Yeah, I use the Tropical Traditions coconut cream. I get their coconut oil. If you check out their site regularly, they have buy 1 get 1 free all the time. Makes it super cheap.

Nope, I 100% meant the cream. I use the kind from Topical Traditions. And really the consistency is no different than when I used to put peanut butter in a shake (in my past life)

While I don't eat or compete quite like you do, I have a full day then 2 hour BJJ sessions, then home to put the kid to sleep and eat. At 45 that's tough and find recovery the hardest part, right behind getting to sleep after that day. Can you offer any tips:
          • post dinner snacks - I'm either shoving whey in or something, and find I'm craving stuff while I wait to fall asleep - do you end it with your last meal above?
          • omega supps - fish or krill - do you use or have you seen any benefit?
          • Almond milk vs. coconut - any comparisons to offer?

Again - thanks for sharing and for any feedback! I'll be watching and cheering for you on fight nights!
Post dinner: I make these primal "candies" with coconut oil and pure cocoa and a little bit of honey. Its pretty much straight saturated fat. It also comes in handy on days when my dinner protein source is super lean (like chicken breast) as a way to get in the fat I need.
I use Maine Natural Health fish oil. I'm kind of anerd about things, so I compared like 5 or 6 brands and figured out what the cost per gram of EPA/DHA was and they were the best value.
Definitely coconut milk. The fat in it is mostly saturated whereas the fat in the almond milk will be mostly O6.

            Hi Abe,

My wife and I watch quite a bit of MMA, for different reasons (she digs the guys, of course).

Anyway, I'm curious about the culture of cutting weight. How much weight are you cutting for fights, what sort of procedure do you do for it? It seems some of the weight cuts are counter-productive to athletic performance, and I'm surprised it doesn't affect fighters more than it does.

Anyway, thanks for answering our questions.

I fight in the 265 weight class and weigh about 250, so I'm always 15 lbs under. So I never have to cut weight. Of course, I sometimes have to fight guys that are 50lbs bigger than me. But its just what I weigh. So sorry I can't really give you any input on that.

Yeah, I guess that's a non-issue for many of the HW guys.

Hi Abe, I think it is awesome that you found paleo and it helped out so much! I am very happy for you figuring out your respiratory issues mostly because I struggle with the same thing and am a martial artist as well. I posted a reply in the article about your story on the homepage but I realize this may be a better spot to communicate, so I will share my story and current situation (was pretty much bed ridden 2 weeks now I am moving around outside a bit). I have not been paleo very long but would love to know how long it took you to see the results with respiratory infections. I find it very interesting though that this comes out suddenly when I am having all these problems, it was actually my father who read the article mark posted about you and told me to read it (i got my parents to go primal with me) timing seems it could not be any better honestly... so anyway here is the original post and my current story...

I am 21 years old, an MMA fighter and an Oyama Karate us open Kumite champion. that is me in my avatar. I have been put on anti biotics mostly z pack and biaxin for respiratory infections every other month for as long as I can remember now, never fully getting rid of whatever I have had. i have been completely OCD about eating pro biotic and anti oxidant as to combat these terrible anti biotics i HAVE to take to function. It has been incredibly discouraging not to be able to fully commit to my martial arts the way I have wanted to because of getting sick all the time. it is also emberassing and debilitating, i am also a male model and just recently shot for a very big campaign.. once again starting to get sick in my lungs right before it, went to the doc at this point i just say gimme a z pack… so this time around though my body i think really had enough of it. my glands and lymph nodes had become swollen and it was scary, but i tried to ignore it and shot for the campaign.. i had also just found out about paleo and primal blueprint and commited to it in hopes it might help my lungs then when i got home, the swelling of the lymph nodes and glands got worse (i do not blame paleo in any way for this. in all honestly i naturally ate paleo pretty much just cut out any dairy and grains).. the doctors thought i may have lung cancer or hodgkins lymphoma it was very scary. thank god no cancers, it is a suspected allergy triggered asthma i have had my whole life (or something, i have to go to the allergy doctor now) i am eating 100% paleo now and after such a scare there is no question of self control etc that is easy for me, i am taking EPA-DHA=2:1 ratio 400 mg epa 200 mg DHA morning and night, a multi vitamin in the morning and 1000 mg flax seed oil 3x a day. ZMA before bed. Also for right now the doctor has me taking allegra and drinking as much water as possible till we figure out exactly what is wrong with me. the swelling has started going down in my glands and lymph nodes finally. My question if anyone can help is basically, WHAT ELSE CAN I BE DOING?? AM I TAKING THE CORRECT FISH OILS? SHOULD I STOP FLAX SEED OILS?. my dream my whole life has been to train in a mountain in solitude for months like masutatsu oyama had done and musashi miyamoto, i am a very spiritual person and accept mother nature as my god and do the best i can to not take these anti biotics but i get so sick it is unavoidable? up till now i have not been able to go train in the mountains in the winter because i always get too sick, i would definitely die of pneumonia. so if anyone has any tips, please. let me know.

oh and i sit comfortably at around 165 lb. fluctuating between 1-6% bf eating from 1,500-12,000 calories a day mostly sedentary now (im sick) but very active normally.

                    Thanks again!

This is horrible! My first thought reading it was Valley Fever. Have you visited the Southwest? If so, have you been tested for Valley Fever? It seems strange to treat with antibiotics if they think it is an allergy. If it is an infection, they need to figure out what kind, yes? I would demand to see a specialist. It seems to me they need to figure out what they are treating before they just throw every antibiotic known to man at you. I don't have any suggestions because this sounds very serious -- beyond the scope of home remedies. I do hope someone who has dealt with something similiar can maybe give you information and questions you need to guide your doctors in the right direction. Good luck!

thanks for a reply Yvonne... What ended up happening after I had gotten home t0o ct. from montauk which is where my job was, I knew, I just had a feeling in my gut that the biaxin was not the correct treatment and I had been certainly mis-diagnosed, for the last 8 years i would say I have been going to the doctor telling her "I have a weird wheeze when i take deep breaths" then she would listen and say I sound find and put me on an anti biotic. this time around because of the swollen glands and lymph nodes being worse then ever before I had to go to a specialist doctor for infectious and disease, as to test for lung cancer and hodgkins lymphoma, very scary days but when the catscans came back they showed no cancers. I am very blessed for that. but then the doctor did a quick little test when i told him about the wheeze and he immediately said "you have asthma, you always have.. it could be allergy triggered by a specific allergy" so now he is sending me to an allergy/asthma specialist and get blood work to find the allergy and figure out the asthma. but i obviously did not get better over night am still very sick and swollen and cant get a damn doc appt. because of this holiday Columbus day? so until then the disease specialist put me on over the counter allegra and said drink more water... haha... after such a scare about cancer, honestly i have no anger towards the doctor that didnt take my concern about my wheeze seriously enough and miss treated me for so many years I am just so happy to be alive. I have never been to the southwest before so I am not sure but will definitely mention that to the doctor when i finally get in! thanks! what i am really curious about is, since abe seemed to have a similar issue with chest infections/anti biotics while still being very healthy cardiovascularly as a fighter, how long do you guys think it will take for me to benefit in that sense by eating primal?

Thanks for sharing Abe. Honestly I'm surprised you don't eat more in the way of carbs given your level of activity and training. I guess you sort of cover that angle with the maltodextrin. Glad it's all working out for you though.

I used to train muaythai now have switched my focus to BJJ. Back when I tried to talk to the muaythai guys about primal (only one other followed it) they all complained of crapping out and needing more carbs. I guess being fat-adapted makes it easy for us to switch back and forth between using fat for fuel or glucose. Most couldn't get past the adaptation stage.

                            Good luck in your career!
I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.

Very difficult to do. I'm 25 years old, 5'7", 133 lbs and I regularly eat over 200g of protein a day, and I'm no athlete. Sometimes I exceed 300g. I will probably eat around 300g of protein in a single sitting on Friday when I go to Fogo de Chao for lunch for my mother's birthday. I'm still losing body fat.

                                Hi Abe,

Enjoyed reading your story, wish you luck in your future bouts

Just a quick couple of questions:

                                1. What does your average day of resistance training look like? Type of lifts, rep range, any endurance work, weights, etc.
                                2. How easy do you find it to maintain your weight?

I'm currently a fat 242lbs, aiming to lose a ton of bodyfat but I want to get my weight up to around 200+ lbs for playing my position in rugby. I have a plan in mind for achieving that, but it would be interesting to see your take on resistance training for comparison.

Thanks in advance for any reply.

                                Tony
