  • Cardiac Hypertrophy

Having trouble locating any info on how long it takes for healthy hypertrophy from exercise to become undone. Say I ride a bicycle constantly for five years, then take up a less-aerobic lifestyle. How long will it take for a heart to lose its conditioning? I only find info about undoing bad hypertrophy, not undoing good hypertrophy.

Maybe there is only bad hypertrophy and stuff like being generally active doesn't give you hypertrophy of the heart at all because the heart doesn't generally respond with hypertrophy?

No, there is very good hypertrophy. The heart does grow up to 60% bigger, especially the left ventricle. That's why athletes' hearts beat slower.

Yeah, knifegill is correct. Its the double edge sword of the endurance world. I've not seen any particular info on it knifegill, but as you know the heart is a muscle. I would suppose that if you remove the stressor (i.e. excess cardio) it would respond. Like you though I've seen no timeframe, and really there probably isn't any consensus on it.

I was just thinking, since it took 9 years to shrink my legs, has my heart finally returned to normal, too? I know, million-dollar question there. Probably no answer.

have you searched for physiologic hypertrophy, eccentric hypertrophy (from aerobic exercise) and concentric hypertrophy (anaerobic exercise)?
When I'd had enough of the grain and starched based 'diabetic eating for health' diet (eating for health, my ass!) my weight was 242.5 lbs. On starting primal- 18th April 2013 weight : 238.1.
            27th July 2013. weight after 100 days 136.9 weight lost 101.2lb ; that's 105.6lbs since I stopped the 'diabetic eating for health'

Cardiac remodelling: concentric versus eccentric hypertrophy in strength and endurance athletes

Good read there, I think. Kind of makes it sound like weightlifting is pathological, though.
