Hurray ! We have yet another evangelist preaching the WORD. From this tiny little iodine group BIG THINGS are growing.

This type of thing is more than a bit wonky... it's down right scary. Cultish.
As is the dismissal of anyone who brings up any of the studies that have shown possible problems with the high doses of iodine.

I take a small dose if iodine myself... because I have no other source of it in my diet as I cannot consume salt, and haven't consumed iodized salt at home in YEARS anyway. When I could salt I ate some iodized salt from packaged foods I'm sure.
And I do believe that some amount is good in the diet... thus the reason for iodized salt.

    • Oh, cori, absolutely, it's essential to have some iodine in the diet for health. Like many things, the dose is important, and too much is as bad as too little. I just worry that people are getting the idea that if some iodine is good, more is even better, and that worries me.

Placebo effects aren't just people thinking they feel better--the power of placebo seems to actually be able to improve real physical health markers, and it's not entirely clear why (and I actually attribute *some* of the improvements people get from switching to primal to a similar effect).
Have you read The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton PhD? The burgeoning field of epigenetics provides an interesting perspective into how our beliefs can have a measureable effect on our physiology.

I haven't, but I have a couple of friends who are geneticists, and we've had some really fascinating conversations about epigenetics. Very interesting stuff.

            • I am taking iodine myself, after years of running scared of it because of my thyroid. I'm not taking much, but as little salt as I eat and my insatiable desire for seafood and iodine rich food convinced I need some. So I switched multis to one that had it in it. Did it work? I'd like to think it did, but I don't have nonanecdotal evidence for you, aside from some sleep logs indicating I'm sleeping less but doing better. (I went from still being exhausted after 12 hrs of sleep to being downright perky after 8 hrs.)
I am my own experiment. I accept nothing as a panacea; nothing is the next miracle cure and whatever it is more likely to be snake oil. If there is some form of true evidence (not anecdotes, not doctor's approval, but something from the scientific community), and it appears to be positive, I might give it a shot. Have I crashed and burned? I refer you to my whole30 experiment on that one. Have I found a miracle cure? Nope. Closest I've come is supplementing selenium, iodine, and vitamin D in the doses MY body needs. Those who say that this snake oil/ supplement/ medicine/ diet/ exercise/ group/ whatthehellever is what will cure you of anything, everything, and make you Hans Solo handsome or Princess Leia pretty to boot are smoking snake oiled crack and drinking the crackool aid.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, steak in one hand, chocolate in the other, yelling "Holy F***, What a Ride!"

                      • If I may join, hi everyone! I've spent the last couple of months reading this journal (mostly at work, hangs head in shame), it's been a hilarious ride. Panda I love your writing style. Glad to finally be up to where everyone else is rather than feeling like a weirdo lurker. Don't know how much I have to contribute, my boobies are not worth photographing, iodine hasn't fixed all my problems (however vitamin D has done wonders for clearing fogginess and lethargy!). My cat does have a benign poltergeist, it resides in his litter box and utters awful things whilst he does his business, causing him to run around the house once vacating the litter box, in his younger years it would tell him to pounce on us in the middle of the night to wake us up, but I think he's ignoring that nightly dare nowadays instead opting for sleeping on my arm whilst I sleep.

                        • Welcome to the Forest, Aussie!

My cat has a benign poltergeist too. Apparently it runs between my legs while I'm walking through the house in the morning and she's hell bent on catching it b/c she nearly trips me at least 8 times each morning.
