  • Wanna pimp slap some folks at the gym

Anyone else get this crap? I've been doing planks at the gym for months. Months. Now, all of a sudden, people are bugging me about it. For the second time this week, some guy focuses all the attention of the whole room on me, encouraging me to do pushups. (I've been having issues with my elbows, so I've been doing hand/feet planks.) I don't know if they think they're encouraging me or what, but really they're just p***ing me off. Leave me alone, and let me work out! Do I bother you when you're working out?

What the hell kind of gym do you go to where people get in your business?

Never seen or experienced that before...

Never seen that before. From other experiences if you do not react in any way they eventually get bored and leave you alone. If you do react, it simply encourages them.

I really want to get a shirt that says "Planking since before planking was cool."

            I like that!

I was thinking of hanging a sign on my back that says, "I'm planking. I did my push-ups earlier. Now go away." I was thinking of changing gyms anyway, they don't tend to repair equipment if they don't feel like it. Maybe this is a sign from on high, repeated because I didn't get it the first time.

tell them you only do push ups from handstand position; the other ones are too easy.

I was out of town for work last week, and stopped onto the local Y to get some kettlebell work in.
After my first circuit, this old fuck comes up to me and says, "you used those things before?"

                  "yes"

"When you do those ones were you bring it up to your shoulder (he meant cleans), if you don't use your hips so much, it will work your biceps more. Want me to show you?"

"no thanks. Rest break is over."

Moral to the story, no one wants unsolicited advice at the gym. This goes double for you washed up wannabe body builders with your elbow wraps, wrist straps, weight belts and zubaz pants.

Brilliant! and if you don't use your hips during swings it works your deltoids more!

Ugh. Unsolicited advice of any kind is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Unfortunately, ignoring them is all you can do.

If your gym is any good, the staff will tell them to shut up or leave.

I just nod and say "thanks" and make them feel like they did something,

                            then resume workout

How about challenging the nosy person to a tabata in whatever move you were doing. Highest overall reps wins; loser buys winner a smoothie. This will either get them to bug off pretty quick, or make you a new friend. It's a win either way.
