I FINALLY had a decent half marathon running on FAT!

  • @relaygirl mmmmmmm meatballs! i do this all the time. try grating a little sweet potatoe in there and use egg as a binder. delicious! i take a few to work for breaki...actually thx for reminding me, i'm going to make some tomorrow!

    @Jenry ...i am NOT really into changing things to more barefoot than the pacegloves/NB minimus. they are plenty flat and keep me and my feet happy. i really do think you just have to spend the time to figure out which model works best for you. like i said, plenty of middle of the road options that don't have to be Vibram. I think the main thing is to not just assume tons of cushion is a good thing...especially if you are prone to chronic injuries.

      • melo-what seasonings do you use for the meatballs. I love sweet potatoes and ground beef. Maybe this could be the perfect race food.

        I just made a HUGE pan of ground beef (2.5 lbs) shredded cabbage, big portabella mushrooms and grated zucchini. It is a big mess of food but it will get my husband and I through the weekend. We have so many games all over the county we will be eating on the go the whole weekend. I used sea salt, paul prudhomme meat magic seasoning, and ACV. I sautéed the zucchini and mushrooms in a lot of butter to kind of brown them and then mix them into the meat and cabbage.

        Sometimes my IT band feels like it is vibrating-like a harp string. It is a very "nervy" feeling.

        • This thread has it all, food recipes, ketogenic discussion, and now minimalism in running! Because of this thread I am going to make bone broth this weekend, run on BP coffee, and look at other minimal shoes besides Vibrams! Have a great weekend everyone!

          • Great Hispanicgamer-have fun with all of that

            I had an awesome run in the rain with my own dogs. They have been a little neglected. I came home and had a big cup of my homemade chicken broth with sea salt. So amazing! Chicken broth just tastes better to me than straight beef broth. I love the beef but I have to add roasted tomatoes to it for me to "love" it. I know the broth makes a difference in my health.

            So, it is chilly--I tried on my kick a** nike running tights--not so pretty Maybe next week? Maybe my standards are too high? But maybe they should be high when it involves tight, black, lycra that all your neighbors will see you running up and down the road in.

            Off to the ballfields. I could never sit there through a double header without running that day. My brain would blow up. I have a lot of lacroix and some nuts and boiled eggs.

            • relaygirl - i use my own version for meatballs which is a cross between the nomnompaleo recipe and the paleomg breakfast balls
              sometimes i don't bother with the bacon, sometimes i use regular mushroom, i normally grate in the yam as opposed to dice, normally no cilantro. normally don't bother with the maple syrup. i find she adds lots of sugars in her recipe that don't really need it. it's good with it but trying to keep my sweet tooth at bay!

              hispanicgamer - this thread is the only one i keep coming back to! very diverse but all things that will help us and our running in the long run. bone broth is key for me too. i made some with pork bones which is just 'ok' but does the trick. i have a cup in the morning and sometimes add turmeric. actually lately i'm having turmeric tea in the morning - scoop of coconut cream, water, dab of honey and teaspoon of turmeric. great anti-inflammatory and awesome for my colon health.

              on my end i woke up yesterday with a MAJOR strain in my neck/upper back. no idea why or how but i was practically in tears. probably from sitting in front of a computer i wonder if it also maybe had something to do with flipping tires on wed (my first time! so fun!). anyway, stayed home, got drugged up (which i do not like to do but it was necessary!) and laid low all day. better this morning but that means at least one more day of minimal activity. might go for a really long walk though.

              • Liver...do y'all eat liver? I have TONS of it in my freezer. I am wondering if should cut it up in little pieces and just swallow it whole like the whole 30 girl does. I have tried many different ways to "blend" it in and it doesn't work for us.

                Also, what kind of hot tea do y'all like? I stopped drinking it for while because BP Dave says it grows mold. But now that it is chilly I have been drinking it (chilly here is like 60). Plus, I have so much I hate to waste it (mold or not, I guess).

                • So today I ran 9 miles of which the first half was on BP coffee. Compared to last weekend I will say my run went better but the second half was powered by Gatorade. I think it will take some time for me to run 10+ miles on BP coffee but I am determined to do it. Bone broth will be made tomorrow using the recipe from PaleoPorn.com.

                  • questions Hispanicegamer...why do you have to run on BP coffee?? seems a bit random. especially for higher mileage like 9miles. why not have a shake with a scoop of whey protein, berries and greens?

                    if for some reason you're determined to stick with BP coffee i would "up" it and add some eggs or egg yolks in there. Mark did a blog entry on adding eggs to coffee. i've been adding egg yolks for a while now (trying to keep my good fats up in case i decide i wanna try for a baby in the next few years...i'm getting up there!) and love it. it's basically my breakfast.
                    but i've also tried whole eggs as well as yolks + scoop of whey. they were fine but were getting more 'shake' like and less coffee like so i switched back.

                    but personally, i need a bit more prior to any run over 12km. i usually make a shake as described above + scoop of 24h yogurt or half avocado. yum!

                    @relaygirl the only way i've dealt with liver (not overly fond of the taste) is cubing it and adding it to a chili. i've done that with heart too successfully. what about making pate? friend of mine did that and it was awesome!! i also think Mark did a post about it. here is Chris Kresser's...i actually had it tagged to read

                    • oh and re tea...yes i drink it...a lot of it!
                      i'm obsessed with David's Tea right now but will have to stop once my supplies dwindle cause there is "flavouring" in there which i don't appreciate.
                      but i drink tea all day long at work. normally herbal or maybe white/green tea. no one will convince me it's a bad thing!

                      • Hispanicgamer--why, why, why would you drink a Gatorade? What exactly did you need-calories? minerals? hydration? All of those can be had without drinking that stuff! Is your goal to run fasted? Do you run 1st thing in the morning usually? If you feel you need electrolytes use a honey stinger gel, hammergel or something with natural products at least with no dyes, etc. I really think, like melo said, that its better to eat something before than to have a Gatorade in the middle of it.

                        It is hard to do and hardcore but training without any fuel-just water or just a nuun-will get you prepared for your race. Running dog tired and feeling hungry and like you can't go on...yet you do, will make you so freaking strong. Then, when you race-add something gentle in and it's like you are burning jet fuel. It is hard physically and mentally to get yourself to do it. It made me look at 13 miles as nothing. I'm not an ultra runner by any means but putting the 13 miles in perspective mentally helps me to physically need less.

                        I did not run or walk today...yet. I am going insane. It is cold but beautiful. Okay, not cold but 60. I will break down and probably go hike 5 miles this afternoon. I was trying to not do anything. I have started packing for my relay. Doing well with keeping the contents of my bag low. It is awful managing a lot of clothes and gear in a van so keeping it as simple as possible is key. Hard for me because I am running clothes junkie...yes, another addiction!!!

                        I'm on a mom's running club board and I just sold like 50 items of running clothing. My husband will be so excited to clear out some of the miniscule closet we share. I have to go get it boxed up now-not fun.

                        • Thanks Meloroaster and Relaygirl for the advice. To be honest, I did the Gatorade as an experiment, I'm a scientist and wanted to try something. During the week, I run at noon and find that my runs are satisfactory with no hitting the wall or feelings of exhaustion. Last Saturday, I tried my run on BP Tea and had a meh kind of run. This Saturday I felt better during the first half and much better during the last half after Gatorade. So, I think I know now that I may need to add something to my BP coffee for my long run. This coming Saturday I will try Mark's Primal coffee with added MCT oil and see if this improves my run. I will not do Gatorade and instead will get some Stinger gels but try not to use them. I really do want to do my long runs fasted and am really just figuring what works for me. I agree with you Relay and your thread is what led me to try running fasted so I swear no more carb supplementation unless I am crashing and burning on the run. I really appreciate the feedback and thank you for the training tips.

                            In no way am i trying to refute your method, but as was mentioned, you must learn to suffer! With that, do not be afraid to walk during a long run, especially with the aim of no food. If you got to mile 8 and thought, 'Need. Sugar. Now!' To the point where you can't construct a sentence, walk that last mile if needs be. Just do anything to get there. When I started, I ran 5 miles out and back. It hurt. I walked. Felt like a wimp when people saw me walk, personal pride and all, but now I run 2 hours, hilly as you like, fasted, sometimes with no dinner the night before.. Daily! To use the 'wall' analogy, it's a case of chipping through the wall with nothing but your bare hands, as opposed to the jackhammer that is glucose.

                              I use a walk-run method to get through my long runs. Usually a 1 minute walk at each mile marker. Yesterday, I completed 16 miles... first time I have run that distance in nearly 15 years.

                                That is awsome! And I'll bet the comparative time between 16 minutes of walking to the rest of your run was absolutley minimal?
