  • Walking barefoot is really jarring, what am I doing wrong?

    Heya, I have graduated to barefooting outside on grass mostly and I find walking this way is really jarring, the bang runs up my spine and I feel it in my teeth. In the house I can move slowly enough that it is not bad but outside it just seems really unpleasant. Also my soles hurt like hel with any texture at all.

    Am I walking wrong? Is there a way to learn to walk correctly barefoot out of doors?

    All I know is that there are a lot of cases where people get headaches when they started barefoot. But this always went away as the foot muscles got stronger

      Your landing heal first instead of on the balls of your feet. Shoes have trained you to strike heal first. Some people call a natural human gait fox walking as explained in the following videos. You have to retrain yourself to walk naturally

      Would I be putting a grain-feed cow on a fad diet if I took it out of the feedlot and put it on pasture eating the grass nature intended?

        yeah around the house, I walk on the ball of my feet but actually getting someplace outside is awkward. I cant run so walking is it am afeared.

          Until you get use to fox walking, it takes a bit of a conscious effort to not strike heal first. Of course walking on rocks with tender feet will train you faster . My wife actually fusses at me sometimes for being "sneak". Even at 200lbs I don't make much noise walking around the house, and she's goosey anyway, so she jumps if I walk up to her and she doesn't hear me coming. I've asked her if she wants me to wear a bell. I like wearing the new barefoot shoes for everyday. These don't have the toes like Vibrams making them more socially acceptable. Barefoot Shoes

            Now see I am a hunter and walking silently all the time is an obsession for me. I drive my kids crazy cause they clomp all the time. I hunt in leather Mocs I make meself in any weather, The fox walk is fine and close to what I do in the wild moving slow but it is moving fast I cant get the hang of.

              Practice, practice, practice. It's a motor pattern that we have but it can be pretty latent when it isn't used for a long time. It took a full year for me to finally consistently strike on the balls of my feet when I walk. Take it slow and keep at it!

                I have a friend who insists she needs shoes for arch support, cuz her arches just kill her. I pointed to her shoes and said "THOSE are the reason you have arch problems." Any videos I can share with her to prove that?

                  A lot of people heel "strike" when walking and forefoot or mid foot strike while running. I think everyone is different and you have to adjust to what is most comfortable for you. You might try shortening your stride. That seems to work when going barefoot or minimal. Watch how children move to get an idea. I've watched how my grandchildren ranging from ages 2 through 8 move and they tend to walk heels down and run front or mid foot first.

                      I walk every morning in the woods with my dogs in softsole mocs and make an effort to use a forefoot / neutral strike. As others have said, it takes some time to "retrain" but slowly it is moving into my running stride as well. I ran track for years and was always either on my toes or heel striking (when distance training) and I really had a lot to unlearn--but my shin splints are now a thing of the past. Check out Chi Running from the Library if they have it and give it a read. I just got it last week and have found it helpful.

                      Better to run slowly in correct form and build up--especially if you are still dropping weight. I've lost about 30 pounds so far and that has really helped with running. Or has running helped with that? Another chicken / egg thing. Good job that both are tasty
