  • Hello from Central CA! I'm a 38 year old Momma-of-Many. I have eight lovely children who are (almost) 15 down to 5. I have lost 30 pounds in the last three years, slowly, but through real diet changes and real life exercise. You can see before's and after's here: http://lovingthecrew.blogspot.com/20...n-and-now.html

I looked at Atkins a while ago, but hated the recipes. They focus so on Splenda and fake stuff! I feed my family REAL food! I am glad to have found this site. I've been reading through the site and have learned so much! I have been at the same weight (though losing inches and building muscle) for well over a year. I need to change something, obviously.

I am not at all Primal yet. I am still building my knowledge base and getting ready. I have to admit that, as a large family, beans and rice make up a large portion of many meals! I will be greatly interested in learning how to eat this was as inexpensively as possible. I have to multiply costs by TEN! I imagine I will continue to cook beans, rice, bread and breakfast oats for my family and just not partake. I grind whole wheat to make wholesome bread (even though I eat it much less often anymore). I just can't see growing kids getting full enough on veggies, since I KNOW I couldn't afford enough meat for them to eat it every meal! I have three teens!

We do use dairy. At times we have raw cow or goats milk and use store bought milk in cooking (in small amounts). We have two family members who are lactose intolerant. We do not use a great deal of milk. I do use butter, along with coconut oil, olive oil and lard. We do not use any other fats. I enjoy Greek yogurt on occasion, too. We do not drink any coffee or tea, but do enjoy kombucha. I culture it at home and make 2-3 gallons a week. Water is our main drink.

I love to mountain bike, but do little of it in the last several years. We do go hiking in the mountains several times a month in the spring, summer and fall. I swim in our pool in the summer and play tag and chase with the kids when we go to the park. I walk an hour 5x a week (depending on the weather) and usually get about 9000-10,000 steps in that time. I do exercise DVD's at home three or four times a week. Yoga is my favorite. I have P90 (not X) and use them regularly. I am pretty excited to read about the NO Chronic Cardio thing, though. Cardio is not my favorite. I much prefer yoga and weight training.

My favorite primal food? It would be rib eye steak, but who can afford that often? Most of our meat is chicken and ground beef. I make our ground beef from Shoulder Clod, so I know what's in it. I also use the shoulder meat for stew meat and roasts. We have backyard chickens, so eggs are a favorite. I eat them most mornings.

I can't speak of the best and worst part of being primal, yet. I'm looking forward to learning here and to continued progress on my way to getting healthy!

    • Ciao! My name is Dominic and here is my info:

      The Questions:

Your location: Cleveland, Ohio (Mentor to be specific)

      Age (If you want): 33

How Primal are you: Regarding Nutrition, since the 80/20 is part of the plan, i'm 100%. I eat NO grains except on holidays where it is family tradition to make homemade pasta dishes and even then I usually only eat a "no thank you" portions. I eat some nightshades, a very occasional tuber, NO legumes, occasional red wine dark chocolate and craft beers, NO processed sugar, occasional honey and real maple syrup in primal recipes.

Regarding exersize, I use P90x...not entirely primal but I view things like yoga, kenpo and stretching as "fun" so it works. I snowshoe once or twice a week and get my sprints in playing rugby.

Do you consume dairy: Some...I cook with organic butter (grass fed when i can get it) and eat in very minimal portions specialty cheeses on occasion...80/20!

Do you drink coffee or tea: once in a blue moon...never been a caffeine person

Motivator for switching to Primal: I was doing p90x and was cutting down on carbs. A friend turned me onto MDA and it just clicked. I dove in head first. The main motivation for the entire "act" is my family. I have a 6month old son. Before my son was born, I promised myself that I would set the best example I could and I would NEVER let my son see me fat except in old pictures. I was 265lbs...I'm currently 188 with a target of about 175 @8-9%bf.

Favorite exercise: Plyo pushups and "the everything". The everything is a clean from the floor to a push press to a squat.

      Favorite Primal food:
BACON!! close seconds are braised brisket, porterhouse and the enchiladas from the PB cookbook.

Best part about being Primal: enjoying life, eating the things I like AND the look on my doctors face when they see my drastic appearance and medical changes then I tell them I eat bacon, lard, butter and coconut oil every day in additon to whole eggs and lots of red meat...oh and NOTHING (grains) they consider healthy!

Worst part about being Primal: The constant pressure all around me to give my kid sugar and grains. My wife has friends that are nurses that think we should give our kids rice cereal because "they did" and he needs the "nutrients" from the cereal....(I have managed to keep that crap out of my kids mouth though! Sal prefers avacado and green veggies and we are now starting him on meat!)

      • I'm new here today. I've lost 30 lbs 6 months ago by doing HCG. I had tried everything and had no success. My blood tests showed hypothyroidism, insulin resistance and cholesterol of 320. My weight was 197 and I'm 5'5. Since my inital weight loss, I have been eating mostly PB style with exception of occasional dairy. I have not had any sugar, or grains since May of 2010. . I have had potatoes on occasion but otherwise, I have been avoiding starches. I purchased the PB book and am currently reading it. I have believed in this way of eating for years and am glad to see this website.

        • Hi All! Datto here, well here goes.

Your location: Australia, up north, where the heat, humidity and crocs are!

Age (If you want): 26 years young!

How Primal are you: Currently I cant guage how Primal I am, i have just ordered the book, and am doing ALOT of websurfing to research as much information as possible, but yesterday was shopping day and i discovered that its actually cheaper to buy grass fed beef then grain fed so WOOHOO for that! have stocked the fridge with steak steak steak and more steak, chicken (wings/drummies/thighs), lamb chops, ground beef and bacon! plus a big big box of vegies and a couple dozen eggs, and im into it as of today. I have previously followed atkins and know that my body responds well to low carb/no processed foods, so this is just a continuation of a journey that started along time ago.

Do you consume dairy: Yes, I do consume dairy, butter, cream and cheese will all be included for the first few months, and then once i have the basics under control I will make changes as needed.

Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes i am a coffee and tea drinker, however I have reduced this to once or twice a week, instead of once or twice a day.

Motivator for switching to Primal: my first motivation is to lose weight, for both vanity and health reasons, when I first changed to a low carb way of eating, I was 107kg, and over the course of the last 2.5 years I have reduced that down substantially, at my lowest i was 78kgs and so pleased, however due to some major life changes, including the breakdown of my marriage and moving house a couple of times, and then commencing a new high pressure role with work, my eating habits slipped and carbs and processed foods have crept back in. I currently weigh 86KG, and have a goal of 70kg. The health motivation is because I want to live a long, healthy, active life. I want to have children, and I want to be a great role model for them, and have the energy and enthusiasm for life that my parents had when I grew up. I have a wonderful partner, who is supportive of me, no matter what my endeavour, and so now it is time to take hold of my health, for me, for us, and for our future!

Favorite exercise: I like incidental excercise, I havent worked out my actual planned excercise routine yet, but have been moving house (read: Lifting HEAVY things), I have found I actually enjoy gardening, reaching, chopping, stretching, lugging soil, pushing wheelbarrows, squatting. I love playing volley ball, although due to bursitis in my shoulder that is limited these days. I also pit crew for a speedway team, and spend nights running in the mud, carrying jacks, wheels, various parts, and riding quads, and always have a great after burn sensation.

Favorite Primal food: Nothing beats a good steak. and im about to try grass fed beef! YAY!

Best part about being Primal: Dunno yet!, but probably the fact that you get to eat REAL FOOD, thats yummy, and good for you! and is not crappy boring bland frozen diet meals, or pathetic excuse for a shake-shakes, if i want a shake, its gonna taste GOOD!

Worst part about being Primal: Im irish by heritage, and miss potatoes so much. but they are my cheat, and as long as i treat my body as my temple 85% - 95% of the time, I CAN eat potatoes occassionaly, and I wont beat myself up about it. I have a healthy relationship with food, and it in turn has a healthy relationship and effect on me

Welcome. There is also a Primal Australia subgroup if you want to join. Where did you find grass fed beef cheaper than grain fed?

              • Hi all, Gina in Southern Cal here.

I am 51, in the weeds of menopause - weight gain, hot flashes, sluggish, blah...

I did machine Pilates for a year, play competitive ping pong twice a week and was starting an at-home high-intensity-cross-training for a few months last year until I got hip bursitis, then bunions. I cut everything out except the ping pong and daily doggy walks.

My bursitis is healed and now I want to start HIT up again, and eat a better diet to counteract this menopause/aging stuff - I am not going down without a fight!

Anyway, stumbled upon Mark's site and realize that even though I thought my diet was pretty good, I am still eating way too much carbs from grains, sugar and starch. Inflammation is the big scary thing that has already affected me with the bursitis and bunions. Many years ago I had a life-threatening deep vein blood clot, which I now believe was caused by the birth control pill and an inflammatory response in my body.

PB sounds like everything I want to do, so I am jumping in and taking my husband with me.

I eat a lot of dairy - milk, ice cream, yogurt, cream, butter. I had already come to the conclusion that I need to cut back on this without giving it up entirely.

I drink black tea almost incessantly - it is my one addiction.

So my plans for the year are to start up the daily Pilates and high-intensity short workouts each day, continue with ping pong, and eat Primal.

I don't intend to go down the middle aged path of popping handfuls of prescription meds and being fatalistic, like some of my peers - screw that!

                Nice to meet you!

My Current Condition: BodyWeight 160, Body Fat 8 to 10% with a 5'8'' Height
Rephrasing the famous Socrates quote: "All I know is that I know nothing" and about that fact, I am still not so sure.
