  • Deactivate your power steering for a healthier drive.

Good idea? Bad idea? My car has no power steering and it's awesome.

There can be a big difference between a car designed to be manual and a car designed to have power steering with it not working.
The latter can be almost undriveable.

as an engineer with an emphasis in safety, I can say BAD idea! if you were ever in a wreck you could be in a world of hurt legally.

I have a 40-year-old car with no power steering, and it's a nice workout at low speeds. But I would never do this with a modern car- you'll end up killing yourself and someone else, breaking law 8.

My first car was a 64 Rambler with no power-steering. It felt like trying to steer a tank manually. I give partial credit for the good muscle tone in my arms (at age 52) to that car.

Bad idea! Best just buy a pre-power steering car, learn to maintain it and enjoy driving it. Better still, buy one that is turbocharged and you have to hold on as well as trying to steer it! SAAB 99? Pop some 17" wheels on (standard 15") for some real effort!

A car designed for manual steering uses more mechanical advantage, ie you turn the steering wheel farther for the same change in front wheel angle. If you disconnect the power assist, you lose the ability to react quickly in an emergency because the steering is so sluggish. That's not safe. Don't do it.

                  But...but...Grok didn't have power steering!

But seriously, NO. A car with power steering can be steered when the power steering fails so that you can safely guide the car to the side of the road before you call your mechanic to get it fixed. It's not so that you can intentionally disable it to get an arm workout. It's not designed to do that, and intentionally disabling a system like that is stupid and could definitely make you legally liable for any accident that might occur because of it. An old manual steering car is designed for it; your modern car isn't.

Not to mention that a car of that age, with a full tank of gas, pollutes more sitting in your driveway than a new car does going down the highway at 65.
