  • TRX - homemade style

The past few weeks I've heard more and more about TRX, the suspension workout system. I did some research yesterday and found a much cheaper company that is highly recommended as a better design called Vegas Pro Straps. But as I look at what is being used, I see basic cargo straps with carabiners and workout handles. I plan to make my own and save about $150. Has anyone else used TRX or made their own?

TRX has been great for me. Have had them for over a year.

If you want, check out this substitute: http://www.lifelineusa.com/en/products/jungle-gyms (wfs)

As I also have rings, I think a ring system could be subbed for most exercises. Also, if you need a longer strap, you could add carabiners (from REI) as I did to help the TRX to accommodate a larger tree branch.

The only criticism I have for TRX is that the grips are connected and, as a friend also pointed out, it'd be better if they were apart, as in most ring systems.

If you have further questions, feel free to post. Have used them many, many times and could point out other aspects.

Thanks for the reply, Martin. I did find a cargo strap commonly found at most hardware stores. I drilled some hooks above a storage room in the basement for a more permanent use and I also picked up some carabiners for tree usage when the snow clears out of here.

I respect the system TRX put together. I wish I had their exercise guide so I could fashion my own workout, but I've found several videos on their site and on YouTube. Any other guides you'd recommend?

During the summer I'm set to buy a tractor tire, another kettle bell and with my straps I'll set up an outdoor gym to get that Vitamin D!

Here are some sites that may give you some good ideas:

        http://www.maxwellsc.com/articles.cfm

        http://www.wodshop.org/index.html

        http://www.monkeybargym.com/

        http://gymnasticbodies.com/

There is also a bodyweight pdf available from Crossfit. There are actually two versions of it. I saved the pdf file so I don't have the url for that one. Sorry.

Hope the rest of it helped.

P.S. Just discovered this site (MDA) and I like what I see.

I made some out of cam straps (i think 16 footers)(used for tying down canoes on cars) and some 1 inch PVC pipe. I got some 1" webbing from a climbing store (two 18" pieces) and made a loop (loop connected with plastic buckles) with the 5 inch piece of PVC pipe in the loop, and hooked the small webbing loop with the PVC to the looped cam strap. this was hung from the ceiling in my basement. It worked as well as the TRX. The cam straps are adjustable as well.

This worked until i discovered rings! Rings are the ticket. you will eventually want some.

I just made myself a set of straps yesterday. 2 - 8' cargo tie down straps with cam buckles and 3 - 5" pieces of 1" PVC. Totally adjustable. So easy! I made a video and will be posting it one of these days. Total expense - $9.

I have the TRX, still getting used to it. Have used the Jungle Gym at my local gym, not a nice or flexible in the number or ease of exercise. No comparison in my opinion but like the idea of making your own, looking forward to checking the vid out.

You'll never see the light if you're in someone else's shadow, or said another way, life is like a dog sled team, if you're not the lead dog, the scenery never changes

                            Nice job BNDR!

I put hash marks on mine to help line them up when I slide my cambuckles back and forth, but same concept as yours. I also am using handles from some resistance bands that are foam based and work well for a grip. Regardless, we both saved a ton of cash (but I still wouldn't mind having a TRX between you and me).

I hear ya! If I had the money, I'd probably snag a set too. I'm saving my pennies for some P90X action.. someday. It's bad enough I forked over the cash for a pair of FiveFingers, but I can't wait to get them!!!
