  • Your take on Crossfit

    Hey I'm thinking about trying crossfit for a change. Never done it before and there's a gym in town that I might want to try out. If you've tried it, what has your experience been with it as far as strength wise, energy, and what type of results could I expect from doing it. Anything special I should know about it? Like to hear your take on it. Thanks in advance.

      I've been doing Crossfit for about a year and have had a lot of gains in a lot of areas (strength, flexibility, energy, balance etc).
      I enjoy it a lot and plan to keep going for a long time.
      Useful things to know:
      - Crossfit is a general-purpose workout, you won't get brilliant in any one area but you will improve in all areas.
      - Strength, especially strength in relation to bodyweight (e.g. for pullups), is a big deal in Crossfit. But Crossfit itself is sub-optimal for gaining strength. You'll gain strength quicker on a dedicated strength program. So doing this first that may be something to consider.
      - Crossfit isn't perfect and isn't for everyone. You'll probably get people chiming in on this thread on why it's a bad idea. Others like me a big fans. Ultimately both camps are right because it's an individual choice and whether it is worthwhile to an individual is relative, not absolute.
      - Expect to suck at some things (or many things like me)
      - Expect to get better, and to really enjoy getting better.
      - One of the biggest problems with Crossfit are that the people who run it from head-office can be dude-bro jerks. Luckily they have little day-to-day influence on individual boxes so you'll mostly find a very different attitude (i.e. helpful, encouraging, safety orientated) in the individual boxes than what head office gives
      - The other big problem with Crossfit is losing form doing Olympic lifts for time. Don't worry about your time, take it easy and focus on form.

        Hey man, I appreciate the detailed input, yeah I've been looking into it for quite sometime now, and was wondering what type of strength improvements you can see. You answered my question, and proved my thoughts. It does look like it improves your overall strength and endurance. I also heard that gymnast do a form of crossfit training for their workouts since I'm a former dancer and been to a few gymnastic facilities to train on flips.

          I think it's more like crossfit includes some basic gymnastic strength exercises as a result of its founders gymnastics background.

          I did crossfit for around 8 months and loved it. I got stronger and the fittest I've ever been, including my 8 years in the military. Sure I want running 5.30 minute miles like when I was 18, but as a 162 lb 30 something year old who hadn't run for nearly a decade (due to screwed knees and ankles) 7.30 wasn't bad and I was happy with the progress I was making in lifts (110 lb press, 180 lb + deadlift, 132 lb power clean). Not fantastic, but a big improvement from when I started and that was coming of few months of bodybuilding type training. The metcon wods were where i did best and my conditioning was noticeably better when it came to my martial arts sparring and surfing, which was more important to me at that time than getting a lot stronger. It seemed like I could paddle all day without getting tired.

          I was crossfitting 3 to 4 times per week, martial arts 1 or 2 times let week and surfing for a few hours. At that point I was eating anywhere between 90g to 300g of carbs a day.

          Looking back at it I enjoyed a lot of the training though some of the WODs were a bit dodgy.

          I was training by myself in the gym at work, so none of the pressures of a group session, so I could back off if I want feeling it without any fear of looking bad. After seeing my progress several of the gym instructors got into crossfit and started a crossfit lite wod a few times per week.

          Unfortunately the gym shut down for several months while they changed management and I never got back into it.

          Leaning more to bodyweight calisthenics / gymnastic strength training at the moment, though I'm starting to work some bodyweight metcon style workouts back into my program.

          I think the key to crossfit is to know when to back off and take it easy, you don't have to go balls out every wod. Also I think for most people 3 times per week is plenty, 3 days on 1 of 2 on is would be over training for many.

            Hey thanks for the insightful input, yeah I heard it could get a little insane with the WOD's sometimes. I think I'll take a shot first at one of the WOD's on one of the crossfit training websites. Looks very interesting since I've been watching crossfit games on youtube and those guys look like beasts. Therefore, that's what got me interested in it in the first place, plus a few of my friends were doing it too, so why not.

              Why might be a more relevant question than why not !

                I have a an interest in a Crossfit gym and also train there althouh i personally dont do crossfit.

                Make sure to check out all of the different affiliates in your area and find one that fits your personality and looks to be the most competent. Everyone has their own programming variation so check that out too, some boxs have rediculous programming that is almost all endurance based, try to find one that incorporates strength training into most of the Wods.

                Overall, Crossfit is great for conditioning and you will definitely get stronger. One thing that i find a negative but other like is the intensity factor. Im not a fan of doing everything for time or rounds or both. I also dont like following other peoples programming so for that reason alone i dont Crossfit, although i will do a WOD here and there if it looks like fun. I think the best part of crossfit is the comradery and great coaching (if the coach is competent of course).

                  That article is such a crock of shit, it's hard to know where to even start. His site is designed to sell his training services, plain and simple.

                  Crossfit works well for many people, for a lot of good reasons. Give it a shot for a few months and see if it works for you.

                      Give it a go and see if it suits - I would imagine the gym will do 'taster' packages? Probably a little more expensive than an actual membership but at least you can try before you commit. This will be only way you know if it is for you! x

                        I'm only a week into fundamentals (and the OP from the thread I think you saw below). So far, I like it alot. My box really focuses on form and doing things correctly though. Our coaches really watch and i've witnessed a number of times where they've told someone to "slow down. your form is slipping". The only times I hear them really say to speed up is during runs or something. Anyway, It's 100% what YOU do with it. Be safe, listen to them and pay attention to how you do things and you'll do great! But be prepared to feel like you suck at the beginning! haha
