  • Are we supposed to grunt when lifting weights?

Personally I seldom make much grunt noise when pressing or pushing weights but sometimes it seem natural to grunt or do a primal scream to get a really heavy weight up or when going beyond failure! Some people may be grunting too much and annoy people around them, while others could possible implement a little grunting to pep themselves up more.

What about you, are you grunting when working out or training?

Here an article on the important subject of grunting in the gym:

Grunty gym bloke, it’s time to shut the hell up

I even roar like a lion sometimes after I set a new PR. And I get chalk on everything.

I'm not a huge grunter by nature, but on that last set of squats I sound like a walrus in an orgy.

New bench record this morning, eating 1kg beef and posting on MDA.

It just sorta happens. But nobody grunts in Seoul, cause nobody lifts heavy weights (wouldn't fit into skinny jeans anymore). Everyone always looks around -- "what is whitie doing??".

When I'm lifting heavy weights, grunting is almost natural. I never realize I'm doing it. I just want to get through the set.

I never grunt - it weakens valsalva.

Is that where Viking lifters go when they die?

I usually make a grunt or sort of deflating tire sound as I exhale on my last rep or two. But on to more important things...how do you know what a walrus orgy sounds like?

There's a guy at the gym that is so loud that even when the gym is packed you can here him clearly way over on the other end. He just won first place in the light heavy division in the Provincials (Way go to T!)

Maybe I should start grunting louder.....

                              I do the same thing.

I have heard real walruses under the sea and they don't sound anything like grunting.
