  • Zach's Primal Journal

I've been on and off with eating Primal for a couple years now...and it is about time I took it more seriously! I am hoping that by holding myself accountable I'll take this more seriously.

I started lifting weights nearly 8 years ago (I'll be 23 in August), and I became seriously invested in bodybuilding throughout college. I recently had brain surgery (Nov 2010) and lost about 25 lbs -- muscle and fat. That loss crushed me, but I got back up and started building exercising as much as possible. I couldn't lift anything over 30lbs for 6 months, so I got into military workouts.

I've gained a lot of muscle back since my surgery, and now I am training mixed martial arts 4-5 days a week. I was doing a 5x5 strength training program, but I was so set on getting in military shape I dropped the weight training and just focused on running and bodyweight workouts.

I'm not sure the military is my true calling, but I am keeping that option open. Now I am working at Anheuser-Busch as an intern in the Brewing Tech Center -- I'm a chemist.

I'm more interested in getting back into hiking, rock climbing, and other fun outdoor activites! Plus, I want to adopt the Primal lifestyle and follow this eating plan more strictly.

Now you have some backstory...so let the journal begin

Welcome and good luck. You can do it.
    Ancestral Health Info

I design websites and blogs for a living. If you would like a blog or website designed by someone who understands Primal, see my web page.

Primal Blueprint Explorer My blog for people who are not into the Grok thing. Since starting the blog, I have moved close to being Archevore instead of Primal. But Mark's Daily Apple is still the best source of information about living an ancestral lifestyle.

I haven't been eating much lately, and it is taking a toll on my training. I am experimenting with eating more food throughout the day and gauging how I feel during MMA training.

      Meal #1 (6:30am)
Omelet (3 eggs, 4 slices low-sodium bacon, very small amount of cheddar cheese)

      Meal #2 (11:30am)
Crock Pot Stuffed Peppers -- got this recipe from MDA

      Meal #3 (2:00pm)
Sludge (Peanut butter, protein powder, and blueberries mixed together with a little water -- looks gross, tastes amazing)

      Meal #4 (4:45pm)
Banana, protein shake, handfull of almonds

      Meal #5 (8:45pm)
Grilled chicken salad (spinach, chicken, grape tomatoes, walnuts)
      Small grapefruit

I didn't have much time to workout before my Jiu-Jitsu class, but I did 5x5 of bench press and bent-over rows then cycled for 10 minutes. Jiu-Jitsu class is brutal! We do a 15 min cardio warm-up, then we drill a couple movements, and then we do FIVE 5 minute rounds of sparing.

I did fell more energetic last night from eating closer to training time. I'll see how I feel again tonight and the rest of the week!

            Meal #1 (7:00am)
            Grilled chicken salad
            Grapefruit (small)

            Meal #2 (10:30am)
            Sludge

            Meal #3 (12:30pm)
            Stuffed peppers
            Grapes

            Meal #4 (4:30pm)
            Banana, protein shake, almonds

            Meal #5 (9:30pm)
A couple beers and half of a frozen pizza

My last meal of the day (after MMA) was definitely not primal haha. I need to avoid drinking because I ALWAYS get cravings for junk food -- or lose my discipline anyway. I did good when I went to the grocery store with my roommate and didn't get anything, but when he put the pizza in the oven, I caved!

I did Jiu-Jitsu last night and nothing more. I would like to start doing a few more classes again. I was doing MMA class, jiu-jitsu, and boxing/kickboxing 4-5 days a week for the first month, but I was also on an E/C stack. I constitute my unreal levels of energy to that stack...which I presume is extremely unhealthy.

I feel back to normal now that I'm not drinking caffeine and eating much cleaner. I'm going to post up a "before" photo so I can mark my current progress. I'll measure my body fat too and seeing that # should be a big motivator!

I am a habitual eater, but I am going to focus on expanding my arsenal of recipes on weekends when I have more free time. I literally work all day, train MMA for a couple hours, then go home and eat, play guitar or read, and crash. I'm not used to having to get up early (just graduated college ).

It is good to keep a journal though -- I'm more motivated to work harder and contribute to the forum as well.

I'm heading home on my motorcycle for the weekend shortly, but when I get back I'll update my journal. Been eating clean the rest of the week -- gonna be hard this weekend

Looking forward to trying out some recipes from ChocoTaco369's food porn thread

Hey Zach, nice to see a fellow AB employee out here. I also work at the campus in St. Louis and use the gym over in the Bevo building. Nice to know there is a fellow Primal person at AB. I'm going to have to give that sludge a try, sounds pretty good to me.

Cool! Yeah it is great with chocolate protein powder (I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey) -- if you don't mind a little bit of sugar try the Caramel Toffee Fudge flavor. It is convenient for a quick meal and easy to travel with.

This weekend didn't got exactly according to plan

I ended up eating some junk and drinking too frequently!

I realize it is sorta boring to post my daily eating schedule on here, so I'm going to focus on just writing about my workouts and any new recipes I try. I am not going to MMA tonight, so I'm going to stock up on some groceries and test out some new dishes. I'm overdue for some primal food!

I cooked up the Spicy Chicken & Bacon Poppers this evening -- got the recipe online.

They are absolutely scrumptious! AND I didn't let any bacon fat go to waste I cooked up the rest of my chicken for my daily salad. I was happy to read today's article about food variety because I was just thinking about how I tend to eat the same thing nearly every day, but I really do enjoy it. I am excited to expand my repertoire of foods though.

I did jiu-jitsu and No-Gi jiu-jitsu today after work. It was brutal, but I am finally getting better at ground fighting! I'm going to do some serious shopping for cooking supplies soon and get to work on new recipes.

I've been doing a crappy job keeping up with my Primal Journal. The past two weekends have been pretty much crap too. I went down to the Lake of the Ozarks two weekends ago and drank way too much and didn't eat Primal (except a couple meals). I did the same damn thing this weekend too.

My goal is to cut down on drinking (i.e. no hard alcohol or getting drunk) and also get serious with eating Primal. I purchased a bunch of cooking supplies, and all I need now is a good knife and food processor.

I just finished cooking up some chicken and trying out a flax bread recipe that uses almond flour/meal. We will see how it turns out! I'm definitely excited to try out some of these awesome recipes I've discovered on the site. I purchased some more cooking supplies too! Last item on the list is a food processor, and I'm currently looking at the 11cup Cuisineart -- just waiting for it to go down in price at Macy's.

I stopped keeping up on my Primal journal (although I have been doing a tremendous job sticking to the Primal lifestyle), and with the start of the 30 Day Challenge, I figure now is the best time to start keeping track of things again!
