walking in place

  • walking in place

    i turned my desk at work into a stand up work station, and i've tried walking in place (even while typing this) as a possible move slowly exercise. do you think this works for moving slowly? certainly it's better than sitting in a chair.


    ps. walking in place takes way more concentration than just walking forward--at least for me--who knew?

    I saw a stand up desk with a built in treadmill so that you could walk while at work. It was a very slow treadmill, something like .5 miles per hour, but they said that over 8 hours it really adds up. It was on NBC or something, so I don't have a link, but I'm sure Google could find it if anyone were interested.

      Maybe, but it sounds so soulless. Why not fit the walking into some other part of your day? Walk to the store, walk to work, walk partway to work, use buses (inevitably increases your walking).

          i actually do walk whenever i can, though it can get difficult where i live this time of year (difficult might not be correct...unsafe seems better). walking in place at my desk is just something i sort of started by accident this morning.

          ...and...
          @meatme--because i had some music going it really turned into a dance session that i quickly stopped whenever someone even came near my office. guess i found a new way to move slowly on busy days

            That would make me feel like even more of a caged animal inside this awful office. I would literally be a working hamster. The only possible worse thing to that is if my treadmill walking powered my computer or something.
            I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.

                I figure any movement is better than no movement. I am a secretary. As such, I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day. If I could rig it so that I could march in place or do hamstring curls or SOMETHING instead of just sitting, I would totally do it!

                  I keep a kettlebell and bands in my office and have been known to use them. I, too, sit for hours a day and it drives me batty, so anything I can do to move is welcome. I don't think it's soulless - it's not as fun as a walk outside, but at least it's not just sitting.

                    Even just standing is vastly better than sitting. When we sit too long, our production of lipoprotein lipase decreases. Lipoprotein lipase is responsible (in large part) for getting fats out of our blood.

                    Back in July (iirc), I made the shift to a 'standing desk' - ie laptop placed on the kitchen counters at counter height or bar height. Sometimes I do some squats, toe raises, or various stretches while working at my makeshift standing desk.

                      Yes, any movement is better than no movement, but walking in place really doesn't do crap in comparison to actual walking.

                        I am new to Paleo..based on the comments I have read on the forum, I have to say that I am excited to a new me. Yay!

                        One thing I did (finally got it all worked out and in place) is to buy a cheap treadmill (something I wouldn't run on) and an old IKEA workstation... and got it to work. I found the plans online. I have been walking in my office for a day and I have to tell you, it takes a little time to get used to typing, reading and walking at the same time. Hopefully, this experiment is a good one!

                          When I don't feel like driving to the gym I will walk in place in my room and watch TV. In fact I am about to do that right now. I try to switch it up a little and do 40 seconds of walking then 20 seconds of body weight squats.
