Since many types of neck pain are caused by sudden trauma like muscle strains or sprains that heal quickly, neck pain treatment generally begins with conservative care in the form of pain medications, heat/ice therapy, and even physical therapy and muscle conditioning.

Do NOT use heat on a sore neck at first. It will draw inflammation to the site...you don't want that. Use ice for 15-20 minutes several times a day and take it easy. Also, do some neck exercises. If you can find it, a book called "Treat Your Own Neck" is a good source of exercise instruction. Can probably find the same stuff online. These two things saved me from disk surgery years ago.
