  • Starting strength program - Anyone want to join me?

I am starting this on Friday.
Anyone want to join me and chat about it here?
I am not new to lifting.
    My current PRs are:
    Bench press - 25 kg
    Squat - 60 kg
    Deadlift - 55 kg

I have not done power cleans yet, so don't know what I can do for that. I am using the assisted chin/pullup machine, and had 51 kg on there, this needs a lot of improvements.

I'm considering it. I've been lifting for 10 years now though, and wonder if it would really improve my strength much. Any experienced lifters out there who saw impressive gains with SS?

According to this http://www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLi...hStandards.htm I'm more or less in the advanced category in everything except the back squat.

^ It's called "Starting" Strength for a reason - intermediate and experienced lifters might need other programs. If you've been lifting for 10 years progressively, I doubt that you could gain much on any program.

BTW: I'd be glad to join, but I don't have the book yet. I have "Strong Enough" though, which is a really nice and fun to read book.

        My current stats:

        Bench: At least 75kg
        Squat: At least 90kg
        Deadlift: At least 100kg

(I didn't do 1RM tests - the numbers are simply guesses based on low rep (3-5) sets)

EDIT: I guess a more useful thing would be to express the numbers as relative to your lean body mass. Mine is about 80kg, so:

Bench: About 95% lean body weight
Squat: About 110% lean body weight
Deadlift: About 120% lean body weight

I guess I would aim at 120% for bench, 150% for squat and 200% for deadlifts - all for reps of course, not for 1RM.

Yea, I looked more into it and it seems like the madcow 5x5 would be a good one for me. Best of luck to all of you!

I am not buying the book at this stage, just using the link I posted.
My challenge for Jan is to not buy anything new, and ive already checked Ebay in Aus, and there are no copies

I did madcow advanced and it is really good. Good mix of ramping sets and 5x5 depending on the day....I think you will love it.
Another good one is compound exercises for punny arms...all the good compound moves and a good change of reps and sets over the 16weeks

Good luck with SS. I did a cycle 6-8 months ago, and it was pretty awesome. Are you going to drink the milk?

I am just following the workout, I haven't seen anything about milk.

I'm in. I'm still reading through everything and need to figure out what weights to start at.
Squats and DL's - I'll be starting at 95lbs, I think. The most I've ever lifted on back squats was 105, but I only did 3 reps.
ETA: scratch that. Just read more. Looks like maybe I should start at 85 on squats.

I have no idea where I'll be starting on the other excercises and I've never done a power clean.
                          This should be interesting...

I bet you'll make some great gains!

Also... I wanna do the madcow. I know the texas method has power cleans which can be substituted with bb rows. So can the opposite be done in madcow? BB rows substituted with power cleans? I would imagine it wouldn't be a problem, but figured I'd ask.
