  • Cardiologist: Marathoners "without risk factors" die of heart attacks

I attended a presentation by a cardiologist in Scottsdale yesterday. He was discussing risk factors, and he said something like this: "Risk factors are not all there is to it. I have patients who have no risk factors -- they are like, vegetarian marathoners, and they just drop dead one day of heart attacks."

Maybe "vegetarian marathoner" should be added to the risk factors?

Endurance athletes can be prone to enlarged hearts, leading to sudden death. Very different to the typical heart attack (myocardial infarction following arthersclerosis) for which the risk factors are determined. Check this story: Catalyst: Exercise overdose - ABC TV Science
