  • Hooping!

I recently discovered that damn near all of my friends hoop. The few occasions which I have attempted to hula-hoop, I have failed, but I admit I gave up on it pretty quickly. Now that I'm Primal, hooping seems like a great way to get in some easy cardio and Play at the same time.

Are there any other hoopers here? What type of hoop do you use (larger/slower, smaller/faster, heavy, light, etc)? And, are there any good Youtube channels with tricks that you'd recommend?

    Thanks in advance! ^_^

Ha! Oh, no. THAT's a game everyone hated having to pick me for in my school days, and I don't blame them one bit.

I'm a wannabe hooper. I have one, but i don't like it's thickness. I'd like to get a noncollapsible one filled with water. I started practicing last summer- no, it was the summer before, because last summer I had a baby, lol. I didn't get very far. But I'll be watching this thread.

If you have a Wii Fit they have it on there - I love it!

I am a champion hula hooper, but only the conventional around-the-waist style. I can't do those fancy moves. I've won contests for time, drunk even! Yeah, I am so proud... I love hooping, seriously. I have one of the weighted ones but it was placed in the back of the garage during our latest move. I just dug it out last week after my first week of Primal. The wavy, weighted ones do hurt at first, bruising as your body adapts to it. But afterwards, it's perfectly fine. I love that it is both a workout AND totally playtime. You can't be not happy when using a hula hoop.

Hooping is my combination of play and exercise. I don't have anything fancy, just a large plastic one that is fluorescent pink. Although I use to hoop a lot as a kid long ago, never even thought about it until the Wii included it in one of their fitness games. That was fun and I wondered if I could do it for real. Took me quite a while to get it right and for a long time I got more exercise from bending over and picking it up off the floor.

I'll have to check out some of those YouTube vids. I never even knew you could do anything but make it go round and round.

The most important tip is to have a properly-sized hoop. The weight of the hoop can vary on personal preference, but if it's too small then keeping the hoop up is much harder. This is the definitive DIY hoop tutorial, though you might also search for local places that teach hooping classes -- they'll likely also have hoops available for purchase.

My gym up here just got a bunch of hoops, so i gave it a try and was cracking myself up...what a riot and so much fun...challenge. I can go for about 30-45 sec at a time. It is part of my normal routine now so hope to get better!
Had no idea it was so organized though.... last time I used one was 45 years ago! (9 years old) a light tube plastic one...lol. These new things are beasts!
