  • upper body exercises with a broken hand (fractured scaphoid)

    Any suggestions on upper body exercises that are possible with a fractured scaphoid? I'm going to see if the local gym has a pec deck with arm pads instead of handles, and possibly some ab straps for no hand pull ups, but other than that I am out of ideas...suggestions?

    I'm signed up for the tough mudder in May and really don't want to stall out my upper body training until then.

    Sorry about your injury, but I'm afraid you are a lot limited, I made a shortlived attempt to train when I had a Bennett's fracture to my thumb, and it ended up not really being worth it, mind you it depends if you're in a full cast or not? As I was!!

    All I done was try to keep below the chest up together and gradually get back into it when the plaster came off, that took a while mind, what with muscle seizure after six weeks!

    You might have some more joy if you're able to incorperate some machine work, but not really a good bone to break though the scaphoid, not that there is a good one mind!

      How about some type of resistance band workouts. If it was not painful, you could tie a loop around the band and loop it over your cast/splint/hand. I am not sure of what modifications you would need. It may work?

        When I hear something like this it always makes me think of the "life expectancy" of Paleolithic hunter gatherers that the naysayers will throw out. Statements like "why would you eat like that? They did not live past 30! It's obviously an unhealthy diet".

        Things like a broken hand would have been catastrophic back then... these day's it's just an inconvenience that screws up Tough Mudder training.

        Anyway... sorry about your hand man.

          PLANK! may help you maintain, great for shoulders and whole core. If you hold it long enough you can release as mush HGH hormone as you would with the big upper body compound movements

            Thanks! I hadn't thought of the plank!


            Sadly it turns out it is not my scaphoid at all...the mri showed I am ulnar positive and that is messing with my wrist. I go see a specialist in the next week to discuss my options (ulnar shortening does not look awesome).
