    So the chicken stock stayed simmering all night and all morning (last night's dinner ended up being chicken and rosemary sausage from a good local farm, baked sweet potato, and sauteed tomatoes). After I strained the bones out of the soup, I added in the chicken meat, about a pound of wild mushrooms, some more thyme (because thyme and mushrooms are soooo good together!), more garlic, more onion, and a lot of zucchini. It turned out fantastic. Simmering it overnight definitely made a big difference in the richness of the stock. I'm making sure we get some soup bones from the elk next month, and I'll be trying out making bone broth with them next.

    I spent the afternoon clearing out my closet. A fair number of my clothes are now too big to wear, and I wanted to get them put away. I'm probably going to donate a bunch of them eventually, but I want to decide which are special favourites to maybe have altered. I took all my smaller clothing out of storage and put it in my closet instead. Some of them don't fit yet--the size 4 and 6 stuff from when I was training like mad is still too small--but some of them do, and the others are good motivators. Besides, it saves me digging them out in a few weeks, right?

    I also put all my high heels in a bag to give away. I didn't wear them that often before, but after the wonderful break/sprain/MCL tear last year I haven't been able to wear them at all. I know that now that things are stronger, I could probably work back up to wearing them again, but honestly, I don't particularly want to anymore. I'll take them in to the office and see if any of my coworkers want them. Otherwise, I'll donate them. Some other woman can have sore feet if she feels like it.

      I did my first regular CrossFit class today. My fundamentals course was awesome, but it felt great to get in with the regular group. I was nervous at first, but one of my friends goes to the same gym, and he was there tonight and walked me through things a bit, plus the coaches are all really awesome at helping you with anything unfamiliar. I was really pleased with how I did--my push press is not very heavy at this point, but my form is really coming together. I actually sort of rocked the tabata workout (20 on, 10 off, DB swings and situps, 8 rounds). I finished off tired but feeling fantastic. I get really giddy after working out, all blissed out on happy endorphins.

      I also broke the 180 pound mark today, weighing in at 179 this morning. Obviously primal living agrees with me.

      Oh, food today:
      Breakfast: cottage cheese, berries with heavy cream, cafe au lait with whole milk
      Snack: nectarine
      Lunch: homemade chicken and wild mushroom soup
      Snack: the leftover ham I brought to eat at lunch but didn't feel like eating then, also a whole milk cappuccino. I don't usually have more than one coffee a day, but I was out of the office this afternoon working and felt like having a second. I wanted it with whipping cream, but the coffee place only had it pre-sweetened, so I decided on the whole milk instead.
      After workout, just walked into the house: a bit more of the leftover ham
      Dinner: cream cheese and mushroom omelette

      Eating today was a bit more random than usual. Following my appetite is leading to some interesting patterns for what I eat when.

            So last night's CrossFit included 100 pull-ups (with 100m sprints in between sets, except with my knee still recovering I did a couple of sprints and then switched to 10 lunges). I can't do pull-ups unassisted (thank dog for pilates bands). But I did make my 100. And I took photos of my hands:





            And this is what I ate after--slow-cooked elk roast (it fell apart when I cut it), zucchini sauteed with butter and thyme, and a baked sweet potato:

              I agree 100 with you here. My husband is a good example. He likes the idea of local fresh food, but is happy enough to leave it to me to acquire and deal with. His idea of meat comes on a styrofoam tray covered in plastic. Last night I was prepping some kale I picked up at last week's farmers' market, and of course, had to wash away a lot of worms from the leaves. Some big fat ones, some tiny green ones. He would have stopped right at the sink and the entire batch would have ended up in the compost bin. Later, while cooking the creamed kale, I spotted a few more tiny worms that had remained hidden but surfaced in the pan, so I just picked them up and quickly scooped them into the trash. He would have been done for sure if one ended up on his plate!! Not that I want to be eating the wormies myself either, but it's part of the process sometimes. He grew up a city boy, while I spent many of my childhood and teen years on small hobby farms, so was very used to dealing with garden critters, butchering, and so on. When I recount to hubby how one year we cut up a moose carcass on our kitchen table, he can't even listen!

              Nice eats by the way, and well earned blisters, too!

                  I'm a city kid too, but I've made an effort over the last few years to get closer to my food. I grew up going to farmers markets and visiting friends of our family in rural areas, so I already had some connection, but now it feels so good to know the people who produce what I eat.

                  I'm trying to get into eating more parts of the animal too. I made an amazing chicken stock on the weekend--cooked it for about 24 hours and then made it into a chicken, wild mushroom, and zucchini soup (can you tell what's in season?). I've made stock before, but never cooked it for that long. It was definitely worth it! I'm getting some bones when we get the elk later this month, so I'll make some bone broth from those too. We will probably get some organ meats too, but I need to work myself up to cooking things like heart. Liver, I'm comfortable with, and even kidneys, okay, but some of the other bits are a bit more exotic to me.

                  I'm lucky that my partner is all for trying new things. He's trying to get more primal, although his meals away from home are not as strict (he still eats quite a bit of sugar and some grain). I'm more accustomed to careful eating because of the celiac thing, so I think the conversion has been easier for me in some ways, but he's taking some great steps and is enjoying how he feels and looks, so it's positive for both of us.

                    Oh, and red wine from my fave local organic winery (made with local wild cherries 'cause wine grapes don't do so well here).

                      So my first major trip as a primal traveller went relatively well, although not perfectly.

                      Challenge number one was eating at the airport. I was running late in the morning, so I figured I would just wait to eat until I cleared security. The last time I flew to the US, there were some okay options inside the gate. However, they've since renovated the airport, and now the food services in there have changed. There was a little restaurant/pub, but the choices were all panini sandwiches or pre-made salads with croutons (as a celiac, I can't just pick them off safely either). Otherwise, the choices were Starbucks and a corner store place. I went with a cup of fresh fruit from Starbucks, a whole milk latte (I still do dairy if it's higher fat), and a packet of unroasted, unsalted almonds from the corner store. I also got out my laptop, went on Twitter, and commented on the lack of celiac-friendly food choices, mentioning the airport authority in my tweet. I later got a responding tweet stating that they were passing on my comments to their food services people, and they asked for my email for follow up. I gave them my email addy and received a response noting that their food services managers were looking at providing better alternatives. Hopefully this means the next celiac or other gluten-free person can eat a bit better! All they really need to do is provide a salad with no croutons, breaded meats, etc.

                      Also, I learned that if you wear your VFFs through security, they don't make you take off your shoes. Yet another reason to travel in your Vibrams.

                      By the time I arrived at my friend's place in Minneapolis, I was definitely hungry since the food options on the plane were not primal friendly at all (biscotti, crackers, or peanuts). Fortunately, my friend offered me a Greek yogurt to tide me over until we could have something more substantial. Yay! We then headed off to the local organic food co-op to get groceries for the weekend. There were a few of us visiting, so she decided that each person would probably be best getting things to accommodate her own diet, particularly with food sensitivities and one vegetarian in the group. I ended up with loads of fresh, local food that fit the primal WOE. I will definitely need to do more of that for future trips--it was pretty easy to grab stuff that would be simple and not need cooking but still met my needs.

                      Restaurants were trickier. Our first night, we went for Vietnamese food and I succumbed to the lure of the pho. Oh pho, why are you so tasty? However, I did leave most of my noodles. The second night was Greek food, and I ate the most phenomenal lamb loin chops as well as this baked goat cheese with peppers and onions. We went elsewhere for dessert. I ended up eating a flourless chocolate torte (made with nut flour, but also with sugar). The third evening was Thai food, so I had some satay skewers and tom yum soup. Also, I shared a bit of a coconut custard (again, sugar...I almost never eat sweets at home).

                      On the trip home, I ended up needing to eat at the airport again with few good options. I ended up ordering a breakfast sandwich with no bread at Tim Hortons. The counter staff found this an absolutely bizarre request, and then the woman who was preparing the food came over to find out if that was really what I wanted. I had also packed a Lara Bar for the flight, but I ended up stuck waiting at the airport because my partner was delayed being able to get me, and I was at the point where I really did need to eat or I was going to start chewing on the furniture.

                      Anyhow, I made it home in one piece, although I definitely violated the rule about getting enough sleep in favour of maybe a bit too much play. I have a very strong internal alarm clock, so I was up by 7:00 am every morning on my trip, even if I didn't get to sleep until well after 2:00. Everyone else slept in just fine, so I had some very peaceful mornings on the front porch with a book and a coffee.

                      Now I have about three and a half weeks before I leave for India!

                          I was in Minneapolis for about three days on the long weekend. I'm back in Canada now! I didn't realize you were that close or I would have loved to have had a coffee or something. I have a couple of friends there, so I may make another trip to the area at some point.

                          My next stops in the US are Chicago (but only for an hour as I race from one terminal to the next) and Newark (for four hours) on my way to India. On they way home, I fly through Heathrow but not for long enough to actually see London.

                          There's so much to do before I leave! I still have one more rabies vaccination to go, plus my oral cholera one, then I start the anti-malarial. I still have some internal transfer flights to book, a few hotel reservations to confirm, shopping for some new clothes so that I'm culturally appropriate and not offending research participants (no bare shoulders, no skirts or shorts above the knee), buying a netbook instead of dragging along this heavy old laptop, getting a new airline-friendly pack, playing with my new camera so I have a feel for it before I go...okay, that last one is not so much hard work as fun playtime since I'm going to do some fall photography in the river valley.

                            How disappointing! Definitely when you are back in the area let me know... I would be more than willing to make a trip to the cities just to see ya! ( I have friends there too... so it wouldn't be a "waste" of time or anything)

                              Ugh. Woke up this morning with a definitely unhappy digestive system. We went out with my brother-in-law, his wife, and a bunch of their friends. I had a great time dancing and no alcohol because I was the driver. All good, but then I ordered a Sprite and ate some of the spinach dip and tortilla chips that were on the table to share. Big mistake. I'm not used to digesting that stuff anymore! I woke up this morning seriously puffy and rather, um, stopped up. I was also exhausted and feeling low, so I decided to skip out on CrossFit today. Sigh. I felt ill for a lot of the day, so I ate a couple of eggs with some tea for breakfast and ended up just having a whole milk cappuccino between then and dinner time. Unplanned IF, I suppose. I'm getting better at not freaking out if I'm not hungry enough to eat a meal. I can just skip it instead of feeling like I'm being unhealthy for not eating every X hours.

                              I did get to the market, though. It's the last week for fresh blackberries, raspberries, and cherries, so I bought lots since from here on in they'll only be available as imports or frozen at the grocery store. The apples are coming in, though, so I got a big bag of Macs. I also picked up my first spaghetti squash--we will see how primal "pasta" goes over with my beloved. Stocked up on meats for the week and picked up some good fresh veggies. Also, my friend who sells soups, salad dressings, and crackers had a great new dressing this week--coconut lime! Most of her stuff is primal friendly, no sugar, soy, or other weirdness. The coconut lime tastes sort of like ranch, but a million times better.

                              I ran a bunch of other errands after the market and picked up some good quality unflavoured protein powder for shakes. We've been using up some chocolate stuff from before that isn't too bad (stevia sweetened), but I'm looking forward to getting into the new one. Picked up a bunch of other primal kitchen staples while I was at the organic grocery store. I've started looking in other people's baskets when I'm there to see who else might be primal/paleo too, and I check feet for VFFs. Too funny.

                              Anyhow, dinner tonight was bison steaks. I tossed some tomato chunks in the pan with some butter after I finished cooking the bison and sauteed them a bit. After I took them out, there was a bit of a nice, rich sauce in the bottom of the pan, so I poured it over the steaks. I am definitely doing that again--it was delicious! Along with the steak and tomatoes, I also cooked up some zucchini in butter with a bit of salt and pepper. I was going to experiment with a primal strawberry rhubarb crumble thing tonight, but I'm leaving that until tomorrow now because my appetite is still sort of meh.
