  • Starting Today

Im not sure if I am doing this right, but I just wanted to say I am starting SERIOUS paleo today. Had a good day of eating to kick it off. My main problem is sugar and diet soda. So here we go...

Good luck, akplatt. What is your ultimate goal with paleo/primal eating?

On a mission to help others master movement, build unbreakable strength, & eat MORE food (can't beat that.) Weekly fitness, health & nutrition articles at

Good on you akplatt. Most people lack the fortitude to go serious paleo.

      The "Seven Deadly Sins"

      Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc) . . . . . Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant etc)
      Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc) . . . Refined foods (salt/sugars etc )
      Legumes (soy/beans/peas etc)

        Go for it man!

It's grandma, but you can call me sir.

I am doing the same thing. It will be one of the hardest things you will ever do... but if you can get passes all cravings you will be home free! When you want junk, go work out and eat some fat... it WILL pass.

          Stay strong!!!

          Best of luck

like Tarlach said, good for you for going all the way into the paleo, not just primal deal. Try eating something you really like only a few days a week. I have coconut milk smoothies and almond butter as treats when I need 'em.

Well, I dont know if I started off so well today. Any feedback is appreciated.

Last night dinner- chicken breasts/sauteed spinach and mushrooms. About 32 oz Diet coke( its like crack for me. Gonna be the hardest to break...)

8pm snack (because I always want something now) - 2 HUGE spoonfuls of ALmond butter. I wanted the half pan of brownies sitting there, staring at me. Instead I went for the butter..

Breakfast - 3 egg whites, 1 egg, handful of tomatoes, 1/4 avocado. Coffee/cream. Lots.

STARVING at 9:45, had a handful of almonds.

Noon - fell off the wagon (I think). At our Central Market here, they have these spring rolls with avocado/carrots/cukes/lettuce/ and nice pieces of tuna sashimi. YUM. Its just wrapped in rice paper so I think thats not paleo/primal, is it? STill hungry, so had an additional 4oz or so meat.

Does anyone realize how great a HUGE Diet Dr Pepper would be right NOW?

            • #7

Eat your eggs!! Don't ever ever throw the yolks away again, that's exactly why you were starving at 9:45. There is absolutely no reason to throw away yolks, they're the only nutritious part of the egg. If you're concerned about the cholesterol, just read Mark's post on it and you'll understand.

You're right, the spring rolls aren't primal, the rice paper is still rice! That and Tarlach will tell you the carrots, cucumber, and lettuce aren't Paleo either (not sure about the avocado?? Tarlach??)

With your dinner last night, you'll want to start moving away from chicken breast unless you add serious amounts of fat to the rest of your meal. There just isn't enough fat compared to the protein to keep you full. I really only like whole chicken anymore, and that's so I can eat the skin and dark meat. I'll mix the breast meat with (homemade) mayonaise to make chicken salad, because otherwise it's too dry and boring. You could wrap the breasts in bacon as well (nitrate free), that would add quite a bit more fat.

My husband is still addicted to Diet Coke, it drives me crazy. In my opinion you have to go cold turkey, get through the caffeine withdrawal, and never look back. Diet soda (and all sugary drinks really) taste so bad to me now after about a year or so without them, you just have to get away from all that sugar (or sugar substitute in the case of diet).

Stay strong, don't cave to the soda if you really want to get over it!!!

You rock. Thank you so much for your input. Will you continue to check on me? or maybe I can just check in with you. The avocado HAS to be paleo.. Im going to go check on that right now. Its so yummy and loaded with fat I assumed it was right under eating MEAT.

So no carrots or cucumbers, huh? Well Im okay with broccoli and spinach and tomatoes, but what else? I just bought a bag of sugar snap peas to snack on raw... are they out?

I have plenty of apples and grapes. A few peaches cause they taste so good right now.

Another question for all you out there. What about school lunches? It seems impossible to me to get my kids paleo when they have to tote a brown bag to school. Suggestions?

                • #9

I just found an amazing way to kill a sugar craving and don't know why i didn't think of this earlier. Last night I sliced an apple, put a little almond butter on it, then some raisins on top of that and it was a fantastic way to end a day. The easiest (and cheapest )way to get your kids paleo, is to make them fast every day for school lunches. (jokes).

Diet Dr. Pepper....... stop drinking it.

                    Egg yolks......start eating those.

Eat more of the vegetables, meat, nuts, and less of the fruits. Consume 0 oz of diet Dr. Pepper per day.

                    That's my advice.

                    • #11

Actually, protein is even more satiating than fat. It takes a lot longer to process.

                      • #12

OTB, maybe it depends on the person? I don't do well (read: am hungry again too soon) with high protein/lower fat ratios.

akplatt, I think you're just confusing "Paleo" with "Primal." There's a post in the archives about the difference, and Tarlach has posted several times about the exclusions in "Hard-core Paleo" versus a Primal diet. They don't include nightshades for one (tomatoes, all peppers, eggplant), and also exclude all "modernly palatable foods" (which I do kind of understand, but not 100%). I can't go that far yet, but lean more and more that way as I get more used to Primal eating. Oh, and sugar snap peas (and all peas, because they are legumes) aren't even Primal. I used to eat them before, but actually found they would make my lips burn, not sure what the reaction was but obviously something bad! I'd shoot for really understanding the Primal Blueprint ideas first (look in the Primal Blueprint 101 section for great starter posts), and keep fine tuning your diet until it really works for you.

Also, if you search the forum you'll find a couple of really great conversations about school lunches, people have posted great ideas about what they do already!

Fat is fast to process, except your gut slows down gastric emptying when fat hits it, so it's still going to satisfy you for a long time. Although it's easier to just say eat fat and protein, and you'll be satisfied.

Artificial sweeteners are every bit as addictive as cocaine. I've been addicted to a non-caffeinated soda before (20-24 cans/day).

Learning enough about them finally made me quit.

Sweeteners release insulin as soon as they hit your tongue:

Probably going to be a bitch to drink diet coke and intermittently fast:

                          They make you overeat:

Drinking something with aspartame causes the aspartame to be metabolized into three things:

                          1) Formaldehyde

                          2) Aspartic acid

                          3) Phenylalanine

The formaldehyde is a fairly common thing, but in excess it can cause problems.

The aspartic acid is a neuroexcitotoxin, just like the free glutamate in MSG, and it can easily kill/lesion nerve cells that are exposed to the bloodstream, most significantly the hypothalamus, which regulates appetite, activity, sex, and generally what's screwed up in people with metabolic syndrome/leptin resistance.

The phenylalanine, particularly if you're drinking the diet coke without any accompanying food, will outcompete tryptophan for passage across the blood brain barrier, and is both converted into L-Dopa and then into other catecholamines, producing a possibly addictive reward, and simultaneously downregulating serotonin production, making you more depressed.

Plus, guess who got his friend Ronald Reagan to overrule a unanimous FDA panel decision that aspartame was not safe to allow into the food supply? Donald Rumsfeld, of course, the same chap behind such lovely debacles as selling chemical weapons to Iraq in the late 80s and getting the government to buy billions of worthless Tamiflu a few years ago because he owns a ton of stock in it.

It's important to approach quitting diet coke just like you would quitting smoking in order to be successful. It's astonishingly easy to relapse.

Thank you so much. Man, I think its so silly that I CANNOT quit... sometimes I talk myself into "its really not THAT bad" or "at least its not CRACK (and I guess it IS)", but sh**.... I WANT TO QUIT. Thanks for taking it so seriously. Sounds like you were just like me. There is hope! I just had 3 today.. I kinda gave up. I tried drinking green tea cause water just gets so dang boring, but it didnt cut it. Thanks for such convicting information. Tomorrow is a new day!

Had a pretty good eating day today, except for the soda.

                            Another question...

Do we care about proportions or eating combinations? Is it ok to have just an apple as a snack, or should it be coupled with almond butter, or can I have a slice of turkey or should it be wrapped around an avocado?

                            • #15

From my own experience (and my husband's) the thing that has cut our cravings is to dramatically increase fat intake.

LOTS of butter, fat meats, bacon, eggs, mayonnaise, etc. Seriously. Lots.

When we eat enough fat chocolate doesn't even sound good. Ditto on coke and ice cream.

I used to think mac and cheese was my favorite food. Turns out if I make an awesome cheese sauce and put it on broccoli or cauliflower I like it even better than mac and cheese.
