some? Try none. Oh, you can get women's jeans for a big ass. But big thighs? Oh hell no.

    • Back to the OP's question I think it may be because the guys on the treadmill are just starting to get in shape; by CW standards it seems like the place to start. It doesn't require asking anyone for help, while if they don't know anything about lifting it would require asking someone to show them how to do it.

I'm with you there. I'm 5'11 so I have to buy large tees just to cover my midriff. It's so flattering to have blouses baggy in the boobs because if you're a large apparently you have to be a brick house too.

Sorry but no amount of spin is going to change the fact that guys going around waxed and with make up and nail polish wouldn't look about any less ridiculous than if they went around with full on Bozo the clown make up.

This reminds me of an old conversation that I heard Howard Stern have some time ago. He asked Robin if he should start waxing, getting his nails done etc. because he was seeing some guys doing that. He said that his girlfriend was against the idea. Robin also advised him against it and when he asked her why she said "Because a woman wants to feel like she's with a man, not a young boy or another woman."

I don't consider myself big yet or anything, but I even notice that shirts, for example, often cause my shoulders to haunch forward, and that some pants are NOT made at all to accommodate developed thighs and glutes.
I have the same problem when it come to buying jeans. If I try on a pair with the correct waist size I can mostly forget about trying to get it over my butt. If I try a pair that is large enough in the backside then they are usually 3-4 inches way too big in the waist. Pretty much the only ones that will fit well are the "relaxed" fit jeans. Also since Americans have gotten so fat over the last 30 years they've changed the sizing. What used to be a mens large years ago is about a medium today.

The fact of the matter is, if you put hunter-gatherers in western clothing they would look like what the uninformed on this thread label as whimpy hipsters. Muscle burns more calories so in a survival based environment it is far more advantageous to be lean.
Here are some examples of modern hunter/gatherers:

Skinny with little musculature yet they are built for survival in harsh environments where they have to hunt/gather their food EVERY day. And you better believe I'd take my chances with those 'sissy-looking, skinny whimps' over any of you out in the wilderness any day. If any of you who are so proud of your six-pack abs were to be placed in an actual Paleo environment where you had to hunt/gather every day then you would lean out to look like those 'hipsters' you so despise because that is what is best suited for survival. This proves the point that even in a 'paleo' environment knowledge/intelligence are more necessary for survival than big calorie burning muscles. Lucky for you, you don't live in those environments so you have the luxury to make fun of those guys for not looking as manly as you while they are living the life you humorously think you're built to survive in.
From searching google images for hunter gather (which I'm guessing you also did, as the pics you linked to also showed up) you could've also cherry picked these:

Looks to me like African HGs are/were certainly less muscled in general, while in my experience those in Australasia and the Pacific islands were (and still are in places like Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea) very lean but carrying a little more muscle.

              • I'm not disagreeing that many of us today do think we need a more muscular physique than would naturally develop were we actually living an HG lifestyle, but then unless you are trying to live a reenactment that's probably not relevant.

I also do think that in the past 50 years or so, our perception of ideal proportions of muscularity has been skewed. If we look at the good old "chesticles", for example, bigger is better right? But when we look at even the more well developed tribesman, the pecs often seem underdeveloped from a modern western perspective.

Adding this two pics more because I just found them and thought they were pretty striking.

                  • Our emphasis on pecs is even more recent than that. The old-timey bodybuilders (way back in the 70's and stuff) had much smaller pecs than their modern-day equivalents. That the standing press has fallen out of favor as the best exercise for/demonstration of upper body strength in favor of the bench press is regrettable, and probably a result of the desire for the development of and preference for said "chesticles."

But I don't think anybody's talking about bodybuilders in this thread except as a strawman to claim that anybody who lifts weight is one of those brown-painted man-hugging silky-thong-wearing weirdos.

Let's remember that the tribal people of whom we have photos are the ones left on the fringes of the land where civilization didn't completely encroach. People who lived in more friendly climates and locales for humans may have been more swole than the Maasai and the other examples we have presently available.

                      • Alot of maurie (?) and islander tribesmen are pretty chuncky.

I just want to point out that despite the fact our ancestors were lean and more skinny, doesn't mean it was ideal. I mean, most guys can build a lot of muscle with the right environmental factors. Whos to say stuck in survival mode, trudging through the wild hunting your food all day everyday is 'ideal'
I mean, olhunter gatherers must have thought agriculture was useful! it wasnt forced on them.
But this got Waaay of topic sorry.

I'm sorry, this is a complete and utter lie. An oft repeated one, but patently false. When Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 (to give a recent and familiar example. A better one would be the semitic herder-gatherers whose blood watered the fields of their agriculturalist conquerors, but I digress), for example, the majority of the planet's inhabitable landmass was full of hunter-gatherers. And to paraphrase Jared Diamond, if it weren't for the Guns, Germs, and Steel of their conquerors, it still would be.
