  • Vibram Marathoners

So I was out with my Galloway group this morning and we had breakfast together afterwards. I think I'm the only Primal/Paleo person in the group (except my friend, Laura, who does Paleo off and on). Anyway, two of the more seasoned marathoners were concerned about me training/racing in vibrams. As of next month I'll have been barefoot for a year, and running in vibrams for 7 months, and I'll have been racing in them for a year by the time I hit my marathon in September.
Any idea why they were so concerned about my well being in vibrams for a marathon?

also when I had to check out early to pick up my beef CSA share, everyone was shocked that we ate 30 lbs of meat per month. They're all like "that would feed us for a year", and I'm like (in my head) "wth do you people eat?"

ive done a half marathon in them, does that help? I have been wearing them every day for well over a year. I also do CrossFit in them.

I think for most people they go with the CW that you need very supportive shoes for running. All those type of shoes did was hurt my feet.

same here. I told them that the brooks I have gave me a lot of A/LCL pain, and then they suggested asics or merrel. I do NOT want toe corsets. I like being able to wiggle my toes.
my vibrams corrected the way I stride (I used to walk with toes of one foot facing outwards so my feet sort of made an L) and eliminated all pain.

I'm not a marathoner by any means, but I do my fair share of walking/sprinting; and now, occasional jogging in my Vibrams. I just completed a crossfit workout with them, for the first time. I personally wouldn't use any other shoe, outside of the times I'm forced to wear conventional shoes, which I hope isn't more often than I'd like.

Well, my parents haven't seen my vibrams up close and personal. But, I'm sure they'll try to say something about them. God forbid, they'll say I can't wear them in church. I, however, will try my hand at it. There are some social gatherings with a strict dress code, too. That'd be the only reasonable explanation for me to be "forced" to wear conventional shoes.

I just saw the Bormios, you suggested. I'm also thinking about getting the Treks, because of the Kangaroo leather build; and I think they're a tad cheaper .

I wore my bormios to church all winter. I get plenty of funny looks and questions. My mom is always chewing me out about my komodos.

I am not a runner, but my husband is. He just finished his first half-marathon in vibrams, and had no problems at all as far as I know. He's been running in them for around a year? I think? He's on his third pair. He LOVES them! He's got another half coming up this weekend, and he has no concerns whatsoever about running in them. Even ran in them in the winter here, although he briefly tried using toe socks when it was at the coldest.

He's just happy he's gotten me getting my first pair of minimalists that I plan to wear at work, and pretty much giggling that they are called Lemings. As am I.

Good luck on your marathon! Have a great run!

Thanks! I got my gait analyzed yesterday and reported to my group leader. I overpronate and land flat footed (though my torched vibrams suggest I land toward the ball a little, since the sole there is nearly worn through)
Analysis lady said I should be fine as long as I remain mindful of how my hips & ankles take to the long runs.

If anyone has a rubbing problem, try Sprinkling Anti Lady Monkey Butt powder in your V's, then slick your toes up with blister block. Worked like a dream for me today on my 7 mile hilly run. Absolutely no pain.
