  • Another 6 km this morning. Trying to walk more often for a while to catch up on my own goal.

Don't think we could do without a car. We live 4 km from the nearest shops in our little town. Nearest butcher is 15 km away. Have to travel over 100 km for major stores or health food places. But love living in the country all the same.

    • I lived without a car for about 8 years. But I lived close to the supermarket, doc, bus stop etc. so it was really easy. Plus I just had to care for myself. I didn't walk much during that time, but I used my bike for almost everything. Only when we had ice and snow I used the bus. I don't like riding my bike now. It's still a thing that brings me quick from A to B, but nothing that I enjoy much...

      • My husband and I share one vehicle ... It works because he only goes to the office one day per week, my commute is under two miles, and we live in a smallish town.

          • Great progress everyone!

I'm up to 290.6 as of this afternoon. Considering I should be up to about 400 km by this time of year to be on target, clearly I've got lots of work to do! I really want to achieve the 1000 km, so will have to be a little more disciplined and stop finding convenient excuses ....

              • I lived car-free until I was 33. I've always lived near city centres.

I work in a village about 7 miles away, and the bus services out there are infrequent and I have to change buses in the city to get a bus to my nearest stop, a few hundred yards away, so this would be a horrible commute in the winter. It's an easy 20 to 25-minute commute by car as I don't have to pass through the city centre and I'm going against the rush-hour traffic. I find the drive relaxing as I pass lots of beautiful trees, and a few fields with grass-grazing cows and sheep.

I really must resurrect my regular lunchtime 2 km walks instead of spending my lunch hour reading this forum, especially if the summery weather finally arrives tomorrow, as forecast, after two months of mostly cold, wet and windy weather.

Yes, so I am playing catch-up too, on 261 km as of 20 May. I think I can just about complete the challenge, as I only joined it in early February and I usually walk a lot more from late spring through to early autumn.

                Good luck everybody!

C'mon peeps, let's get those feet moving (not you, Turnstone and Cantare! ).

Hey Buzz, you still hanging in there? Hope everything is okay.

                        • My goal is to walk at least 4 miles each week (the site I use to track uses miles, sorry metric lovers ) . . .

That amounts to at least 208 miles this year.

I may up this goal though - for instance, this week I am aiming for at least a mile every day.
                          Healthy Bucket List:
                          • Summit all of Colorado's 14-ers
                          • Hike the Appalachian Trail
                          • Do a real pull-up
                          • Run a 5k
                          • Be "Hot For Training Camp"

                          • I decided to do this as well this year, though no woosy kilometers for me! 1000 miles, all the way! Same on the non-incidental walking. I'm only counting the walking I do deliberately. I too have a job that leaves my butt sore at the end of the day. I took a step directly in that as well, and rigged my cubicle with a standing desk.

It is actually easier to hit the 1k mark then it would seem. I'm on track with completing the 1000 miles on November 24th if I stick with 3 miles a day.

You can do it too! WOOT WOOT

                            • 288 as of May 30, woosie (metric spelling?) kilometres all the way here. Yeah, I don't count my incidental walking either, 1000 would be easy if I did though...

                              • 334 as of May 30. I feel like I am really getting up into the middle of the pack at last. Averaging 2.25 km/day. My average is going up though and if I can get to a bit over 3 km/day I can still crack this goal. Oh yeah, don't count incidental walking and am logging via May My Tracks app on iPhone. I do count my kayak ventures are walking, don't know if that is fair, but don't care either. Maybe next year I go for 1000 km kayaking, now that would be a tough one.
