  • Breaking in VFFs

So now that I'm rockin some VFFs, I just wondered if any of you guys had advice on building up to racing in them? I'm mainly a 5k'er, but want to work toward a marathon. I know I need to ease into using my V's, and I walked 2 easy miles today (1 before dinner, 1 after, half uphill-- good calf stretch!). About how much distance should I add to that each week in my V's? I was thinking a quarter mile in addition to the training I already do. Example: If I am doing 3 miles 4 days a week, make 2 of them in V's and the next week make it 2.25, and so on). I did want to note that I spent the summer building up to 1 mile barefoot prior to buying my V's.
So where do we go from here?

    sprint sessions okay?

How sore are your calves/feet? If you have been going completely barefoot a lot it probably will be a pretty easy transition...

If you're not really sore, you could probably add half a mile or a mile a day until you're where you want to be.

As for the sprinting, totally depends how strong your feet/arches are. Try 2-3 sprints at less than full intensity then see how you feel in the morning. If it feels OK then you're probably good to go full intensity. It's all a matter of feeling your limits out carefully.

Legs are feeling pretty good. Definitely "Oh, those are gears we haven't moved in a while", but not uncomfortable. Going to do some sprints tomorrow at gym & get them out of the way for the week. Don't plan on sprinting for more than 30-60 secs at a time, maybe 3 times over a 30 min period.

          Ewwww, treadmills...

I can't stand treadmills. And trying to do sprints on them is just tempting fate IMO.

I figured the treadmill would be easier to film than the track, and also have a little more give/cushion. Really I only get on the TM to do sprints once a week. The rest is all done on track or outside

Hate to say it, but: Barefoot Running: Runner's World Forums

Best site in the world for getting started barefoot running. Regardless if you just want to adjust to VFFs for walking and sprinting, or have chronic cardio ambitions, that site is awesome for information on how to adjust to minimalist shoes, barefooting ,etc, without the almost inevitable fractures and abuse injuries when people start using their feat like they were meant to be used, but without decades of exercise to strengthen them first. Start with the stickies.

what will happen is, you will sprint too much and slide back into that wall.

but your VFFs seem to be working good, good news.

The typical safe standard seems to be to add 10% to your distance each week. Also, I am not sure it is physically possible to do an all out true sprint on a treadmill.

Thanks and why not? 9-10 mph is pretty f'in fast for a slow poke like me (I average a 14 min mile)

You can certainly run very fast on a treadmill, but I don't think you can truly run as if you are running from a tiger, without abandon, at 100% effort, on a treadmill. There is a difference between running really fast and a max effort sprint.

LOL my self imposed hamster-wheel-free sprint probably tops off at 5 mph, LOL. I think for me treadmill is better. I can only REALLY sprint (like running so fast, only toes touch ground) for about 50y. I'm pretty sure a lion would eat me, even if I tried running.

Very true, a true sprint only lasts about 20 seconds at most.

you'll feel it pretty quickly if you're doing too much with the vff's, feel them out, spend the time you have outside of them wearing sandals, and you should be good to go.

Enjoy them, and how they change your gait.

Yeah feeling yesterday's sprint today in my lower calves & shins. Took it easy today and stayed with walking. I'm pretty much in flip flops 9 months out of the year, so I think transitioning to V's is going to be pretty smooth

V's are definitely a lesson in listening to one's body!
