link to the pattern and yarn.
              I haven't found a person yet or I would have a pair.

I know a few people but I doubt they'd be willing to actually put the time in.

                • If you can find a crochet pattern for 'em, I'll make 'em. My right hand is too stupid for me to knit.

                  • My mom COULD make those socks but the chances of her actually doing so would be about zero. She has, like, NO respect for my English degree. LOL.

Or the button-down with the wool sweater over it (with or without tie), or by itself unbuttoned a little at the neck with the sleeves rolled. It's definitely grownup man style, very classic.

I think men look good in that really classic style--I see too many guys dressing like teenage boys into their 30s and 40s, with all the stupid big logos and such, and it looks ridiculous, or they wear sloppy stuff that doesn't fit right. I don't think they all need to be fashion plates, but a lot of that old-school stuff has been around for a long time because, well, it looks good.
*sigh* I might be the only woman who's heart goes a little pitty-pat at the sight of carhartts. But for dressing up, you're right, classic is usually the way to go.

Ooh, I'll have to take a closer look for the pattern. I just started making hats, and socks will be on the list. I think I might know what my sister will be getting for Christmas . . . next year. I'll send the practice pair to you, Cori

VERY cool on the sail boat adventures!

And... did you know... Carhartt actually makes "dress-up" clothes.
That heavy brown cotton duck fabric into a jacket and flat cap.
I've seen some of the "tougher" types... big burly man welding trade dudes and stuff... wearing it with jeans and boots, and making it look pretty good before. LOL

And yes to socks! Practice socks too... imperfections among friends make them special.

The Carhartts look much better at the beginning of the day than at the end. However, the good thing about them at the end of the workday is that he's eager to get out of them.
