  • LIFTERS- smith machine: love it or hate it

    Hi all,

    Im really getting into weight lifting, have been using the new rules of lifting for women which is awesome! i dont have anyone to train with so ive been using the smith machine at the gym which i find safer when im training on my own- i find i can lift 20kg+ heavier using the smith machine tho, like it feels easier? i know this has something to do with the way the smith balances the weight- question for you guys out there is, does the ease of the smith jeopardize your training?

    Yes, just squat in a power rack and make sure the pins are setup properly. You are talking about squatting right?

      smith machines are no good.
      They don't allow your body to move naturally as it would with just a bar.
      Just use a squat rack. If you search on here, there are lots of threads about them.

        I personally don't like them since the bar moves straight up and down which isn't natural.I used to use one back in school until I started getting some pains in my knees and back,at which point I switched to a rack and everything cleared up.

          They are good if you want an injury. But you are right you can lift heavier because the smith is balancing the weights for you. As was said above - power rack.
          Eating primal is not a diet, it is a way of life.

            i love smith machines. back when i went to a gym, i could use them for all sorts of things. they are great to hang from or lean against while stretching. if you lock the bar up high, they are decent for pull ups. and, the best thing of all...they're great for keeping people away from the squat rack where real working out happens.

              Believe it or not, folks, the smith machine is the ONLY option at many gyms; they don't all have squat racks.

              If it's the only option, it's better than not doing squats at all, but only if you do them properly! The way I see most people squatting on a smith machine, their balance is totally wrong; if the machine suddenly disappeared, they would keel over backwards.

                i know a lot of big commercial gyms like planet fitness started doing away with free weights, but they still have benches. and i would go for some bulgarian squats with dumbells, or heavy goblet squats before going to the smith machine. you're right about doing them properly...and i don't know if you can get proper form on a smith machine.

                    Smith has its place but I have never been a fan to over use it. I used to use it for things like skull crushers if I were working out alone or I would set the pins for a skullcrusher for example, to start the movement in the weakest range of motion.

                      Yeah. the other night I was doing squats with the rack and a dude told me to go use the smith machine in the other room. I had to tell him no three times.

                        that pretty much says it all. but don't forget you can do australian pullups on them too

                          The only think I use SM for is for the off the floor pull-ups, whatever they are called Never tried it for squats. I keep wanting to adopt it for calf rises that are included in insane quantity in the Ultimate Diet 2.0 routines, but am too lazy....

                            I would have agreed with you last year, because I always thought that a proper squat produced a slightly curved forward/backward arc with the barbell. But then I saw an interesting breakdown of the movement (I'm thinking it was at T-Nation?) where they took videos of pros squatting with perfect form from a side view, and they super-imposed a red line over the movement of the bar which showed that it was perfectly straight up and down with no forward/backward shifting of the body at all. It surprised me.

                              one big advantage of the smith for me is that my gym is relatively un populated-- if i'm trying to do a really heavy weight that I'm not sure about, the smith we have is "safer" than loading up the bar in an empty gym because it's got little latches on it to catch the bar if it falls too far during bench press or something. otherwise...i prefer the bench and the oly platform.

                              it's also nice for chin ups when you are too short to reach the chin up bar that some goliath must have mounted ON THE CEILING like 10 feet up. I've never seen anyone use that thing!
