  • A Single Weight-Lifting Exercise?

    Primal is all about lifting heavy objects in unconventional directions, playing around, and doing bodyweight exercises. How does weight-lifting fit into the lifestyle? I'm thinking that The Bear Complex WOD (from crossfit) would probably be the ideal exercise if you must lift weights. - - I can see myself doing this twice each week while enjoying my walks, playing with my dog and lifting random things.

    Does anyone here currently work The Bear into their weekly exercise?

    The problem with exclusively using complexes like this is that you miss out on the strength component.

      That guy in the front of the video looks like he is going to do some serious elbow/wrist damage in the still...ouch!

        The Bear has been around a lot longer than Crossfit! It's a great sequence, and very efficient, but certainly not all inclusive.

          I'm not so sure Primal is "all about" any of those things - Mark has posts on lifting heavy iron, sprinting, etc. - he's very inclusive in terms of exercise. He mainly says that a couple of times per week lifting heavy things and about once a week of some type of sprint is plenty of exercise for anybody. What the particular form of that exercise is, he's pretty open minded about. I saw him give a talk at a crossfit box but I know he's not a crossfitter personally.

            BTW, Al, I saw your recent article on T-Nation. Congrats on getting your name out there! I'm at 10 chinups now, not too far from m-up land.

              what's the question here? if you will do only one weight lifting exercise, i would choose the deadlift.

                  There is no ONE ideal exercise. The ideal way to exercise is to do different exercises...

                          Simply because the squat works more muscles and is far less prone to over-training.

                              Never do heavy weight compound movements that are 'time' dependent like crossfit, this only leads to spinal injuries very fast.

                              When playing with big weights, you want slow, perfect form, or else..
